I've got the 12" of 'Resurrection Joe' must dig it out. If any of you aren't familiar with, it's one of their best tunes released in '84 between 'Dreamtime' and 'Love'.
raw. Ian is one of the best frontmen of rock and his voice is completely underrated, He puts his whole heart and soul into his singing and has great style. I just saw an interview recently and Ian's voice is still great. Billy Duffy one of the best guitarists of our time. This is what Jim Morrison would have sounded like if he were still alive and had kept drinking. garage band grunge. raw. real, down to earth. love it! nothing like it today. not even close.
I saw a 30 second glimpse of the Fire Woman music video when I was 10 and I had nightmares for months, I thought I was possessed by the devil...I found out later it was just Ian Astbury and Rock N Roll baby! 🤘🏻🎸 Still listnin' after all these years, still a pillar of the 80's.
Was walking through the Charlotte airport this year (2023) and stopped by one of my favorite bars in the E concourse. This song was playing and three twenty-somethings stopped me and asked what the band was. My reply was "This is the Cult, the one band that a person can listen to and never NOT be considered cool afterwards. Their sound changes over the years, but they'll never disappoint you."
Living in Chapel Hill in 87 and bought their 2nd CD(had Peace Dog) when it came out and couldn't get enough of this CD. There was an interview I read at the time the Cult was touring with Billy Idol. The Cult was supposed to be the biggest Party Band. Supposedly they put every one else to shame! No one could hang with them! Incredible.
Played a bunch of Cult songs on the PA during a session break at a team building event this week. Five people came up to me and said that hearing the songs was a real treat. The Cult has definitely withstood the test of time.
So being a skater back in 1989 (16 years old ) Heading to parties in the evening after a full skateboarding day , Hanging out at friends , The cult always got played ! They represented us 👌
@@scott7521 i give you that, but I would argue that AC/DC was more bluesy and less metal than Electric. I don't like Sonic Temple at all... I feel it was way overproduced and not dirty enough... plus the songwriting is just not as good as Electric... Wildflower? That's a damn good jam.
Ive seen them 16 times beginning on this tour 1987 and I can say that their 2019 Sonic Temple 30 tour and the show I caught a few months ago in 2022 were the 2 best shows I've ever seen them play. I have never seen them have a weak show...and looking at this clip which is 35 years old...they sound even better in 2022...Ian's voice hasn't given out a bit..Billy's tone is actually better than it has ever been...having John Tempesta on drums for the last 12 years has easily given them the solid backbone that was their only missing link (not that any of their drummers have been bad...but Tempesta is hands down the best of the 5 drummers I've seen them perform with) They will forever be one of my all time favorites
My 1st concert was in May 1987, with The Cult opening for Billy Idol @ the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, Ca. I wasn't familiar with the band & their music & didn't really appreciate it as fully as I should have. I still kick myself to this day for witnessing one of rock's greatest venues & not appreciating it to the fullest extent. The ensuing weeks that followed, they got quite a bit of air play on the local radio, KROQ. That's when I got hooked & been enamored with their music ever since. I've been fortunate enough to have seen them in concert 4 more times.( 1990, '96, '02, & '17) There'll never be another band like them. The soul, the vibe, the majesty, & the mystique will never be replicated, that I can say with certainty. Anybody who's ever heard one note played by these marvelous musicians will be transformed for the better forever. Long live The Cult. (With a respectful shout out to Billy Idol & Steve Stevens.)
I understand I saw Pink Floyd in 1994 straight outta highschool and they hadn’t quite sunk in for me. Lucky for me I was able yo watch Roger Waters in full glory a couple months ago to make up for it.
So ahead of the curve. These guys were a breath of fresh air to 15-year old me...as I just got my driver's license, cruising my hometown in 1980 Ford Crown Vic (thanks for that, Pops, btw) this album dropped and became my theme music...(especially Lil Devil)
My favorite Band!! I saw them way long time ago in Dallas.Billy Idol was the headliner but I walked away loving this band more! Gotta love Ian Ashbury brains and talent!
