The Cromford Canal Towpath Walk - Cromford to Ambergate.
Join me as i take a gentle walk from Cromford Wharf, meandering along the Cromfords Towpath.
As well as stunning scenary, we stop off at High Peak Junction where the Cromford & High Peak Railway meets the Canal. Gregory Tunnel, 76 yards long and also a short hidden culvert under the railway before finally arriving at Ambergate. Plenty of drone footage as well as a relaxing soundtrack.

Gread vid. I am a Nottingham lad who now lives in Crich, I am not too good on the pins now, but I have been known to take the electric bike down the towpath, it is truly beautiful, and just like stepping back in time.

I came back via this route by accident in 2022 after doing the Tissington Trail & High Peak Trails. You wouldn't know it was there and it's so quiet. I got back onto the A6 just before Whatstandwell. I can say it is possible to do all three routes on a racing cycle!

Don't often comment, Ant; as all your videos are so good. However ,the scenery and the way you film back and forth makes this one extra good in our opinion. You always film exactly where we want you to go:). When we visit the UIK in Spring next year we have earmarked this walk. Thanks again for the scenery and the music. (We don't mind at all when your head appears, as you always ensure the views take centre stage:). Thank you so much.

We both loved that Ant...and its weird because patrick leach who i was chatting to you about covered this area in last video even walking thru that tunnel ...both you and patrick have inspired myself and lee to come spend a few days next yr hopefully around this area and do some walks so thanks very much ...keep up the great work and stay safe ...Frank & Lee...

Another fab video - those colours! Disappointed you missed out the cottage that's being restored (Nightingale Cottage?) but still thoroughly enjoyed this virtual walk whilst sat on my fat bum!🤣

The building at 12:00 looks like stables for the work horses. Some places had rested horses so the boat could keep going and reunite with the original horse on the return trip.

Great vid , you should do a part two and follow Cromford canal all the way to the Langley Mill basin . 👍

Your video was brilliant I live a quarter mile from the Cromford canal in Ambergate , I have walked that towpath many times when I was filter. The Cromford receiving sheds are very interesting and the little black tank engine in your picture i can remember running in the early 60s. My grandad worked at the Middleton quarry and there was a connection to the main line from Middleton, the limestone was brought down to Cromford and the stone transferred to the main line. With my grandad working at the quarry I had the privilege many times to walk the line and be passed by that little engine; which by the way came originally from shunting in the docks at London.

At about 11:15 mins you went for a walk up part of the "Sheep Pasture" incline on the Cromford and High Peak line. Just a little higher up from the Derby Road tunnel is the "catch pit" into which any runaway trucks would be diverted. The incline up and down track beds separate around left and right of the catch pit and any run away trucks were diverted by catch points above the pit controlled by a man holding a lever who listened out for warning Gongs triggered by the wagons going both up and down attached to the rope drive, If the gongs were too fast he would let go of the lever and the points were spring loaded to open and thus crash the truck safely. This was built after an accident where a truck ran away and had enough momentum to leave the tracks at the bend near the workshop area and jump the canal ending up blocking the mainline railway! (Info from the "railway papers" publication on the high peak line.)

Hi. ??.Q.....not sure what your name is........but I really enjoy your videos, the drone shots are amazing. I did this walk about a month ago, the opposite way round, it was nice, although not as colourful as your good timing. The only downside, was the road traffic noise from the A6 especially at the Ambergate end.....otherwise very pretty route with a lot of history. Just retired after 46 years playing Trains in signal boxes....and getting paid would you believe. Not a bad life.....it was a hobby really.....still have an interest in railways and canals. Keep up the good work....much appreciated.

Great video and walk Ant. Only of my favourite and frequent walks I've been doing for 40 years, and spent many a day on Cromford Meadows with me old dad. You might like to know that the Pumphouse is in perfect working order and they have open days a couple of times a year when you can go inside and see it in operation, pumping water from the Derwent into the canal. Remarkable piece of engineering. You can also easily walk from Gregory tunnel up to Crich Tramway museum which maybe of interest to you

Enjoyed the video, thank you. This is a lovely part of the country and the walk is part of the Derwent Valley Heritage Way which I can recommend. It follows the valley from Ladybower, where the Derwent is dammed to 10 miles south of Derby where it joins the Trent at the end of a canal towpath. In normal times it is possible to use public transport to join it up.

Wow Ant that was totally super fantastic. Lovely to see the canal I so enjoy that and you also managed a train, you hit it all. Love the stonework on those bridges but that Gregory tunnel was just smashing. The countryside is gorgeous all the Autumn colours. Hope your lockdown doesn’t last long. We have talks that maybe state will be opening their borders. Thanks so much for taking me along, stay safe and p,ease take care

Hi Linda I hope you are okay 🙂 I waited all year to do this one. I did it last November and unknowingly the memory card I used messed up part way around so I didn't get it all. So rather than do it anytime of the year I waited for autumn again for the colours 🙂
