Follow up interview with Tommy! • Revealing Deal Or No D... Tommy's about to run that banker over in his new fuel efficient 2008 smart car. MAIN CHANNEL / @scottcramer INSTAGRAM / scottcramerslife TWITTER / scottstol
@@Relp7357 of course they were doing that because they paint their Banker as a villain who has no issues about disrespecting others since we've seen him destroying the property that a couple contestants have brought with them.
That’s an interesting perspective because it definitely was not a challenge or struggle for Tommy to get in there. So if it was a “joke” the punchline certainly wasn’t there
Yeah, that car company paid a bunch of money to have their car featured. I'm sure that's the marketing angle NBC sold them with: People might think your car is too small to be comfortable, so we'll get a really big guy and have him get in the car to show how much space there is. There is zero chance that Tommy couldn't fit, because that would ruin the marketing message that the car company is paying for. I'm sure they tested it by having an even-bigger guy get in the car. Still, even though there was no chance of Tommy failing, it was a mean thing to do, to put him in that situation. If they were going to do this stunt, they should have had some massive bodybuilder or something, who isn't going to feel uncomfortable about the focus being on how big they are
That did come off as mean with the car, but at the time there was a lot of press about how roomy the smart car can be. I believe there were stories about how many people they could get in it. I would almost bet they had this set up with Tommy beforehand, to show this huge guy can even fit in the smart car and the car company was using it as marketing. I would hope they weren't just being mean to him 😁👍
@@ProtoGhostal1701 Yeah, I agree, but I do think it was with his knowledge. Like a fat actor doing a scene where they get bullied for being fat. It's fake... but also kind of real too lol
agreed. even if there weren't negative INTENTIONS behind it, it was defiantly dehumanizing, they were basically like "LOOK our small car is so roomy and spacious EVEN THIS FAT GUY CAN FIT !"
For real. And whatever on the miss on a million dude came out with hundreds of thousands of dollars even after taxes. Hope they lost money on the episode and dude is living his best life.
@@goodbyesafavor oh wow that's so cool you were there the day they filmed this and even got to ask every single staff and audience member if they were offended by it and found out because it was the aughts no one cared if a fat person was made fun of the way we do today cuz empathy was just a funny word? You're so cool man that's badass.
they knew he'd fit. I dont think Smart would have wanted to make their car look like some people can't fit in it. It was all a publicity stunt to make their cars look roomy.
It must be acknowledged that Scott is one of the only youtube commentators who can discuss the plight of someone very unlike himself while exuding such an all encompassing empathy that never feels like disingenuous "white knighting" or in any way nefarious, just humanizing. And not for nothing, I say this as a black guy with an existence starkly opposite to Scott lol Tommy really was The People's Champ, phenomenal take, youda Man Scott ✊🏿😎
Black, white, skinny, fat, none of that matters. We all deserve the same amount of respect, bullying like this is just sad. Glad he came out with so much.
Oh my god, this guy was a family friend of mine and we all went to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch it on tv with him. I was a kid and thought the car thing was funny but looking back this poor guy
@@khit007 No, we don't need a video, I'll trust the original commentor if they still have contact with him and they respond with an update. Not everyone wants to be on camera all the time. He had his moment in the spotlight, let's let him live in peace, especially as those who have zero knowledge of who he is will stumble on said video and be just as brutally cruel as these hosts were (except there's no possibility of it being scripted). I do hope they still have contact with him and can ask, and if so, it doesn't need to be a recorded statement.
