“One of the dangerous things for artists is to get caught in a trap that you need be completely upset and miserable and depressed in order to create art. And it took me a really long time to realize that I didn’t need all that to create art.” -Gerard way

No, but the memory of the pain will always be there. It's still fuelling the work.
@levelfourteen
@levelfourteen 3 года назад
@@Lux-ow5vf It doesn't always have to be. It can depend on the context of the work which way it leads more towards. Plenty of art is happy themed especially in music. I use to only be able to write depressing,sad,melancholy stuff. I was very one dimensional. I used to believe if I'm happy my songwriting would be awful. It's actually the exact opposite. I started taking care of my mental health more and my work has improved. I write more positively. But what really changed was that I could be more nuanced. I could write something to a sad instrumental make it sad but express optimism at the end and vice versa. Which I believe actually leads to the more profound work than the default of being totally miserable/depressed etc. Most art is not made under the sole pretext of suffering but cannot be ruled out entirely in the process. Just like even in sad work their is profound enjoyment mainly for the artist themselves. It leads to a emotional catharsis because of the expression itself. If this doesn't occur you wouldn't do anything artistic or anything at all. Because why even try if theirs nothing to gain from doing.If you can experience this feeling going one way the other opposite must be true as well. Imo combining both aspects is the essences of being human. It's more relatable aswell because as humans were emotionally fickle creatures. Emotions are complex I think of it like combining two different paint colors to make a new one or changing the shade of a color. Within the light there is darkness and both are codependent on each other
@ivoted-5489
@ivoted-5489 3 года назад
@@levelfourteen I love your story. I used to equate happy art with “hokey” art. The truth is that if what you’re creating makes your heart sing, it will come through in the artwork. However, I do think some folks might be surprised to know how dark some “happy” art really is. Keep up your good work; your first creation is you. ✌🏻
@levelfourteen
@levelfourteen 3 года назад
@@ivoted-5489 Ofc I can agree with you on that. Thank you for the kind words. I think both are prevalent in works of art. It just depends on the artist themselves and how the dynamic of it plays out. The idea of sadness being the fuel to good work is missing the bigger picture. Imo the actual biggest factor in good work is genuine expression. Which you pretty much summed up. Another thing I'll say is the only opinion that needs to matter is the artist's thoughts on their work. Art itself is meant to express the feelings of others but more importantly expression of self. Your opinion on your work matters the most.

Art is used as escapism for many, millions of people put words into paper with the purpose of reaching out for a breath of fresh air while constantly drowning in water made of void. I feel that we forget there are also those enamored with the world around them, and they want to share it. So they write poems, and they make paintings, and they play music. Art is the exaggeration of emotion, but it’s easy to forget that positive feelings can be exploited and felt as much as negative ones can.

Then it started to become only drawing when having strong emotions and now it's so hard to even try. I have these "peaks of energy" out of nowhere and it makes me super excited to make things, be happy and plan a lot of unrealistical stuff (but I only seem to notice how it doesn't make sense when it ends). When that happens, sometimes I try to draw again, but it always ends with me crying and feeling more miserable than before. As an artist myself, I do feel some sense of seriousness to the "Tortured Artist" stereotype. My art is usually very emotional, and I feel I create best when I feel passionately. Weather it's about what I'm creating or not, I do my best work when I'm feeling particularly strong emotions. Depression can sometimes be one of those emotions, as backwards as that sounds. When I'm depressed, I usually try to draw things that make me feel happy or at peace. Or if I'm really far down, I create dark and disturbing things. It is not something I need to be able to draw, but passion, weather love or hate, is a particularly strong fuel.
@isaacoshea
@isaacoshea 3 года назад
I experience this too - the quality or my creative output correlates with the intensity of my recent emotional experiences, both good and bad. I think the fact that art can be very emotional by nature means that being depressed, anxious, relieved, joyous, pensive etc. can both fuel and guide the creation process, especially if you're still decently functional. In my case, if I just sit down and make some music because I'm bored or I should, the only thing that comes naturally is to edit and do boring or technical stuff, which is fine for a lot of things (practice, editing music etc.). But when I write or perform, I need to have something to express, or it'll just be technical babble.

