I grew up in Portland when this was all happening. Every night on the news we had updates on what was going on, this was pretty serious. After the community fell and property was being cleared out for sale some family friends thought they'd drive through to see what it looked like. They were turned away by "private security" with machine guns.

I never trusted her." I asked if she had been there then (I had no idea she might have been), and she said she had, and it was all Sheela... She believed that. I like to think that this person had no idea what was really going on there and was just well meaning and misled...

Most of the info in the video is correct, and that is very sad. I was there several times for a few weeks - before that I was several times in Pune - and it was the best I have ever done, no doubt about that. It changed my life profoundly and I still benefit from it. The video shows no understanding about WHY we were there, but that is normal, I am used to that. I cannot explain what being near a master meant for me and I can not explain how meditation helped. The "propagating free love" is way over exagerated (and I am used to that, too). Yes, Osho said sex is good for you (and it is), but that was about it. Also he hoped we would be able to "transcend" it and leave it behind us, but for some reason that is never reported in the press... Yes, there was lots of love, but is was not "propagated", nor forced upon you or whatsoever. It just happened spontaneously, as a result of people being relaxed and openminded and saying "yes" to live in stead of "no". The funny thing is many of the initiative came from the women. Why? I don't know. Apparantly, they felt free. The wrongdoings this video shows are apalling, deeply regrettable and they are absolutely in no way coherent with the lectures the master gave to us. Yet, these wrongdoings were there. We who came as visitors for a few weeks had no idea that any of this was going on. All I can say is that the last time I was there (i think summer 1985) there was "something in the air" that felt different, less "light" then before. But i could not pinpoint it. It is easy for me to blame it all on Sheela, but in the back of my mind that seems too easy. Usually Osho knew what was going on, so in this case, I simply don't know. And yes, it bothers me. All of this is not the reason I answer here. I write here because the most important, and the most obvious thing is not mentioned in this video. That thing is: "THEY COULD HAVE LEFT US ALONE". As the video shows clearly, the ranch was absolutely remote, far behind hills, in nowhere-land. Most "nearby" was Antilope, but even that was a ride of about one hour if I remember correctly. The people of Antilope had in no way any harm from the Ranch. That is, until the "troubles" began. The troubles began when redneck Oregonions felt that this "cult" should not be there. It did not fit with their beliefsystems. So they started to say it was bad for nature, the landscape, not conform rules for spatial planning etc. That is where things want wrong. Now, if ever any commune was respectful to nature it was us. All was built with wood, very careful, and ready to take out again. Nature was respected, food was grown only natural. In short: the place was extremely beautiful. And it would stil be, if the Oregonians had left us alone. The overtaking of Antilope, the voters fraude, all of it would have been totally unnessary if they had only let us be. But being redneck, they just could not. Would be good if the video said that.

It's crazy OSHO never preached about violence or harming anyone. He was using his own techniques to transform people like every Guru uses as per the times they live. He never promised his disciples and heaven...... But what's interesting is that these type of documentaries are never made on the Pope or the Churches which have done horrendous things to this world with their beliefs.

Most of his followers were not criminals. They had a strange lifestyle, but that doesn't make them bad. As far as Osho.....I think he is also responsible for what happened, because he was the one who put Sheela in charge. It says a lot about him and his judgement. Osho was pushing Sheela to solve the problems that they were having and because Sheela loved and worshipped him, she was willing to do anything to please him. Sometimes ppl do crazy things to protect the things and the people they love and believe in.

I apologise to all watchers and readers if I do go on about such things as this. A subject that is interesting if not a despicable subject that we can all learn from. I also apologise for my "jokingly" made comments because its certainly not a funny subject but I think a lot of us can relate to putting humour in our comments at times. Very lop sided….although I personally wasn’t there in the commune. I personally know many people that were there and live prosperous fulfilling lives and had children in the commune. Osho didn’t create AIDS he was adamant about people using contraceptives because of AIDS and was one of the only commune leaders to talk openly about AIDS at a time when the US government didn’t want to admit that everyone could get and transfer Aids. About free love that is a funny statement …just because he didn’t practice or insist on his commune being a place of celibacy during a time in history where most communes did. Also remember Osho was in the 70, and 80 when people where pretty promiscuous in general and still are to date. About Sheila….well yes she did many unethical and illegal things that landed her and her small group of assistants in jail. osho wasn’t convicted since he didn’t master mind any of that since he was in silence meditation for the years of the commune in Oregon. When he came out of silence he called the Feds in to make right what Sheila had done. People of Oregon didn’t like the Sannyasin for many reasons but one of the main reasons being that the commune and many of the Sannyasin were not of the same religion faith of Christianity and in their minds threaten their way of lives…wanting to keep Christianity the forefront of their county. Today this location is a Christian retreat center!
