Naruto should have been written to have the Pain Arc as its conclusion. He’s the show’s best villain, with the right amount of power to be a final boss, justifiable motivations, and is the only villain who is directly contrasted with the main character. Pain and the Akatsuki are also just monumentally cool.

My goodness...the weight...the emotion...the heaviness...it's been 7 years since I watched all of Naruto and Shippuden....I think it's even better watching it the second time... I'll never forget watching asumas death and this playing....

Pain was the best villain in Naruto. Obito, Madara, Kaguya and all the others after him were very cartoonish villains with forced reasons to be part of the plot. Pain had it all: a good backstory, a reasonable reason to be corrupt, a philosophy, a plan. Naruto could have ended after the defeat of Pain and it would be still a hell of an anime to be remembered as one of the bests in our times.

It's only after i've grown up and experienced the day-to-day unbridled hate and suffering people cause each other on a regular basis, over trivial matters, that I have fully begun to appreciate Nagato's despair and view, with this track bringing me to tears in my late twenties after hearing it for the first time in almost a decade. But, he is absolutely right, those who do not understand true pain can never understand true peace, and I believe that the suffering inflicted on us will one day teach us to appreciate the peace that we strive for and earn.

Sooo a little fan fic. Nagato Battles Jiraiya Sensei but he is instead critically wounded by pain but lives this time. Naruto is trained to be a Sage but this time to a lesser effect. hes still motivated thought cause while alive Jiraiya will never fight again. But he hears of the prophecy and asks Jiraiya about it during a break and thinks on it. Being alive to talk to Jiraiya tells him everything he can. Naruto realizes he needs to train hard to battle this Nagato. Nagato fights the leaf village and people are killed but to much lesser extent as he kills only a few people. Before he Destroys the village Naruto appears this time. They battle each other and Naruto does well thanks to the frogs but he loses like he does in Canon when Pain stops messing around. Not being exhausted this time pain Defeats Naruto more easily and does the same Cycle of hatred speech to him and Naruto loses it like before but has less reason to fully hate pain. Hinata try's to help him like cannon and losses pretty badly not breaking as many this time. Naruto Rages and injures him self breaking free cause he thinks Pain killed her. But this time Naruto Loses to Pain even in Bejuu form but its a great battle and pain admits to him he never been pushed so hard. During the battle Naruto regains his control over the 9 tails thanks to his dad and he says the same thing to him as in cannon that Pain is not the true Villain. Naruto regains his scenes and finds him self being dragged by pain. He Pleads with pain his vision is wrong and that it is not what is suppose to happen and brings up the prophecy and asks what happen to him to make him be this way. So pain tells him seeing no harm in it. Afterwords Naruto tell him he truely belives they both are mean't to find the answer and tells More about the book Jiraiya wrote and what the old frog said. We can make the great change. Nagato however see his vision as the change and does not see the point of listening to a defeated enemy. So naruto tells him about the Villian behind everything telling him hes being tricked by someone else into this. This causes pain pause being smarter then Naruto he starts wondering. So Naruto offers him his allegiance in searching for a Real answer to true peace that does not involve more needless death. Pain laugh's at his offer at first but admits with more training Naruto would be a very strong ally indeed. So he accepts. He changes his plans and mind and causing a NEW story to unfold that changes the whole ending of Naruto Shippuden. A story where Nagato and Naruto team up and change the world creating a big change. That isent sunshine and rainbows that BORato is. But a more realistic answer. Only real way to create True peace is destroy the leader ship of all the nations and replace them with people Loyal to you. Sure people will fight and suffer but to much a less degree now and people can heal. there will still be fights and battles but All nations agree that all out war is not a good idea or the "two" will take them out. Its not a perfect world but it never was. People get to live and achieve things thought life continues. But for the two who set out on this journey their long watch is only begun because they know who the real enemy is now and to watch out for that enemy.
