The Cult is a band that I haven't given a lot of attention to over the years. I remember they were huge at the end of the 80's into the 90's. Although She Sells Sanctuary is still a radio standard, the majority of their material has been largely forgotten. A student of mine wanted to learn Sun King and Fire Woman off of their fourth studio album Sonic Temple. When I heard Sun King I was totally blown away by the guitar solo. This past week I've been listening to the band non stop and they do have a lot of great material. Right now my favorite Cult album is definitely the Love album. It sounds like a more aggressive a cooler early U2 album. Billy Duffy's guitar tone is perfect. The album Electric was a complete left turn for the band. They decided that they wanted to become a stripped down Hard Rock band in the style of
AC/DC. The album sounds awesome but I much prefer the bands earlier sound. Sonic Temple shows the band wanted to go in a more post Hair Metal style that was big at the end of the 80's and hiring producer Bob Rock was a perfect decision. I'm looking forward to checking out the bands later albums post Sonic Temple. I watched a cult album ranking episode on Sea of Tranquility and I was intrigued by the guest's love for the later records.
