** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
We need to start with an apology to constructor Jeff Wajes, who created the extraordinary puzzle Simon attempts in this evening's video. It's called Odd Pentominoes On The Loose and it takes Simon a VERY long time. Having finished recording the video, we received a (CRUEL) email from our tester apologising for missing a CLUE in the version Simon was sent. (Simon should have been given an additional X between r4c4 and r5c4.)
We think the video is still worth showing because the puzzle is that good and (we think) a lot of Jeff's intended logic survives the missing X.
If you decide to attempt the puzzle, our strong recommendation is that you try the puzzle with the correct clues (using the first link below) but, if you really want an even harder challenge, then the second link is to the version Simon tries in the video.
Link 1 (the correct puzzle):
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Link 2 (the version attempted by Simon in the video):
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. A pentomino is a set of 5 orthogonally connected cells. There are exactly 12 different possible pentomino shapes (treating reflections/rotations as equivalent). Arrange all 12 pentominoes in the grid so that 9 of them contain only odd digits. Digits CAN repeat inside a pentomino. Pairs of cells connected by an X or V sum to 10 or 5 respectively AND belong to two separate pentominoes. Not every X and V is given. Along the thermometer, digits increase from the bulb end.

Can we take a moment to appreciate how lucky we are to even see this? The tester missed a specific clue that not only didn't render the whole puzzle impossible to solve, I think it had made it more interesting (if only because it is more challenging). If you think about it, there would have been a massive chance of a puzzle completely crashing once any of the clues would be removed,, but that did not happen today. What a lucky coincidence.
@minamagdy4126
@minamagdy4126 Год назад
I can only imagine what carnage a puzzle like this would've been turned into if it was possible that removing a clue can invalidate the setter's original solution. At least here, all we had to fear was a loss of uniqueness and human solvability.
@Sam_on_YouTube
@Sam_on_YouTube Год назад
@@minamagdy4126 There's no chance that missing a clue on a puzzle like this, with no negative contraints, would invalidate the intended solution. But it is very lucky that it didn't eliminate the ability to solve it uniquely.

Today was that day. What a puzzle, and what a video. Simon, I always do like watching you do the region-defining sorts of puzzles, whether they be snakes or yin-yang or this sort of thing. And I happen to enjoy odd/even puzzles (moreso when they do not devolve into two separate puzzles, actually). This was amazing as a video and a solve, and I am so impressed that you made your way through it. I for sure will not try it the way you did it; I might possibly try it with the additional clue that should have been there - but probably not. I am content to have watched you solve it. I suspect that it was just coincidence that not but a few days after I suggested making it so that there could be colored lines that it got added in, but in the unlikely odds that it was done due to the suggestion that is awesome that it was added in so quickly.

I think it is amazing how much logic and facts that Simon and Mark keep in their minds while they solve these complex puzzles. Using letters would have involved him finding the button in the interface, using the letter, remembering to return to line mode or number mode or wherever he wanted to be more of the time, then doing it all again to change the letter. I don't think it necessarily would have made the video clearer for solver or viewer, and might have made it more awkward for Simon. He has said before that he does not use the number keypad on his keyboard because he prefers to use the numbers across the top. Would it make things quicker for him if he did use the number pad? Maybe. Do I wish that he would make the switch? No. I want him and Mark to solve the way they want to, and then I will watch the videos and enjoy them have a comfortable and hopefully fun time of it. BUT your comments about using the letter tool may help other solvers who have not established their preferred ways of doing these complicated puzzles, so keep at it. I am sure I tried the letter tool once or twice because of seeing it urged in comments on these videos.

