yes! It speaks to a time when people didn't throw away a damaged thing, or relationship. We use to fix the broken, correct mistakes, maintained them regularly, and they lasted for decade after decade. Homes, furniture, and marriages - still beautiful at a ripe age! That's happiness. One Love Y'all!

Another great restoration show to watch. Thanks, and you have many more years to practice your craft. What remains a mystery is why people did such a through job of messing the piece up in the first place? A lot of effort went into those crappy paint jobs.

Work like this IS an art. People don't appreciate the patience and attention to detail it takes. Bless you for keeping this artistry alive. I've tried restoring some old pieces and I have fail miserably. I just don't have the temperament for doing this kind of work. Ask me tear a house down and frame up a new one, and I'm your man but please don't ask me to do detailed work. lol Thanks for the great video. I enjoyed it.

Excellent work. My only concern when I saw this video was the lack of protection on your hands when you were stripping the piece and no mask when you were spray painting it. I know when one is so young one believes they are invulnerable: I thought so too when I used to work with the insane chemicals involved in printmaking and photography. Just be aware that your skin absorbs these chemicals and that your lungs are breathing them in.

When I was in my teens in the 60's, I refinished a dining room table and chairs for my parents ( it was an unfinished set, could not afford a finished set at the time). One table, 4 leaves, and 6 Duxbury chairs (with all those spindles!) But when I was sanding between coats of stain and semi gloss finish (used Minwax Early American)I liked to put a nylon stocking over my hand, close my eyes, and run my hand over the area to see if it was nice and smooth!! Found every little burr and was able to get it glass smooth!! It turned out beautiful and everyone thought they bought it already finished!! Used it many years, then I used it and then sold it to a friend years later! I loved doing it! Your work is very meticulous and glad to see natural wood rather than painted wood! If wood was meant to be painted, in my opinion, God would have them growing in colors in nature!! God Bless you and your work!

"glad to see natural wood rather than painted wood!" Stained wood is the same as painted wood in my opinion, just used a thinner paint that permeates and changes the original colour therefore is not "Natural".

I compliment you on this restoration. My mother and father bought this same secretary in 1950 and it was new. They did not get the top piece. The felts were green, the metal bracket to pull out the end supports were not plain. The were coated with a stain that made them blend with the interior. It had the same drawer pulls, and they loved it.They were farmers and this item provided all their storage of financial records. The color finish was more red and was labeled "cherry mahogany". This restoration brought back many wonderful memories, Thank You, Ron

The most heinous act anyone can do with antique woodworking is paint it. Those carpenters, woodworkers, woodcarvers had it all "lined up" just right to make the grain tell a story without words while making the medium of their artistic expression benefit as best as possible with what they had to use as a canvas to last for others to enjoy and use. Good job Ma'am.

Then there is us, who have bit insane look in our eyes when we see wooden table/cabinet/bench for sale for 20-30€. "Unfortunately" I live in area (my country) that is known for its woodwork and carpenters and people still are fond of that type of furniture so I have to make my finds when I am some place else (do you know how hard it's bring new furniture pieces at home without your husband noticing?) My heart was crying when we were emptying relative's apartment in other side of the country and I could not fit this old birch dresser in my car (because it already had chair from 50s and other stuff). It was eventually donated to shelter and they give it it someone who is either young parent moving to first apt (young parents who may struggle with young family) or someone who has escaped abusive relationship and is starting over ((because often they cannot take anything with them, they won't even have money)

I can say this, however: At one point when you were using the heat gun and scraper to remove layers of paint, I felt a sense of relief and freedom, like being able to breathe again after being smothered nearly to death for years, and it occurred to me that it was not unlike the feeling of being released from the prison of an abusive relationship. At the same time, watching you scrape off the layers of paint, I'm suddenly having horrid flashbacks to the front door of my old shop. The door was originally on an old store (if I remember right) and had about 38 coats of paint caked on it. One day I decided to freshen it up, and wound up making a couple of steel scrapers and using them with a welding torch to get through all that paint. (Yes I did linger over a few places and got the door warmer than intended, but we got it repainted, and after all it was the door to a welding shop, not a showpiece.)

I really love the work you did on this piece. It was so meticulous. I noticed that you wore gloves to protect your hands from the chemicals but you did not wear a mask or eye protection when you were using the heat gun or the stripper or the spray gun. Your face was so close to all those chemicals off-gassing into the sensitive tissues of your eyes, mouth and lungs and it is so important to educate your viewers in proper protection. I have ended up with corneal ulcers due to incorrect eye protection when renovating furniture and have ended up in bed for days due to a severe reaction to the off-gassing from the chemicals from the heat gun in spite of wearing a mask. Please educate your viewers🙏👍😷😷

I think I have nearly the exact desk. I’ve heard it called a Governor Winthrop secretary. Mine has secret compartments on the inside and has its original finish and hardware. No maker marks. It has only had one owner until I acquired it. The lattice work is on the outside, which leads me to believe it might be a reproduction. You did an amazing job on this piece. Your attention to detail, right down to the orientation of the screws, is astounding. I would have cried too!

The lattice originally is on the outside as it is a succession of the lead strips holding little panes of glass together. However, I like the notion to restore it to the inside for better cleaning purposes. Absolute fantastic attention to details, Trena! (My slotted screws always are aligned with the wood grain...) A small comment on the antique status: materials and hardware especially the lock and the float glass, would not classify this piece as an antique. Laminated panels only became a house hold item in the mid 50ties unless for the US, that is considered antique. I am saying this looking at my chest with black forged ironed hardware with a burn stamp from 1642...

@@thirdopinion8708 In the US, anything from prior to 1980 is considered an 'antique,' at this point... even people.

Well I take my hat off to you good lady you have done it again You had your hands full with this one l love the detail on the top then I saw them glass doors and I was thinking you have got a job there with all the individual panels of glass as l have repair China cabinets and grand father clock fronts before but no it was one panel thank goodness for that l am glad you left the Patina on the draw handels and the ball and claw feet very nice and yes I did notice you had all your screws the same way l like to do that when you put the hard wear on and the colour was just right well done 👍 👏👏👏👏 thank you for your video stay safe

Before production lines and mass production, there was craftmanship - one person working on one project at a time contributing endless hours to detail, accuracy, and authenticity. It is a unique experience to see it still exists. It is wonderful to see its practice before I pass.