I wasn't even sure whether I was true to myself and when. And others obviously started questioning me too. I got to the point where I couldn't write anymore and believed it was gone from me forever. Many mistakes that I made in my writing were pointed at me and I wasn't ready to accept it. So for the half of 2020 I mainly cried and felt petty. Then I started taking antidepressants and go out little by little as I didn't have reason to be sad. I just wanted to be happy. And I did things I usually don't do, took my time for a few months. And now I feel more creative than ever. I realised that misery is just one of the tools no The one. Any strong emotion can lead to thoughtful content. And I wouldn't say that low self-esteem helps in anyway with art. All it does is stop you from practicing it because you feel like you're not good enough. So, if you're an artist and feel the block or like you've passed the "10 creative years", don't wait for another life to come have your new 10 years. Take a shift for a while until you have something to say again.

As an artist with severe depression and bipolar, medication and therapy saved both my life and art. Depression never spawns creativity, it holds it back. Van Gogh's greatest paintings were made after he admitted himself to an institution to get better. Don't get yourselves fooled, please. (Rant warning:) TLDR: Depression is not the answer, its not a tool, its not a necessity, you don't have to put up with it to be good at art. You are just as creative without it, just maybe in a different way. Your state of mind can have an effect on your writing style, the tone, the rhythm of your work, but it doesn't define the quality. You don't have to be sad to be a good writer, you can be just as successful without depression. You deserve to be happy. Its sad that an artist is always(or very very often) thought of as a depressive mess. I'm no professional writer by any mean, but I'm inspired to be one. Started writing back in the last years of primary school. I used to have major depression and even suicidal episodes back in middle school (That was also the time when I wrote the most. I mean bags full of notebooks filled to the brim with different stories, most of them never finished or even thought about again). Those were the most productive days of my writing, probably because I used writing as a mean to escape my life. Who wouldn't to be honest? Every day I was teased for my looks, the way I dressed, the way I talked, the friends I had, I even got teased because I was with someone from another country (that got so bad I ended up breaking all connection with him). I changed schools 2 years in. Now I'm here in university, better but still not in perfect shape, happily engaged (to the same guy I left back in middle school) and I just went trough my old works (yes I kept them all, idk why). They were...different from what I write now. By no means best sellers, I was around 16-17 when I wrote them but I wouldn't say they were bad. They were just different in tone, style, pace and all that. I couldn't really get into that mindset again to replicate those things, I was just simply too happy for it I guess. At first I got a bit sad that I lost this ability of mine to evoke certain styles and feelings trough my work, but then I realized that I don't need to stick to one way of writing. I just needed to get more comfortable with the themes I'm writing in now, more used to the tone, the style and I can have the same level of success. I use writing not as an escape but as a way to express. A way to make myself happy, a way to create unique and fantastical worlds and tell stories. A way to share adventures. All you have to do is keep going, adapt to your new style. Explore new feelings you can work with, expand your horizon and you can achieve the same amount of success.

“The sky cries so I don’t have to.” - Myself, 2010s I grew up as a boy. I learned to hide any sad emotions I had. Crying was off-limits in a sense. My teenage years were spent in a rainy state, both physically and mentally. I knew how to smile for pictures, no matter the emotions held underneath. I became what others wanted me to be. I had dissociated from my sense of self for the good of the group. One rainy day, the occasional drips of water from the sky reminded me of crying. Rain conceals all tears shed in its midst. In a way, the sky cries, too. “Boys don’t cry,” as the saying goes. Well, boys, you don’t need to worry because the sky cries for you. You may rightly ask why I have the name of a girl if I grew up as a boy. Let us be clear. I was raised as a boy because that was the assumption that I was. I even believed it for many years. By the time I thought otherwise, I could not believe my new thoughts on the matter. Why should I think myself a woman when I was so clearly a man? This is the mystery that tore my soul in two. Half my mind knew myself to be a woman inside, but what foolishness this must be. I thought for certain if left alone, this femininity would leave me be. Alas, it did not but only got worse. So, I asked the Great Web, “What is this strange curse?” Transgender? Please no. Not here, not me! I feared the thought that I would ever be a she, but secretly and silently I wished it could really be. Thus, mind and body disagree. “Never mind that possibility.” “You’ll never be seen as she.” “How could it be for thee to be so convoluted?” These and more I told myself. “Don’t believe it, ever conceal it; never let it be known.” So, here we are. No bows with which to wrap the situation in a tidy way. It’s a mess, but an honest one. Thank you for reading.