This was one of the hardest puzzles I've actually completed. It was just hard the whole way, it's not like some puzzles where there's a tough break-in and then it flows from there. This was hard the entire time. Once I found all the pentominos it still took me forever to disambiguate the 1/9 and 3/7 pairs on the Xs. Really brilliant puzzle.

made it in like 2.5 hours with a bit of help from simone then and there. With these types of puzzles I like to get hasty with my logic and tend to get contradictions. Glad I can always check back to see if everything so far was right

Sorting the parity of the X's is easier than the way Simon approaches it: column 5 has 3 X's, so one of them has to be even, therefore, no other X can be even because you run out of even pentomenos.
@jonnybolton4659
@jonnybolton4659 Год назад
not necessarily; there could be one shared pentomino between two even Xs providing they're close enough; so this logic only eliminates Xs that aren't close enough to column 5; I think this is the first two he tries but not the third
@Mn0ty
@Mn0ty Год назад
@@jonnybolton4659 Actually not possyble. Two even X's, could place one even digits each on the same pentomino, but not all fout in two pentominos so that would be three pentominos without adressing the one on the top right, which would make a fourth.

I solved the same version in much the same way. Frankly I think it is better this way. It took me a while to start thinking about where the 'I' could go which seems to be a pretty important deduction.

I had a thought near the beginning when simon said that there could be repeated pentominoes. I solved it assuming that when one pentomino was found that no others can be the same shape, like simon did in the solve. now tho i wonder if it's possible to have repeats with 13+ pentominoes

Got stuck a few times... Spent a while going down incorrect assumptions until I realised that every odd number being in a pentomino meant there had to be one in the mid/bottom right cells, and attaching all the X/Vs with only 8 odd pentominos was a lot more limiting than allowing 9... Tried putting the I in as the floating for a bit, but it kept pressuring the top right. Breakthrough putting it on the bottom line (as the only option). Finding the even pento in the top right wasn't a + meant I knew the floater. Resulted in all the colouring before the numbers (as you can get there without finding the first 5). Annoyingly tried a 7 on the thermo as I assumed it'd break due to the pressure it applied in various places, but it turns out I just kept going and solved it via a guess I assumed was wrong... Time of 80 mins (using the correct puzzle with extra clue).

Attempting to catch up on old puzzles a bit, this one was a real fun one. I didn't quite solve it on my own, using a few hints, but was able to get most of it by myself. Of course I solved the puzzle that was supposed to be solved, not the one Simon did with the missing clue. Thank God the puzzle was still unique without that clue as it would have been a real shame if Simon had made so much progress only to get stuck in with a uniqueness problem and wondering what went wrong.

72:12 for me. I have absolutely no idea how I managed to solve this one, but I somehow got there in the end. I think I focused too much on how to connect the even pentominoes at the beginning and the actual key for the solve were the odd ones. Anyways, I’ll have to check the video to see if I missed something this time. Absolutely brutal puzzle either way.

182:08, and I did the easy version. i love XV puzzles and shading parity. I gotta say, the break in was awesome but damn i was not expecting 3 puzzles in one - pentomino, followed by xv shading and then fill in the cells. Feels like there isnt enuf space to notate haha we need a professional layers tool for sudoku. I used blue for odd and pink for even so my brain kinda hurts watching this video.

Maybe a bit nitpicky, but - do the rules allow that pentominoes overlap? I haven't started either the puzzle or the video yet - well, the puzzle inasmuch, as i studied the rules and drew edge markings for the Xs and Vs -, but I'm pretty sure, a "cannot overlap" is often explicitly stated in the rules. It definitely is in snake rules. Anyway, I'll start assuming there is a non-overlap rule, since it is pretty natural. And I will probably get stuck somewhere along the solve and resort to the video for inspiration...

You could have gotten a complete pentomino as early as 27:00. Without even pencilmarking, you know that row 3 contains the digits 1-4 due to having two V-dominoes. That means there are only three odds remaining in the row: 5, 7 and 9. In box 1, you know the odd X-domino must contain one low (1/3) and one high (7/9) odd digit. Since the high digit cannot repeat in the box, the three bottom cells in box 1 (row 3) lose one of the three available odd digits, forcing r3c3 to be even, which forces a W-pentomino.

I think Simon's time would be more reasonable if he didn't proclaim "i see no problem with that [pentomino which puts 5 evens in a row]" a few times, but how can i complain - i failed to solve it myself, the simple in retrospect task of finding the right spot to start odd/even coloring eluded me and i gave up.