I actually subscribe to Scott and popped on and seen my face was a recommended video.. I am just a normal dude so I don’t have “connections” so I am trying to reach out to Scott to see if he would like to interview me. I don’t have to be on camera. Like it’s been said I have had my moment I dont clout chase But I respect his work would love to update him and give him a full story a behind the scenes so we can share with the community if he chooses so I am unaware of beautiful channel so I would love to know who this is
Part of me wonders if this was intended to be mean, or if this was partially planned before hand with Tommy to kind of showcase how even small smart cars have enough space for large people. My best friends is about Tommy’s size, and a lot of cars are not comfortable. If they had planned this with Tommy saying “hey, we’re going up your size a little bit, act like we don’t think you can do this, and then you walk away with a free car you actually can use “I think that’s a major win for him
@@BVBMonroeInsanity1 if it was preplanned without him, then absolutely I 100% agree. But if he’s in on the joke, if he knows it’s gonna happen before hand and agreed to do this, agreed to put up with a little bit of temporary humiliation only to prove them wrong and spit in their face” when he successfully fits, suddenly it’s not mean spirited. Suddenly it becomes intentional defiance of those stereotypes and negative expectations
@@ODISeth the Banker is supposed to be mean, that's the whole thing with him and how they write him, he is rarely nice and is pretty much always mean since he's seen as their villain.
I went in thinking "What would make this cruel" and honestly I did not expect that. I did NOT think they would make fun of him because of his weight. I didn't even realize it was leading up to that because it did not even register in my mind that they would make fun of something like that.
I knew it was going to be something related to his weight. You don't see people that size on TV and not have a few jokes about their weight, especially in that era. I just wasn't sure in what way they were going to bring it up.
@naotohex I feel ya, I wasn't aware of race and weight until my dad made jokes about both subjects. When I'm not around unhinged older people.. I just revert back to my child mind and don't notice race or weight until it's pointed out at me lol
Its so weird that in the USA version of Deal or No Deal all the cases are held by models. Feels so 80s. In the UK version the boxes are held by other contestants.
America is very big on sexualisation and objectification of women lol, I mean don't get me wrong it happens very much in other countries too but even more so in American shows.
I believe in the syndicated version, they had other ones holding them. It's been a long time though since I watched it. I just remember they only had 2 models from the usual hour long show.
The British one is so wholesome. The contestants all act like best friends. You see 19-year-old uni students befriending OAPs. Almost everything is different; boxes not cases, contestants not models, a small/modest set, the host has hair etc..
Omg mortified. As a big guy this is totally not ok. I would have totally called them out on this and would have never even attempted it. It was like a cruel high school prank on the poor fat kid. I wouldn’t have given them the joy of calling me out being that big. So not ok.
@@goodbyesafavorI don’t think someone’s looks or physical attributes should be part of “taking the heat on game shows”. Mocking his weight is just unnecessary man.
Was coming here to say that. In 2008 everyone was saying "I can't fit in that". They did turn out to be awful cars though lol. How many are on the road today?
It was a publicity stunt. Everyone thought those smart cars were too small, so they got a massive got on a hugely popular game show to get in one. It shows the viewer that if he fits in it just fine, a normal sized person will fit in it fine.
The car gimmick may have been more product placement, in order to show that big people can fit in those cars as well and encouraging others to to buy that specific car. I think Shaq was in a small car commercial like that as well. It was a gimmicky product placement, I guarantee it, and that's why it was "free"
My local Pizza Hut used to give their delivery drivers the two seater Smart car to do their drops, it was surprisingly spacious and great for quick deliveries because you could park it pretty much anywhere.
I agree... in fact I'm willing to bet Tommy knew ahead of time this was going to be asked of him so they could promote the car - and they were most likely a sponsor for the show.
I think there is zero chance they did this bit without knowing for sure he would fit in, which would certainly suggest he knew in advance. As a person, I would hope it would be because they wouldn't be that cruel (it's still cruel even if he knew in advance) but obviously that is not usually a factor in reality TV decisions but the real reason is money. The car company would have been involved in this (likely paying the show) and would never sign off on this if he wasn't going to fit and then have the car look bad both because it couldn't fit him (playing into the "it's too small" mindset) and also because it would be associated with a negative TV moment. It's possible he didn't know in advance but even then, the show/car company would have only done it knowing the dimensions needed to fit and that he would be within it.
