You need to start marking stuff using an ultraviolet pen. I know someone who repaired one of these, and someone swapped the entire board out and tried to say it's still not working, until my friend told them it was all marked with a UV pen.

Had a customer say a ps3 slim wouldn't read games 3 weeks after I installed a new optical drive. Found a guitar pick inside the drive. What kills me is how people buy an expensive game console and just beat them up. I've watched many repair videos, you can see scratches and damage all around the HDMI port like they drag the cable all over trying to force it in, you know they crank the cable side to side to unplug it too. It keeps you in business but makes you wonder why they don't take care of stuff.

I've had several customers come back at me 2 or 3 YEARS later saying their device isn't working and that we were the last people to work on it. EVERY SINGLE TIME The problem they are having isn't even related to the problem we fixed. We fixed a USB-C port. Customer (and I used that term quite loosely) brings the device back 2 years later and it's OBVIOUS it has been dropped or has water damage. Then when I refuse the fix, they post a bad Yelp review. Well, reviews go two ways. I post the customers' names, what the problem was when they first brought the item in, and what the problem is when the 'customers' brought the item in 2 years later. There is bad service AND there are bad customers. Good one on you for refusal.

I think your spot on with our thought process, the first fault being a hdd problem is not the same as a knackered hdmi slot, which poss could have been done by putting the cable under tension hence pulling the socket apart or the hdmi cable being pulled out sideways or roughly.

I had only one customer come back to me 2 months after I replaced their PS5 HDMI Cable, port was completely destroyed. I offered to fix a PC for free. It ended up costing quite a lot of money in the end. So before i bought the parts i told the guy and he called me a scammer and said i should do it for free like i said i would. I told him it looked like a dodgy RAM module and i had several lying around so was going to use that. It was actually the motherboard which meant new board, new CPU, new RAM etc, as it was quite old. He kept on how i was trying to scam him so i gave it him back and told him to try elsewhere as i was a "scammer" He came back a week later after trying 3 other places and said they were all trying to scam him as well but i was only scamming him a little. Needless to say he didn't get it fixed. Some people man.
@arnolduk123
@arnolduk123 Год назад
So you told the customer that it was the RAM at fault and offered to repair it for free. The customer trusted you and your advise as you were the professional that knew about fixing PC's. Turned out you were wrong and you really did not have a clue what the fault was and then told the customer it was going to cost them alot more and a replacement board. I'm not surprised the customer thought you were a scammer. Sorry, but the fault was entirely yours. A more professional approach would have been to offer to diagnose the fault for free and then provide the cost to repair it. But you provided the cost to repair it first and that was for free, nice gesture, but without knowing the exact fault, quite a silly and costly mistake.

Thank you for your videos that you do. Very informative and you have considerable amount of skill & knowledge. I would trust any and all my consoles to you as I know they'd be in good hands. I feel you are correct in your statement and would charge the customer again. Your video on the repair you did serves as proof as you diagnosed the original problem, and resolved it. You don't even have to supply the video, just respond with the link to the repair video and he/she can see for themselves that you fixed it the first time and shouldn't have to eat the cost for time & parts of yet another repair of the same issue. Hopefully when you explain it to the individual that you did the repair for they understand the reasoning behind why a warranty repair is not possible. Either way, keep up with this channel as I love the content and look forward to more of it.

If the underlying cause is a different issue, its a very straightforward reject. 5 mins in and it looks like the HDMI cable was ripped out by pulling it up from the case and damaging the port. BTW, glad to see the extensive use of leaded solder - the solder glue crap we see now in electronic products is the major cause of failure where they run hot and shatter causing dry joints (hello PS3 etc!)

I’ve never been a fan of the fit & finish of HDMI ports. IMO they’re poorly engineered having absolutely zero structural integrity around them which makes them the weak point when compared to robust HDMI cables that protrude too far out from the console and the slightest bump can cause failure. You’re a trustworthy and wonderful lad. Keep up the great work and videos!

As a repair shop owner myself I've had to learn the hard way just how shady some people can be. I now go through the lengths of marking any parts I replace and noting the serial numbers of the console, etc. I've had people send me a completely different console claiming warranty and numerous other little things they try to pull. Most people are great and are genuinely happy but there's always those few that will try to take advantage and they don't seem to realize that not only are we very good at repair, but because we see it all we're extremely adept at figuring out how things were damaged and don't work.

Drawing the line or saying No, is not always the desired outcome. Some times it is necessary. I agree with how u handle this and still tried to look after the customer, i would have done the same, i may have charged for an encoder too though as u can clearly see both was at fault but as a returning customer u can let these things slide at least once. Only suggestion i would give is to make sure u document more on what u do on their consoles etc... even if its little things. It just covers ur arse even more, plus u dont have to ever think back on work regardless if its out of warranty that u may have done previously. I mean what if this console had those repairs done in the past and u had no way of knowing it was ur work? Or they kick up a stink after finding out they have to cop the repairs costs? Ive had people try swap out entire mother boards etc.. to try claim for warranties, Not often mind u but it does happen.