I might even find myself coming back to this video once every week. I am not that much of a proficient writer, but this definitely gave me the goosebumps given how relatable and close to my heart the whole story sounded. The need to be depressed, sad, anxious, I always felt the need to be so to write well. I always try to find the promoter to be sad, sometimes songs, people, or even make up my own story inside my head by imagining the worst possible case. And I always find people asking me the same question, you are so cheerful and happy all the time, so how are your writings this way. I guess I don't have to answer these questions again, thank God, some of the overthinking work has been reduced due to this video. Thank you so much for this story

Being an artist myself I don't actually know the connection between art and depression but I think that if u r into creative stuff and do creative things then almost always you feel like your work isn't worth much not as much as people think . This is a very common mentality among artists . This is also the root cause of Depression in artists . Another cause is Comparing your work with others . This Video was very informative and the fact that Emilia cared more about her mental health than her work was Refreshing But it is for a fact that you can be happy and creative at the same time . Emilia was into writing more of the dark stuff . That was her specialty . Once her depression was cured her writings changed doesn't necessarily mean it became bad just became different . Imagine Billie eilish suddenly switching to happier stuff . You wouldn't like it right? Well what I wanna say is You can be happy and Creative at the same time Stay Healthy , Stay Safe And most importantly Stay Happy !!

RU-vid started recommending these to me without any context. I skipped the comments and just listened. I thought these, like the others in this channel, were metaphorical takes on mental illnesses and their weight on our life based on scientific researches/thesis. I thought they were real, a call out to others in this state. Today, I finally looked more into the description box and what other people have been saying. I'm actually very spooked. The stories recommended to me shooked me to the core, as I could deeply relate with them. Being isolated, having your friends and family drifting away because they don't understand how vile depression and anxiety are, doing something you love deeply but still lose it to the last ember over the years for reasons that you can't explain. Not being able to find joy in anything, and not being able to relate to others when they talked about their daily lifes because of how dysfunctional you are. Shifting to such a dark, pessimist mindset that even the internet will cast you out. And then you'll find yourself stranded with only your mind, disassociating further and further from the human being you used to be. It was scary, to think these stories would find me and speak to me like that. And I say it like this, because I didn't look for them, they were just appearing more and more on the corner of my screen when I logged-in.

The last question the interviewer asked is what it all boils down to. Honestly, it sucks that there's a tradeoff between being miserable and successful or happy and unsuccessful, but I guess everything comes with a pricetag. When we think about creativity, we must understand that for the most part, our ability to think, ponder and reflect is a result of our consciousness and our advanced sense of awareness. The only thing is, we don't have a choice. Evolution has given humans the ability to wonder and pursue beyond our primitive instincts but our self-awareness comes at the cost of our well-being, but that may not be entirely necessary. At the end of the day, I'd personally prefer to be human and to have the ability to wonder and be awestruck rather than living with limited consciousness and self-awareness. It may be overwhelming at times and seem like a curse, but it also gives you an immense amount of freedom.
@venkatdenduluri816
@venkatdenduluri816 3 года назад
Exactly! When people say they have been cursed with consciousness, I'd be like ffs man, this is literally more freedom than u can ever imagine. The only things holding us down are stupid fuck bull shit stigmatic norms which we put on ourselves without our knowing or our families or society put on us. We're sooo Lucky. The chances of us being here is literally in trillions. Trillions. We should enjoy the very little limited time we have.
@FutureMindset
@FutureMindset 3 года назад
@@venkatdenduluri816 Yeah and the thing is, what people are honestly scared of is the lack of meaning in life, our advanced consciousness has made us realize that there's no real objective purpose to living and that has left people petrified and maybe even suicidal but when you really think about it, what's so wrong with life being meaningless? I mean, why does it matter that there's no reason to live? Why do we even have a desire to chase meaning?
@andrewfrankovic6821
@andrewfrankovic6821 3 года назад
@@FutureMindset I will tell you the meaning of life, and don't smirk. We are here to be HERE. There needs to be a here relative to there, and those that are there, wanting to get here, need a HERE, here, or somewhere. A safe, sustainable, here. People seem unable to literally psychologically link up the idea of spiritual, with imagination, with fictionalization as something existent beyond biology. Visible reality is completely visualized on our side of our eyes, colored in by light particles, that shed no discernible light, interacting with our eyes somewhere in the location of where we THINK our eyes are. We only know what we think, and that thinking can be fictionalized ad nauseam.

