I know you did this series awhile ago…. But another cool thing for new crocheters to see would be what each of those yarns look like when they are used. Having crocheted for over 25 years- I’ve worked with most of them…. But even I am surprised sometimes at how a particular yarn works up! It would be great if you could have some swatches to show what they look like! ❤
Excellent video! I taught myself to crochet with a book, a hook and a variegate yarn back in the 70s. Made an afghan using chain stitch and single crochet. Good grief! Only thing that saved my sanity was the variegation. The selections of yarns back then was limited so your information for new crocheters is very important. Nothing more frustrating for them than to buy a beautiful yarn and then run into frustration finding their stitches. Thank you!
I wish this video was around when I first started. I bought many yarns that were pretty but not friendly to work with for beginners. I also fully agree with your suggested yarn type for those who are just starting out. Great tutorial 🤗
Thank you. I'm old enough to remember when there was one yarn. Now there's "fingering" yarn, DK weight....like I know what that means. Well now I do!😁👍
Thank you so much Tiffany for taking the time to do this. I think it will be very useful for a lot of beginners and even for some of us that have been crocheting for years but have not tried some of the different types of yarn. You are awesome! 😘
This is excellent for beginner it would have been handy had I been there but I had my grandmother instead so I can't complain have a beautiful weekend and a wonderful week. Kay Domalik
In India we only get one type of yarn and I am seriously so fed up. To get a perfect size of yarn we need to go online and that too they are very pricey as per an Indian. 2000 RS for a t shirt yarn also this is the same for hooks too though the good thing about them is they are not pricey. One thing my all Indian crochet lover frnds could do is that they can recycle their t shirt by converting them into yarn
Thank you so much for this! I was looking for a good yarn that wouldn’t be too difficult but wasn’t going to end up being very holy. I went for a velvety yarn and was scared I had chosen something out of my league 😅. This will be very helpful for the future. OH GOD, I got three little balls from the one that looks like 4 different strands. I didn’t know and it was so frustrating 😭, I did finish two projects with it but now I only use it for very small things (doll/pet clothes).
I usually buy hanks, and then make cakes by hand -- swift and (ball-winder or nostepinne, depending upon the kind of yarn). My angora is usually in a loose doughnut.
Hmm, Great question. I would stick with a yarn that is a size 3 or size 4 weight. Non-Textured so your stitches are easier to see. And then really anything that feels good in your hands. OH! And try not to get a color that is dark or super bright white. These colors can create a challenge to see your stitches as well. There are a crazy amount of yarns you could try. Working within these parameters should put you in a successful spot. 🤗❤️🧶
I'm a beginner & the only yarn I had to work with was a, according to Amazon, a 3DK yarn. It gets fuzzy & the strands separate very easily so I keep having to undo a stitch cause my hook only grabbed some of the strands or extra strands from a loop I was just trying to pull through. A little frustrating. I just got some little skeins of Sugar 'n Cream, I think it's called? Label says it's a medium 4. Hopefully it'll work out better for me to learn on. Thanks for this!
Hi Amy! I’m so glad you are trying a different yarn after being frustrated with the last. Just a heads up 100% cotton yarn has a lot of friction to it and may not be the smoothest to work with but will make some incredible washcloths which is a beginner friendly project. I would recommend you try a size 4 weight yarn that is 100% acrylic for a good feel when just starting out. Maybe take a peak at some the next time you go shopping for yarn. 😊
That is a fantastic question! Honestly, it all depends on the thickness of the yarn you are using, the dimensions you want for your scarf AND what crochet stitch. 350m’s of yarn in a size Lacy weight will not get you very far at all and 350m’s of a size 6 yarn would be pretty big. 🤷🏼♀️
You said the size 5 yarn was also known as a roving yarn. That is incorrect, roving is a type of yarn not a size. Roving yarn can come in any size. I'm watching your video and I see a size 7 roving yarn on your shelf. Maybe you can correct this in a later video about yarn styles, roving, chain spun, plyed etc. ✌💜
What is the most consistent terminology for describing yarn especially buying yarn online? I've seen 2-3 videos on yarn reviews where the maker feels like the manuf. label using numbers is incorrect based on how it actually works up.
Hi Elisha. That is a great question. I've never really thought of that before. I believe the most common form of yarn identification on a yarn label world wide would be the ounces of yarn. That can be tricky depending on the actual size of the yarn. Even here in the US I have run into issues with different yarns brands claiming to be the same size but because some yarn can be considered light or heavy they are definitely not the same. I think that has a lot to do with machines, or if the yarn is handmade, and the gauge range a yarn can be to fit in a size slot. I have recently started referring to yarn Wraps Per Inch or (WPI) to keep myself consistent in projects. Of course not all yarn will have that info on the label and you will have to figure that number out for yourself. But it is SUPER EASY!! I made a short video showing how to figure out a yarns Wrap Per Inch and how to take the information and apply it to a project. I hope this will help you in your future projects and clear up some questions you are having. For that video, CLICK HERE: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kx0vl3qHYw8.html
A lot of people would say the best fiber for a sweater would be wool or alpaca but I think there are some acrylics that would work great as well. There are so many different textures now it really all come down to what you would feel comfortable wearing. 😊❤️🧶
Great Questions! I will add those to the YARN series I do PLUS I will go ahead and add those questions to my next Tuesday LIVE Q&A and answer them there. That would be Tuesday April 19th. 😊
help, im planning for a bucket hat, and maybe a cardigan once I practice enough, but I don't know what type of ply i should use for a bucket hat and cardigan
That is a good question. For a bucket hat or a Cardigan you will want to use thicker yarn. I would recommend a size 3 weight yarn or 8ply, a size 4 weight yarn or 10 ply, or a size 5 weight yarn or 12 ply. I hope this helps. If you need help figure out different size yarn go to Pinterest.com and search Yarn Size Chart. It will help you to convert so you don't accidentally purchase something too small. 😊💖🧶
I think Aran yarns need further exploration. In my experience an Aran yarn is too big to be a solid 4 weight, but still too thin to be a full on 5 bulky weight. I have about 4 of this type of yarn from many manufacturers, and it defines is a real thing. Aran weight yarns make beautiful wearable items. 🥰
I have a great video for you to watch AND it's super short. It's my WPI video which will help explain that whole size 4 weight yarn being thicker or thinner than other size 4 weight yarns. I hope you like it. CLICK HERE: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kx0vl3qHYw8.htmlsi=sDt1IMAzbozi9Tgv
I have question regarding yarn pilling ( fuzzies) I crocheted a beautiful throw using a yarn 80% wool/20% acrylic in the camel stitch. However, it pills ( gets fuzzy) so badly which I am not sure, what makes yarn pill so I can avoid this problem next time. Any info would be appreciated.
Hi there! That is a great question. Here is a great website I found that might help with this: www.allfreeknitting.com/Knitting-Tutorials/How-to-Stop-Yarn-Pilling. 😊❤️🧶
Okay I'm not sure what yarn I want I mean I want might want bulky I don't know because I want to make a plushie you know like the ones on Etsy that kind of yarn If you know that yarn can you please tell me?
Oh goodness. I'm not 100% sure exactly where you could get your hands on these yarns. I would suggest searching on the Internet for places to buy yarn near you and also Online places to buy yarn that ship to Nigeria. I hope you are able to find some options. ❤️🧶😊
