Lovely Donald Sinden great actor with a fabulous sense of humour. Cruel Sea one of my favourite films with the superb Jack Hawkins as well, 2 legends. Thank you 👍 x

What a remarkable man. No need to be coaxed out with questions. A natural raconteur. And what an extraordinary film. It ranks amongst the very highest tributes to the courage and sacrifice of people at war.

What a fantastic interview, I just updated my old VHS copy of the movie to a new DVD and this interview was on it. Great storytelling and a fantastic insight into how well made those movies of the time were.

The Cruel Sea is one of the best war films in my opinion. My old man (born 1933) went to see it at the cinema and said the scene where "there are some chaps in the water" was very controversial when it came out. As an aside, I worked with Nicholas Monsarratt's ex steward a couple of times when I was probably the youngest Corp of Commissionares.... commissionaire.

About 2/3 through The Cruel Sea (novel) and looking forward to watching the film. What a delightful interview with Mr. Sinden. This will make the film even more enjoyable. But that’s not the right word, is it? The novel is poignant, heartbreaking and all to realistic. Clearly some of the scenes captured exactly what Monserrat experienced in his time on convoy escorts.

One of my favourite war films. Great story by a charming actor. Strange that he should mention Stanlely Baker in the scene of the sinking of the Compass Rose, because Baker only appears in the first part of the film, well before the Compass Rose went into action.

He obviously enjoys telling a good story and embellishes or is confused about some details since it was about seventy years ago now.

My dad was a regular in the Navy and amongst others served on the Malta convoys. The Cruel Sea still brings tears to my eyes because it shows graphically what my dad and all the others in both the RN and MN went through. God bless them all.

There's almost a touch of Frankie Howerd in Donald's presentation here. But that's no bad thing - both heroes of mine. The slight forgetfulness of old age. He can hardly be blamed, it all took place a long time ago. But truly a classic film with accurate portrayals of what it must have been like.

BBC2 just player this today and it’s a fantastic movie. I’d read the book (which I recommend as it’s absolutely gripping l) but hadn’t seen the film. Didn’t realise it was Donald Sinden as they all look so young. Denholm Elliot is also in it looking very young and dapper.

The Flowers had only one engine when built, so it's no surprise the one used in filming had only one engine... It did have two boilers- perhaps Sir Donald means one of those wasn't working.
