One of my favourite versions of the partly improvised song All Mine, which was only played in 1982, being a reworking of the more usual partly improvised track Forever.
Show info: www.cure-conce...
My lyric transcription attempt:
???? the way you always open me so [father's?] ????
Open up the doors
You said we'd come to talk to you
You'll always come in sorrow
Looking for the safe, same old always
Same old over you
Just one [look?] ???? summer rain
Turn away turn away from you
Same old over you
Save you, save you there
???? if I [take?] home
Wonder if I can
Wonder if I care
You are a thing to me to behold
All the same, in love again you're waiting for days
Turn away to go
The last [thing] is something beautiful
It's as I see your eyes calling
Then this is - always seems to fall away
????? time
??? away ?????
????? never see -
See your face again ????
She always goes ???
Always ???? over ?????
????
????
????
????
Always ????
See my face again
And all ???? eyes will go
Nothing will make me stay
Nothing will make her go
So we stand there looking at each other
So we stand there looking at each other for days and days and days

The guitar riff at the start sound like an early version of the one on Prayers For Rain

I'd not noticed that before, but yes, there are definitely similarities! Thanks.

t'as tout compris.

Each version of this piece is unique. And the sound is always incredible : heavy, furious...fantastic ! David, from France (adoptive country of The Cure)

Great guitar improvisation in the beginning by Robert. Very trippy and heavy.

I'm finding it extremely difficult to make out the lyrics - do you know what they are / where to find? Cheers, from Sue.

The lyrics of All Mine are always improvised on the spot at each performance, though often around certain themes and phrases. I've tried transcribing a few versions previously that you can find on my channel, but haven't done this one before. Here's my first attempt, which I'll also put in the description [???] and the way you always [open] me so far again Open up the doors you said we come to talk to you And always come in sorrow Looking for the safe, same old always Same hold over you [Just] one [look] at those summer [things] Turn away, turn away from you Same hold over you Safe if I save you there Couldn't I save you? wonder if i can wonder if i care You are a thing to me to behold Oh your name is.... Over there you're waiting for him Turn away to go, the last place is somewhere [beautiful?] As i see your eyes calling Say this is always [seeming] to fall away. ?????? one more time [Fighting] over you ?????? so I feel In your face I can see ??? See you always go ??? Always go, always ????? ????? [like a cat?] ????? ????? Always .... see my face again And [always] her eyes will go Nothing will make me stay And nothing will make her go But we stand looking at each other We stand looking at each other for days and days and days and days

@@infov0y Thank you so much for that information, and the attempted deciphering! :-) That's so helpful. I don't particularly love Disc 1 of Join The Dots, but this kind of track does appeal to me - or at least to the deep dark gloomy 20-something that still lives in me somewhere! ;-)

@@RedMoonSanctuaryWA Is this Sue from curefans I'm talking to? If so sorry, I didn't realise that before! Anyway, to give a quick(ish) history off this song, there's a mostly instrumental on 1980's Seventeen Seconds called Three: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1Y2dh14HWWY.html They sometimes played this live in 1980 and Robert improvised vocals on top, the most famous example being a happy birthday version to Simon: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_ipVgMPeLDw.html The reason this altered version ended up being called Forever is that in January 1981 they recorded a John Peel studio session on Radio One, and along with early versions of Faith tracks included a version to which they gave that name. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gJuT9Usjt-w.html Throughout the 1981 tours they played Forever, usually as the final song, again with improvised lyrics. As the tour went on the sound and effects on the song got darker ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OeB5hLTw7d4.html But in 1982, after a few shows where they did the same, they changed the song quite a bit - the chord sequences are different - even darker than before. On many bootlegs from the time the song is either still referred to as Forever, or given a name made-up from some of the decipherable lyrics (e.g. "Face", "All I have to do is kill her"). But after the release of the Curiosity compilation on the cassette B-side of the Concert LP in 1984, the song was referred to as "All Mine" (it's the same truncated version of the full recording released later on Join The Dots). These name oddities have caused much confusion over the years - it was an oft argued point on the old Cure message boards back in the day! So to finish, here's the full version of the JTD recording. My lyrics transcription is in the description: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--ZwfsRhnqeI.html And here's the other most famous version, that often gets called "All i have to do is kill her" as it was referred to as that on the original vinyl bootleg. It's perhaps the most fully formed version and the clearest lyrics (see first comment) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_yDH9Oj4Rnk.html After the band split in 1982 the song was never played again, but Forever reappeared in 1983 (very odd version) and 1984 (more like it was originally) and has been an occasionally played classic ever since - always (I think) as the final song. So, with that knowledge at hand, if you weren't already, you're now officially a member of the Cure geekdom. ;)