I would like to say good on you for 3 months warranty but I think it's to long, I myself only offered 1 month as i found if something was to go it would have done with in that time span. I would also like to say I to had people doing the same thing eg braking the same part again. I would tell my customers that if the same part (eg ports) was clearly damaged again that it was not covered by the warranty. I only do repairs now for friends or family now as I can no longer afford the time to do it. I do miss it a lot as I enjoyed the challenge as I can see you do trying to fix things 👍👍👍

It amazes me how people manage to damage ports like that these days. Totally understand it 30 years ago when you had a console sitting in the middle of the floor between the tv and sofa, with leads stretching between the two. But with modern consoles and wireless controllers, I cannot understand how they get broken so often. I have an original xbox sitting in the cabinet under my tv, a 360 sitting on the floor beside the tv, and a xbox one s sitting on the shelf right next to the tv. They never have to be moved. The only ports i have ever had to repair on any of the consoles I have owned were the joypad ports on my old Megadrive, and even then it was just cracked solder joints on those old style 'D' connector ports. Still, when your in the repair business long may they carry on breaking ports!

I used to sell computers when CRTs were common. I had moved to a different branch of the store and a guy came in with his monitor complaining it was broken and he wanted it replaced and a new warranty for his whole system. I took it to the techs and they said he had returned several components for warranty replacement and extension in the past. Sure enough the CRT displayed gibberish. I twisted the horizontal control about 10 turns and it was fine. So I asked the guy if he had little kids in his house who might have done it. He turned red, said 'no' and left the store never to return (yay!)

so knowing this customer didn't follow initial recommendations relating to the HDMI lead, what if they continue and dont change their lead this time around and it comes back a third time, this time with the same issues with the HDMI port or encoder because of their doing, technically if it comes back within 3 months would you have to do it under warranty or can you prove its customer fault and charge again?

get yourself some void stickers and bang them on your parts you replace, or maybe some UV pen type so you can mark parts.

I have had many xboxes with a hdmi port like that one. It always worked properly. You should have tried changing the retimer first and test. However the port tells the story that the Xbox is moved alot which can be harmful for the retimer if the user connects the hdmi cable while tv or xbox is powered on. Thats the reason i dont give warranty on these chips.

Was the bootanimation re-added to the drive when it was replaced? Might be the reason for the long delay!

I think that's what's happened I think the xbox would have worked with the hdmi port like that. If he tried it first and waited 40 seconds for it to come on because no green boot screen. I think that's why the customer as wobbled the hdmi cable thinking why won't it work after its been repaired all because of no boot screen

I do, but I only keep them for 3 months. Customer info shouldn't be stored longer than absolutely necessary to provide the service required. Storing data for longer not only clogs up databases but also puts personal data at risk of breaches, so I delete data after 3 months

The owner doesn't know that his cable has a push tab to disengage the connector in order to pull it out. And he just pulls it out directly, thus the locking pins force the metal shroud of the port splitting it apart.
@ProffAndy
@ProffAndy 2 года назад
I've never seen a HDMI plug with any push tab. HDMI plugs are designed to be simply pushed into the socket and pulled out to be removed. Obviously only gentle force should be applied and alignment should be checked when plugging in. Damaged to HDMI sockets usually happens if a plug is incorrectly aligned and force is used, or a plug is removed by yanking the lead, or even in someone trips over a lead.

what about the solder on the hdmi input pin? on the underside of the board, you could see that the top right pin on the screen wasnt soldered.
@TheCod3r
@TheCod3r 2 года назад
It was soldered, it's normal for that specific pin to not meet up with the other pins. I'm not sure why, but that leg is smaller so all you can really do is flood it with solder

We have regional accents here, someone born 2 streets away can have a different accent 😂 mine is West Midlands, or rather "Yam Yam". The reason it's called Yam Yam is because we say the word "Yam" instead of "you are". Well, most people around here do, I don't like saying it 😂

When offering warranty if you are specific on what is covered then it should not be an issue. But for the low cost and simple procedure of replacing a port connector and to keep a customer happy, considering they have paid for a repair recently, I'd replace it under the warranty. Repeat business is worth gold and having satisfied customers is what keeps you in business at the end of the day. There is nothing to stop you charging for new replacement parts though. By the sounds of it, this customer could be quite a regular punter, they seem to have a good knack of breaking things 🤑

I would say dealing with warranty repair is something everyone in the repair world faces, and sometimes you have to stand your ground and refuse a warranty repair is you have valid reason such as it's a different unrelated fault or the customer has damaged it.

@TheCod3r
@TheCod3r Год назад
I do see all comments, just don't get time sometimes to reply to them lol. Personally I use 400⁰C on the soldering iron and don't normally change it at all. Sometimes I do need to go hotter if it's a large area but for the most part 400⁰C is fine. My go to tips are a knife tip (not sure on size) or a B15 bevel tip. Back onto the temps, the hotter you go, the more you'll burn the flux, so generally it's a good idea to find the minimum temperature needed for the specific board and go with that to prevent cold joints :)

I live in the Caribbean and sell/repair phones for a living. I sold a guy a used phone and told him he has 2 weeks warranty and within that time he could return it for a refund or exchange it for a different device , 6 months later he calls and ask for a refund because the battery won't hold a charge, so I offered to order him a new battery and pay the shipping cost and he'd pay the cost of the battery, which would have been USD $10 but he refused and demanded a full refund. I explained to him why I can't do that but he started insulting me so I just ended it right there.
