I've only read the first book so far but btw this book is actually set on earth but in an alternate history where Neanderthals-esque individuals also survived, so history is changed. It's a really cool worldbuilding detail IMO. Anyway, the ending of the book being a major bummer sucks. I'm about to start book 2 so hopefully it all lands for me.

Spoiler: I would have liked it better if Roper's comeback had lead to a chain of events that would've made it seem like they might overcome the impossible odds, only for all of them to die. And then some other resolution to the story after their extinction. Being unsatisfying doesn't make a tragic ending good.

The Wolf - 4/5 The Spider - 2/5 The Cuckoo - 1/5 I wish I hadn’t wasted my time on this trilogy.

I actually had the reverse experience: I liked the first book the least out of the three, I think the writing was immature, the characters were not well developed, and the story got solved a bit too easily. I think that the second book is way better in the writing and in the depth given to the characters. The last book for me is the best... without going into spoilers, I think that the "surprise" works for me exactly because of how it turns out, this "mid-way" is much more realistic. I get that for a tale to be "epic" one might want the all-or-nothing, but I was able to feel much more connected to this race of humanoids, more than to the humans, because of the choice they made in the end.

Always a shame when a series doesn’t land with that cathartic emotional thrill where it seemed perfect for us in how it all played out. I’ll still be giving this series a go and hope it works even better for me!

I loved this series and was fully invested, but im the same as you, the ending put a sour taste in my mouth, it was emotional but disappointing

Really random question but where did you buy your Fitz and the Fool books? I want those covers, was able to get Farseer, Liveship and Tawny Man with the good covers from Amazon, but they don’t seem to have Fitz and the Fool :(

Is it pronounced “coo-koo” or “cuh-koo”? I was pronouncing it “cuh-koo” the whole time

Pity you didn't feel the same way I felt about this book. It and The Spider are what got me out of a two year long reading slump and the words RANGALIST still inspire me. I want to get them as a tatoo with the Wolf symbol on top. However, I can see why you would feel disappointed and if the author stuck with the original plot development I don't think it would have affected the end result of the story much. With that said, it would have missed out on a siginifcant emotional moment between the two main characters and from personal experience, I kind of 'get' why the female main character reacted in such a bizarre way. It's bizarre and out of character for you but I saw it coming and it made sense to me. SPOILERS: If a ghost from the past like Roper came back to steal whatever power and respect I had taken a decade to build up I'd be pissed too. Keturah was always overshadowed by her husband; her response isn't the best response but it is very human.

Yeah I hear you. But I always got the sense that Keturah truly loved Roper. Having him come back should have been an emotionally happy moment, with undertones of bitterness. But it felt like she was an emotionless robot. I'm really glad you loved it though!

If you enjoy politics you must love The Witcher books 😜

As someone who authentically loved Lady of the Lake, and overall still am glad I read the Witcher series, the politics and world building in those books is far and away the weakest part. The politics of the world is told through this one-off chapters of kings, sorcerors, and other leaders talking about the world state, but it at the absolute most is tangential to the story of Geralt, Ciri, and Yennifer. Like, you could remove nearly *all* of those chapters, and the books would still function. In my view, they make the books worse than they could have been.