If I were the size of Tommy and the condition was only to fit in the car and shut the door, I would have straddled the center console if I had to. Then I’d take the cash value of the car when claiming my prizes. Tommy is a winner and I’m glad to see it!
WOOOOW. I don’t know what I expected but I didn’t expect them to make such a cruel attempt at embarrassing him. Love to see Tommy won though! He a real one
The only people I know who have owned Smart cars have both been over 6' and on the bigger side. And both said they are some of the most comfortable cars for their size they've driven.
Scott, I just have to tell you that you have become one of my absolute favorite RU-vidrs. I love your content, the editing is always excellent and funny, your personality is very relatable & your videos have often made me thankful for life and want to appreciate it more. I have no idea why I am saying this now, but I'm thankful for your content! Merch?
No fucking way. My jaw dropped the moment he said that because I knew. No way would I have been laughing. Tv literally would have seen my jaw drop then an angry face 💀
People are too soft lol. This is a game show. This dude knew all of the model names prior to getting there. This is weird !!!!! Weird !!! Weird comment.
It might have been a setup from the very beginning. He might have known they were going to give him that car, so he was okay getting in it. He had no hesitation, and he was not really that surprised.
Thank you for talking about this! I remember watching it when it was New on tv. I was always uncomfortable about that episode. I’m not a small man and not very much not as large as Tommy, but WTF? I’ve been a model, and my image has been on products, catalogs, and even had my owne action figure made and sold retail in 2002.
Does anyone else remember the episode when a guy was doing really well, but then, because he was afraid of the dark, they turned off the lights? And at the end after they turned the lights back on, he walked out with only $10 in his case? I’ve been trying to find this episode. Does anyone know what ep this one was??
Yes I do remember that since they've aired it on Pluto TV before, I'm gonna try my best to track it down since the fact they have it limits what it could be since I remember it was part of the original run so I want to say it was either Season 2 or 3 but I'll post a reply once I find out.
@@TheLMSN strange my response didn't show up for some reason but it was a contestant named Brooks, the only contestant who has played the game twice and both times were embarrassing. There's an official channel called Deal or No Deal Universe and it was part of Season 2, it's not the 2nd episode he was on but the 1st so it should be easier to tell right away if you see him picking Jenelle's case since she was the Case 17 model.
@@TheLMSN no problem, always ready and willing to help out a fellow fan of the show plus it helps that I'm a nerd for the show as well since my memory for the show is pretty unbelievable.
Genuinely cried tears of joy when Tommy got into that car with ease, so glad that’s how that turned out but still feel so terrible for the embarrassment he must have felt!
@@xvgm24 oh yeah I can totally see that being the case! still cruel to use him as an example on a random game show in front of his crush but at least it’s an explanation
@@coletrainhetrickI think it's likely he was let known before hand anyways. I feel like they even might've had him step in the car before the show, adjust the seats to ensure it was an easy fit. And as someone who has been heavyset at one point in my life, I wouldn't have felt that bad tbh. As a fat person, I knew I was fat, and I always knew that people would be thinking that about me without external forces like watching how bad I was at sports, or how squished it was on the bus. If people were going to form opinions about me being fat, they were doing it from the get go. At the same time, that means if I got picked for anything, I also could confidently say, it's not about my looks or skill, it was about me. Honestly, there was a certain solace in that, compared to now being in better shape, I get a more mixed bag of interactions with a lot of them being a lot less genuine.
I got to test drive a smart car when it was shown off at the autoshow back when it first came out. The cab of the car is actually very roomy and the seats sit higher up from the floor like you're in a truck.
overweight people are often either the nicest person because they know how cruel people can be, or extremely cruel because its all the interactions they've had with "normal" people. Its depressing but reminder that some of the most popular sub reddits for a time were literally dedicated to hating overweight people. Hopefully at some point people become a little less socially disgusting but yea, leads to nonsense like that with the car.