I used to pour it on paper and then type it down for my blog, and random people enjoys it. They said my take is "unique" and such. But later for the last few months, I moved in to share a room with one of my friend. I just don't have that much time to feel sad and alone anymore. I feel more stable, I feel loved. But now I can't write as good as I used to be, every work that I do feels plain and meaningless. I feel like I don't really have anything to scream about in my writing, as I already have people to listen to it near me. This really made me think about my life. My earliest childhood memory of creation is that of me drawing little stick character comic strips of sci-fi adventures. In my late teens, I decided I wanted to become a writer. Even won a Writer's Guild award. But after a few submission rejections from Hollywood, and really seeing how the Television system worked, I got disenchanted with the whole affair and went back to college. Upon graduation, I started my own software company, and began creating computer programs (with tongue in cheek documentation) that earned me modest success. In the early 2000s, to distract from the day-to-day anxieties of running my own business, I discovered dance. I got good enough in dance to join a couple of companies, and soon after got the itch to choreograph -- that is, create. This impulse led me to begin creating shows (which I learned sort of as I went along). Now, I am using everything -- my desire to create art, my ability to learn new systems and technology, my passion for dance -- to create online dance shows. I have no idea how successful at this I will be, but I can tell you that today I am the happiest I have ever been in my life. I don't need pain and suffering to create art because the simple ability to create art brings me joy.

@@Lux-ow5vf I think it truly depends on what we are aiming at in life. Personally, I've made the decision to stop trying to pursue art as a career but instead keep it as a hobby/mental outlet for whenever I feel like I want to express myself. Given that choice, I would probably trade it for happiness - I believe there are so many things to experience and to perceive in this world, that can both enrichen our life experience whilst simultaneously sparking new inspiration, that it would be all too sad to miss out on it because I'm sacrificing it on the decision to continue living a cursed life of perpetual emotional suffering and emptiness. Then again, I believe this "curse" is rooted so deep within us creatives that I can hardly imagine it being gone, which leads me to the conclusion: whether we want to get rid of it or not - a healthy balance of both happiness and suffering would probably be the ideal medium for a creator that wishes to enjoy life but also dive into creative realms once in a while:)

The pleasant state of mind is very important for me than my art. As a “life” we are here to experience. So when you are in sorrow then go deep into it, feel it completely just so that when you experience joy, you can experience it to the fullest. We tend to be half happy and half sad. When we are sad, we question why we are sad and when will we become joyful. The habit continues and when you are happy subconsciously you want to be sad and feel like something is missing because we never go to the depth of life. Being satisfied, coming to peace with all your doubts and insecurities takes work. We feel comfort in our sadness and sense of familiarity. Sadness is our excuse to not work on being happy. We are lazy and are getting lazy everyday with growing use of “do what makes you happy”. When happiness is just a part of life and conditioned us to thinking “I am happy when I do this activity and rest of the world cannot bring me the peace I need” which is in turn a disrespect to life that you are given as a human being. You’re potential is more than your art. Art is your reflection, if you are a true artist, you are depressed - your art Expresss sadness. Just saying it better be something you don’t feel ashamed and regret when you go down the memory lane and be like “ I could have been in state of joy and expressed it.” There’s already darkness in the perception of the world your art would have not gain that much traction but atleast the message is out to people whom you can impact in a positive way. Even an ant’s efforts matters, you are human. When you’ll reach to the dead end of your life, you’ll only wish I could have just pushed through my sad routine and atleast could’ve tried. -Devrath
