The Dúnedain Rangers of Middle-earth were two groups of people from Arnor and Gondor who held sacred their lands and history, and protected such things against the evils of Sauron and his servants. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about the Dúnedain Rangers in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

I loved that paragraph so much, it was almost tear jerking and shows why the Dunedain were just better Men. They had lost their lands and their Kingdom yet they continued to be good people and selflessly protect others from evil because there was no one else left to do so.

What I especially love about the Rangers was that the whole time they've been patrolling the borders of the Shire without the Hobbits even knowing. Although the Kingdom of Arnor has long since fallen, the Men of the West never forgot their duties to protect those who couldn't protect themselves.

It is a cool story! Have you ever played the LOTR War in the North video game? You can visit Sarn Ford in that game which is actually where the picture is from that is shown when he mentions Sarn Ford. Loved visiting that place! You get to meet Halbarad and you could see two Hobbit holes across the stream. And the music used for that location is great in my opinion. If you are curious I did a video just showing the place. It's not the greatest quality by any means but here is the link. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-99LMz3ISlpQ.html

My favorite scene from "Fellowship" film (at least in the top 3) is Aragorn's introduction at the Prancing Pony: his face hidden by his hood lights up briefly when he draws on his pipe, with Howard Shore overlaying the score with a tiny hint of the Gondor theme. Goosebumps.

I was disappointed we never got to see Aragorn's kinsmen come from the North with the Elendil's House Banner in the film version of ROTK, but I do understand they couldn't depict everything in the books. Still, I think they missed what would have been a great cinematic moment with the unfurling of the Banner before the walls of Minas Tirith. We do see it at the movie version of Aragorn's coronation. If I remember correctly Arwen is carrying it. JAMES

Elegost: I'm getting bored of sitting here at Sarn Ford; can I go hunt wargs? Eradan: Home nothing; I still need to patrol the Coldfells and Mount Gundabad! Amdir: Pass the athelas potion -- I've got a stabbing pain in my chest. Calenglad: Did I ever tell you I fell in love with the spirit guardian of Evendim? Halbarad: SHUT UP GUYS OR I'LL RENDER YOU ALL NON-CANON Sorry; I couldn't resist. Seriously though; the Rangers of the North are some of the most intriguing people in Tolkien's lore. Even when their realm ceased to exist, they persisted -- they turned into the unseen guardians of Eriador, a mission they maintained for more than 1000 years. And then they helped form a new Arnor after the War of the Ring.

Its pretty telling just how effective these 30 Rangers were who journeyed from Helm's Deep to Pellenor and on to the Black Gate. They're gone for only a little while and in their absence the Shire gets sacked. How many times would it have been destroyed over the centuries without them? I've notices something very subtle in the movie, something that was slightly referenced in the appendices. Aragorn's accent keeps changing depending on where he is. I think the appendices referred to his vast knowledge of local dialects and how he has been to many lands and learned their customs. He blends in. In Bree he sounds Cornish. In Rivendell he sounds Elvish. As he gets closer to Minas Tirith he starts to sound like Numenorean Men (Viggo' s own speech patterns which only appear earlier in the movies when he's alone with Arwen). It's subtle but it's there and would make a nice piece for you to do on this magnificent channel. He does this either out of respect for others, or as a way of hiding his lineage. You decide.

And of course he knows Shire dialect, where even in the Great families, while there is still a trace of the old formal speech, it is still mostly in the familiar. That's why people were so shocked by the way Pippin talked. He's the son of the Thain, literally the "Prince" of the Shire, yet he still talks in the familiar, not the formal dialect, EVEN TO DENETHOR.

I felt sadly that Peter Jaksson lacked a deeper knowledge of the books or didnt have time enough to get it on film...some say "yes it movies this had to be done"...but realy had it? what do we know about that...they could have been done into more deep and magical movies in a slower pace and so on...and they might have been loved as much....this is Peter Jaksson version...and well there are more things about them that i dislike than like, sadly enough.

In a way, Dunedain remind me of Veterans that come back from combat, in both how they act, and are treated by others. Some bits of information from the books that give insight about how important the Rangers were: Aragorn says in the Council of Elrond "Peace and Freedom, you say? The North would have known them little but for us. Fear would have destroyed them. But when dark things come from the houseless hills, or creep from sunless woods, they fly from us." We can then assume that there were many dangers in the wild North, and that it wouldn't have taken much time for them to overrun the towns and settlements if the Rangers hadn't been there. "'Strider' I am to one fat man who lives within a day's march of foes that would freeze his heart, or lay his little town in ruin, if he were not guarded ceaselessly." As to what the Rangers guarded against, we can safely assume Orcs, Wargs, Trolls, and Barrow Wights. They also worked South, so probably they guarded against raiders and bandits from Dunland. We also know they went North, perhaps to guard against remnants from the Witch King's forces from ages past. Best and birds from sunless woods, and spies more evil than they are...