Wow, this is like a course! :-) Yes, this is SueC, and I should have identified myself properly earlier. Our YT channel is named after our eco-farm and is mostly about donkeys, building a strawbale house, hippie DIY stuff etc, so to make that association would have been difficult. The Cure and...kale! The Cure and...donkeys! The Cure and...landscape rehabilitation. The Cure and...compost toilets. (Well, that one would obviously belong to The Stranglers, with Golden Brown...) Thank you for the induction into geekdom - now with The Cure! :-) The first clip appeared to be an accidental repeat of the main clip, so I found Three off 17 Seconds and listened to that first, before continuing down the list (always nice to have a soundtrack when it's tax/unavoidable paperwork time). That Happy Birthday song - ROFL. Talking about the tragedy of never being a teenager again, and being "old" at 20 - it seems that this long-standing "OMG I'm getting old" theme started rather early on. Is that what comes of being a late addition to a family and feeling like you're the family baby? Or maybe his parents were like mine, and forever stressing about getting old, which doesn't set a good example (thankfully I married into a different attitude - very helpful). I was looking on Disc 1 of Join The Dots and couldn't find anything called Forever or All Mine. The variations do grow to be rather wrist-slitting, or maybe it's just what happens when listening to something like this for 30 minutes instead of 5... who knows... I'll have to come back to it to see if it then improves. (I have the same problem with Pink Floyd a lot of the time - play it to me for 5 minutes and Iike it, play it for 20 and my head starts to hurt...) Thank again! :-)

@@RedMoonSanctuaryWA Aha, I don;t tend to notice the usernames on here, but when I did I twigged it might be you! I fixed the link thanks, and you're right - All Mine isn't on JTD but the Pornography deluxe edition. Originally though it was only on the Curiosity cassette which I had back in the late 80s: images.45worlds.com/f/ca/the-cure-concert-the-cure-live-shake-dog-shake-fiction-records-ca.jpg and All Mine was one of my favourite songs, still is. But the version on there is truncated: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-10Q5HWaM__M.html And it wasn't until some time in the mid ninetees on a Cure message board that I discovered there were other different versions and that the one I had must have a longer form. One of the main reasons I started tape trading concerts was to get hold of the All Mine versions.. On the Happy Birthday version of Forever, yeah, quite a few of those early ones are a bit silly, but the theme of getting old is everywhere in Cure songs. Same as him and you, I've always felt that way - 15 was when it hit me! I think it's a loss of childhood innocence and the ability to live in imaginary worlds as the 'adult' world starts to rip you out. One of the main influences on his early songs was the Fuchsia Groan character in Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast who lives in imaginary worlds. She's mentioned explicitly in The Drowning Man and in other live and early versions of songs. Drowning Man from Curiosity (live 1981) about the sudden senseless death of Fuchsia: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MRUZMIH3UW4.html Peel session of The Holy Hour (early version with mostly nonsense lyrics, but first word is Fuchsia - same session as Forever) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QsSYtwCQUUU.html There also seems to be a childhood incident with a girl - maybe Mary, maybe someone before her - that's referred to in many songs (possibly also the girl in A Forest) and the loss of a childhood love plays into the loss of childhood innocence I think. Did for me anyway! This 1979 song, again unreleased until the deluxe editions (and the basis for the very different "Another Day" on Three Imaginary Boys) captures both themes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XHsm-8AB3pk.html Another fave. All these songs are. Anyway, I'd better stop as I could continue this history lecture indefinitely... *chuckle*