Yeah, The Cult is 1000 times better than Metallica. Metallica is just beating the shit out of everything, doesnt make sense. Lars Ulrich doesnt know how to play drums. Meanwhile look at this guy. THAT OPENING AND CLOSING HI-HAT IN NIRVANA. That guy is actually good drummer.
I was fortunate to be exposed to Love as a teen thanks to MTV show IRS Cutting Edge... also X, Jesus and Mary Chain, Tom Waits, Let's Active, Hoodoo Gurus and stuff like Bones Brigade skateboard videos... those were the good old days...
I miss Jamie Stewart in the band. A long time ago, but I loved his bass playing. As you can see here he was originally a guitarist who then played the bass. I miss his backing vocals as well.
So true! We've been spoilt over the years. I've noticed the South American crowds today have the same enthusiasm, they haven't seen too much of it. Yet.
I've been to many gigs in the eighties. Some audiences were lame as hell too back then 🙂 The pogos sometimes were really wild though...small wars. Depended on the day. Don't generalize too soon. And the asses pushing crowds from the back during RATM or RHCP concerts...who misses them? 😉
Ian Astbury is the modern day Jim Morrison!!! I believe it! Looks, moves, and Incredible voice, and not to mention, such exquisite hair!!! And... The Cult is ultra-hot rockin’!!!
Saw the band twice on this tour - the Electric tour 1987. Brighton and Portsmouth and they slayed both times. I remember staying up to record this off the telly - they aired this on BBC1! Crazy. It was so exciting. The crowd - havin' it!! Everyone in the moment. Excellent. Ridiculous.
I watch this concert back in the day, sitting all alone in the front room of a detached house on Benfield Way in Portslade, East Sussex. I was a twenty-year-old Swedish student, having come to England to improve my English and study Modern English Theatre. I sat in awe, transfixed on Ian Astbury.
Because they are English and the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of fame is an American institution. Also Ian wasn't very complimentary about it...self serving was how he described it.
I am still loving it and now it's 2022. Back in the day..I believed if I could meet Ian we would end up growing old together. ((Sigh)) I still believe except now we would just be old together..lol. I'm cool with that.😘
The band has always lived up to its name; one of my fav bands ever and this is an amazing performance during the electric tour. Thank you for sharing 🔥💓🔥
Saw them on that tour all those years ago at The Guildhall, Portsmouth and this was them on top of their game. They were quality and out of the many gigs I've been to in my my lifetime, ranks in my memory as one of the best.
@@fleedermouse yeah, he was incredible. They opened for Billy Idol. First time I went to a concert to see the opening band. So glad I did. It was epic.
First time I seen or even heard of The Cult was when they were musical guest on SNL..85? I was hooked. The Canadian connection with Ian was a cool bonus too. But they put out some kick ass tunes over the years. Very under rated band. Shake it, don't break it baby!
Thank you Travis for sharing this amazing concert of one the best of all time ! They never disappoint and this one captures them at the top of their game ! Love it ! Long live The Cult !
The cult will always have a very high position in my music collection , they are and always have been EVERYTHING A REAL TRUE ROCK AND ROLL BAND IS ABOUT, AND THEY HAVE ALWAYS REMAINED VERY HUMBLE. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS OF COURSE THE MAGNIFICANT TRAIL OF MUSICAL ARTWORK THEY HAVE LAID AT THE ALTER OF ROCK AND ROLL FOR US THE LISTEN TO FOREVER.. IN THE 80S I CANNOT THINK OF ANOTHER BAND MORE AUTHENTIC THEN THE CULT ALONG SIDE GUNS AND ROSES. BOTH BANDS WERE REAL , AND WHAT YOU SAW WAS WHAT YOU GOT, IAN ALWAYS STAYING ON THE SPIRITUAL EDGE WHILE CREATING HIS LEGACY IS WHAT KEPT HIM REVERED AS ONE OF THE BEST SONGWRITER/PERFORMERS OF HIS TIME. THIER SOUND IS ONE OF A KIND AND IS VERY POWERFUL. THE CULT WILL RING TRUE THROUGH SOUL EVEN LONG AFTER IM DEAD..SOME OF THE GREATEST MUSIC IVE EVER HEARD..
