The Cure is one of the greatest bands in the history of music. They are exquisitely unique and frankly unrepeatable. Though Robert Smith and company have influenced scores of bands that have followed they have created music that is so intensely magical and so deliciously soul invigorating it’s almost impossible to try and define it I’m sure that my story with this band is no different than your own. They were one of the musical institutions that saved me in the youthful coming of age period of deep confusion and overpowering despair that is high school. Robert Smith is one of the most gifted poets and singers of any era going back centuries. I will spend many more hours in the future, celebrating their deep and expansive collection of songs and albums but today I focus on 5 hidden Gems, from some of their greatest albums like Disintegration, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, and The Head on the Door, also non singles, album tracks, b sides, the Cure has so many that are better than their hits and I want to cover 5 today that you should either discover or re visit as they are life changing and massively essential. Let’s get into it.

Best lyricist but also best songwriter completely. Let's not forget that he writes most of the music, plays lead guitar on most, plays bass (even plays 6-string bass as a guitar sometimes), keyboards. He is the singular greatest and most important musician of modern music (ie music once lyrics were added). No one, no team of people, compate to him. He's like the Highlander. There can be only one lol.

Not just spiritual but the unique and worldly soundscapes his songs have had. Robert doesn't get enough appreciation for the latter whether it's the oriental Kyoto, Latin flavor of The Blood and Last Dance and the mideastern vibe of Drowning Man.

Plainsong still gets me. We saw them in 1989 for the Prayer tour at Shoreline. They opened with Plainsong and I still get shivers thinking about how that made me feel to hear the windchimes and the opening chords. My late ex loved The Cure. He dedicated one of their "slow" songs to me, but I can't remember the name (I may have blocked it out of my brain). Other than The Cure's two songs that are constantly played on the '80s on 8', I haven't been able to bring myself to listen to any of their songs, so I'm not familiar with the songs. I clicked on this for him. And though it hurt, the pain wasn't as bad as I expected. Don't know when I'll ever listen to a full CD, but I thank you for posting this video. P.s. Two simple but beautiful songs, both musically and lyrically, are Untitled and Trust. I love to play them on the old harmonium at my in-laws house, or wherever there's a piano around. Very sentimental.

Great topic and great great picks! I must throw a song in here: From The head On The Door, my favorit track has always been: The Push! What a magnificent (almost) stadion rock anthem. I could pick a hundred more, but iv'e leave it with that one song. Cheers from Denmark

I was telling myself I will not put a list of my own. But here you are, asking for it, so here they are. Sugar Girl / The exploding boy / Pilbox Tales / Piggy in the mirror / Treasure . I am seriously thinking to have Treasure played at my funeral. Your list is great by the way. I always felt Plainsong, The same deep water as you, Prayers for rain and Untitled tells a story going from inafuation to despair.

Great list Prof Rock. I am surprised no one has mentioned: "To Wish Impossible Things". This was a very unrated and epic love song. The opening is so melancholy and chilling and flows into this nebulous, sadden-love trance. I really hope the live version from "Show" if ever re-released includes this song like the original concert film VHS.

Often in plainsong and plainchant music of the past, a composer would use an old chant, but slow down and draw out the notes to create a new song. I always felt that this was elemental in The Cure’s Plainsong title choice as it is a clear slowing down of A Thousand Hours off of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me.

I just saw them again this summer and they still fill me full of emotion and joy, the same way they did when I was a teen. I think Robert is the reincarnation of John Keats. More than a song writer. More than a singer. He truly is a Poet!

One of the things that hits me hardest about Disintegration as an album is that it has an absolutely lovely, perfect beginning AND end. It starts with the twinkly windchime sound and that CRASH, and ends with an incredibly sad lyric and then the fading music that sounds like someone giving up, and then it resolves into a decisive end. And then you just want to sit for a few minutes with your feelings. Fun fact: I Am Kloot did a song in 2003 called "The Same Deep Water as Me" that doesn't sound like The Cure musically, but has a similarly melancholy feel. It's very worth a listen. Finally: Seaside 84 did a cover of "Plainsong" with some soaring electronic instrumentation. It's not better than the original--of course--but it's a wonderful cover.

Ok. I dont think I could be as expressive as you when you describe your thoughts on those deep cuts, but I applaud you. The Cure have always hit my emotions when I needed to figure out a way to navigate the paths that lay ahead of me. My emotions and psyche were a lot different as a 13 year old in 1968 as opposed to the Cure talking to you when you were 13. Depressing as the world was tumbling in that year, I turned to the Beatles, Sly, and James Brown to help me try to make since of the world at that time. The year 2020 was 1968 on double steroids. Anyway, the Cure entered my life at age 30 in 1985 as I was graduating college and they stuck an emotional nerve that still drives me today. Btw, I have all those releases and have listened to them with awe and wonderment. They ARE that good. For me Pictures of You just nails Disentigration entire for me. The sweep and the arc of that song floors me everytime. Regret never sounded so lush. Happy New Year from Chicago Jas

Disintegration was one of the most important albums that got me through some difficult times as a teenager. I would listen to it through headphones (on my sony discman!) with all the lights off. It’s hard for me to ever beef with the inclusion of ‘Plainsong’ on any list, but it’s not exactly a hidden gem - it leads off one of the most highly regarded albums ever made, and was used very effectively in Ant-Man (I lost my shit in the theatre when it came on, hearing it that loud just went right through my body)…also, two songs from one record on a 5 song list? My ‘hidden gem’ pick is ‘A Few Hours After This’, b-side to the ‘In Between Days’ 12” single. ‘Staring At The Sea’ is a great singles comp, and a lot of kids’ introduction to The Cure in the mid-80s, but the best version of that was called ‘Standing On A Beach’, and it was cassette only, twice as long and had all the b-sides on the flip, with ‘A Few Hours After This’ coming very near the end. Huge and orchestral, tympani drums rumbling, perfect melancholy lyrical fade at the end…just ideal, even now, almost 40 years after I first heard it. Damn.
