Lovely lunch and a couple of beers with the Cooper Close Lads.... Malcolm, Chris and the two Daves.
Excellent food and very friendly staff 😎
The Crooked House is a pub and restaurant in South Staffordshire, England.
Its name and distinctive appearance are the result of 19th-century mining subsidence. One side of the building is now approximately 4 feet (1.2 m) lower than the other.
It stands in an isolated location close to Himley just off the B4176 road between Dudley and Telford, approximately 3 mi (4.8 km) from the nearest town centres of Sedgley and Dudley. The entrance to the road leading to it lies within the metropolitan county of the West Midlands, but the Crooked House is located just north of the boundary between Staffordshire and the West Midlands.
History
The Crooked House was built in 1765 and was originally a farmhouse. During the early 19th century, mining in the area caused one side of the building to begin gradually sinking. It later (c. 1830) became a public house called the Siden House, siden meaning "crooked" in the local Black Country dialect. The building was later[when?] renamed the Glynne Arms after the local landowner, Sir Stephen Glynne, on whose land it stood.
The building was condemned as unsafe in the 1940s and was scheduled for demolition. Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries purchased the pub and rescued it by making the structure safe using buttresses and girders to retain its lopsided appearance.
Optical illusions
The building's leaning walls give rise to optical illusions, as with a gravity hill. These include glasses slowly sliding across "level" tables and a marble appearing to roll uphill.

Similar thing happened up the Delph with the Dock and iron pub. That was a listed building that fell down all by its self 👎. Then they built bungalows on the land it was on. I think the council are involved. Brown envelopes passed around under the table etc……..

It's not just about insurance. Someone doesn't want to preserve the pub perhaps. At the same site, a building with 5 to 6 apartments can sell a lot of money.

One wonders if the fire was a way of getting rid of a listed building for possible redevelopment and also recoup money through insurance. Had a few happy times there in the 80's/90's.

Name the developer. I suspect it wasn't a reputable outfit (understatement). Ask all the most obvious questions. Why was a partially fire damaged building demolished SO QUICKLY after the fire? Was it an attempt to eliminate all evidence of arson BEFORE the police or fire service could officially declare the site as a crime scene or serious incident scene? What's the potential value of the whole site once it's been filled with "luxury/executive" homes? In many parts of Europe, planning permission is withheld for anything up to 20 years if circumstances fall outside of *EXTREMELY STRICT* criteria. Not sure why such policies are not universal because these types of exploitative scams have been going on for decades.

It’s unstable land, hence the pub been wonky to begin with. No investor will finance housing on the land and No mortgage provider will touch it, as you won’t be able to get buildings insurance which tends to be required to complete a mortgage. They can certainly still build regardless, but I’d expect them to sit empty.
@MichaelSmith-vj6im
@MichaelSmith-vj6im 11 месяцев назад
The building is grade 2 listed. This property won't have foundations hence the subsidence, this has no bearing on the land. This land will be developed just like a number of grade 2 and 1 listed properties in Birmingham which also suffered the same fate, sad but true...
@BobcatPoop

@@MichaelSmith-vj6im I've heard conflicting reports that it isn't actually listed. The media are reporting that it is, however, there's a Crooked House in a different town that is Grade II, so I wonder if these are getting confused.
