The Cubli: a cube that can jump up, balance, and 'walk'

The Cubli is a 15 × 15 × 15 cm cube that can jump up and balance on its corner. Reaction wheels mounted on three faces of the cube rotate at high angular velocities and then brake suddenly, causing the Cubli to jump up. Once the Cubli has almost reached the corner stand up position, controlled motor torques are applied to make it balance on its corner. In addition to balancing, the motor torques can also be used to achieve a controlled fall such that the Cubli can be commanded to fall in any arbitrary direction. Combining these three abilities -- jumping up, balancing, and controlled falling -- the Cubli is able to 'walk'.
Lead Researchers: Gajamohan Mohanarajah and Raffaello D'Andrea
This work was done at the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control, ETH Zurich, Switzerland and was funded in part by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), grant number 146717.

What's incredible to me is that they were not only able to balance it on a corner but balance it and counter the torque to keep it from spinning on its corner. Amazing.

Check out the device that balances 3 hinged pendulums....vertically! Now THAT is freaking mind blowing.... But I agree, being able to pop itself up onto a point is pretty neat. I wonder if itll ever saturate...probably not since its at surface gravity and theres friction against whatever its sitting on. Also wonder if they can quiet it down some if they sealed it and pulled a bit of a vacuum.....

....This video is 10 years old.... Its not that the feedback loops didnt exist, they did. Its that the technology was too expensive and large to achieve something so small with everything on board at a mass it could easily effect. The biggest development that allowed this thing to be built is the development and perfection of MEMS devices. Those, what was it like 6, gyro/accelerometer units together take up less volume than a single axis version of the style before it (which again were expensive as hell). And the MEMS devices can update a hell of a lot faster. Granted they're not analog like the old ones could be, but with how systems are built these days (data goes to a central processing unit then instructions are sent to relevant sub systems vs a sensor input being conditioned, amplified, and directly driving a hydraulic valve for example and the computers just monitored the signal possibly had an ability to modify it some but the point is sensors directly affecting control devices) your signal resolution is only as good as the ADC that converts sensor element readings to binary anyways. AND the error of modern sensors, especially after some well developed filtering is applied is WAY below analogs trustworthy resolution anyways....

A shout-out to those who think that Cubli is a gyroscope. It is not. In a gyroscope the wheel spins at a high angular velocity to keep constant orientation. In the Cubli we use reaction torques to balance. These torques are what the Cubli's structure 'feels' when the three motors attached to it accelerate or decelerate the wheels. In fact, Cubli's controller tries to minimize wheel velocities in addition to keeping the structure upright. This method is more reactive to external disturbances and reduces vibrations and sensor noise. Hope you enjoyed the video! (original comment modified for simplicity, Thanks *****)

@@ThorbjrnRagnar I feel like there's a problem with the design which could probably be solved fairly easily. What I'm thinking of is how the cube has to *build up* momentum before it can jump. This means it can't do things super quickly, but perhaps having higher torque(/higher speed?) motors in it would solve that. Edit: Another problem is: what if the battery runs out? But I imagine that could be solved with the same technique as wireless charging, or even just contact pads on the cube itself, that could pass a current through the whole system of cubes to charge them. In fact, if you did that, you might not even need that large of a battery on it in the first place unless you need the cubes to be able to go solo occasionally

@@BedStuyBro I know a few people who have used them for surgeries (as part of a weight loss surgery support group) - most of them are very happy with their results, one of them is, in her words "totally disfigured" - The way she tells it, they removed too much skin during the tummy tuck, leaving it too tight to allow for movement (which is heavily encouraged as early as 12 hours post surgery, apparently?) and swelling. Some stitches popped and got infected and after 12 days in hospital (in Australia) and surgery to remove the infected tissue, her abdomen has several large scars instead of just the one that she was promised by the surgeons. I also know of someone who has to go in for revision surgery because she kept losing weight after the original one leaving her with more skin - that's partially on her but mostly on them as they should have checked that her weight was stable and HAD been stable for at least 12 months (or so the plastic surgeon I spoke to a while back said) before they did any cosmetic procedures - to make sure this very issue didn't happen. Personally I wouldn't use them, but that's mostly because I can't imagine anything WORSE than being on an international flight while healing from surgery. If I'm going to do it, I'd rather just pay more and get top service in Australia. Every doctor everywhere has had a bad outcome or two, getting it done in Australia, Thailand or anywhere else does not guarantee you'll be in the "good outcome" or "bad outcome" group - it's all about doing research and deciding what you're willing to risk based on the information you find within that research.

I think they meant jump in the loose way. Like the way you jump out of bed, or that you're jumpy when scared. You don't actively jump but you have a fast movement suddenly. Like for instance The guy jumped up from his chair and ran. He didn't actually jump, he just stood up very quickly which can be perceived as jumping. Open up your mind bro.

:). I thought it was funny anyway. I suspect there might be some issues with the foundation for a large building balancing on a point. The Millenium Tower can't stop sinking with a pretty robust distributed foundation. Perhaps some high power magnets to distribute the load would work? You might need the magnetic field from a neutron star to make it work but that's just an engineering problem. And then every now and then somebody could screw with the reaction wheels as a sort of practical joke. The world needs this.