Tolkien will be the eternal optimist, but many of his readers have become more cynical. The general populace has lost faith in many local and world leaders. They believe they regularly act in their own self interest (wherever you land on the political spectrum) rather than benefit the common good and refuse to change their ways. It seems that, like ASOIAF teaches, the worse you are, the better you do in society. And as much as I’d love to disagree with that, I think it’s on to something.
@nealsterling8151
@nealsterling8151 4 года назад
@NihlusGreen Indeed. Good Star Trek (TOS and TNG) has always been about hope, optimism and about building a world, in which somone would actually want to live in. But Modern producers seem to completely missunderstand this message and make series with bad and uninspired writing and pointless action. That's why i fear the worst for the upcoming LotR series. The makers seem to have deliberately chosen one of the most miserable eras in tolkiens work. I fear they just want to have a opportunity to show violence and miserable people. It all seems to me they just want to jump on the GoT train. I'll be extremely cautious about that series.

When the night is the darkest, the sea the most tumultuous and hope a distant memory, to persevere and fight for a better future is even more noble. Hasan Wilson Actually only Elros Elrond's brother and Aragorn's ancestor lived to be 500 years old. During the third age that line decreased in numbers and the lifespan of the Dunedain got shorter as they mingled with peoples of lesser lineage. That did include though people of non royal Numenorean descent. So by the time of Aragorn, while having a lifespan double the amount of Men of non Numenorean blood, it was still less then his ancestors had. For example Elendil and Isildur.

The Dunedain, the Rangers of the North Kept safe the lands from wolves and Orc Sword, lance, and bows they use So they can give the evil creators their just dues Lead by their chieftains for over a thousand years They were mistrusted with harsh slurs and jeers The men of Bree did not like these folk Yet they would listen intently whenever they spoke Out in the wild their impact was great Never once though were their hearts filled with hate By keeping the peace they would carry like a dove For it was the people of all lands that they truly love One day they believed their chieftain would again be king And it would only happen after the destruction of the one ring. The Rangers of the South, led by Faramir they were To the forces of Saruron, trouble they would stir Ambushes, traps, and raids they would make For it was their very homeland its existence was at stake Easterings and Oliphants whose blood they would rightly spill A massive amount of fear in their enemies they did instill While their brothers in the North fought in the wild Cities, ruins, and plains bodies of their enemies there they piled No matter the challenge that was set before them They would see the mission though even if hope was very dim Frodo, Sam, and even Golum they would set free For they realized true hope laid with those three It was not the flag of Gondor who they marched and fought for For they wished to see the united kingdoms of Anror and Gondor!

The respect and admiration Peter Jackson had for Tolkien's work is evident in the movies and how he wanted everything authentic as humanly possible. He brought Tolkien's world and vision to life and I love him for it!

@codeysnow2980 4 года назад
@@timothybessemer7316 you can't expect for the movie to match the book in every single aspect when it's two different people. Jackson is going to do some small things that doesn't affect the major plot and storylines because it's his chance to put his own spin on things. Also, that arc is more interesting for a film. I didn't like it that much either but I respect how he ended his character in the film. These films are an adaptation of Tolkien's original work. Not a copycat. So many people don't take in to account the thought and energy that Peter and his crew put into costumes, dialects and languages, always staying on the main plot with only a few branches of personal creativity from a guy who deserves to have his own twists on things because of how much thought he put into these films

This is the best quote about the Dunedain of the North: "`Peace and freedom, do you say? The North would have known them little but for us. Fear would have destroyed them. But when dark things come from the houseless hills, or creep from sunless woods, they fly from us. What roads would any dare to tread, what safety would there be in quiet lands, or in the homes of simple men at night, if the Dúnedain were asleep, or were all gone into the grave? `And yet less thanks have we than you. Travellers scowl at us, and countrymen give us scornful names. "Strider" I am to one fat man who lives within a day's march of foes that would freeze his heart or lay his little town in ruin, if he were not guarded ceaselessly. Yet we would not have it otherwise. If simple folk are free from care and fear, simple they will be, and we must be secret to keep them so. That has been the task of my kindred, while the years have lengthened and the grass has grown"

Lord Elrond says, ''That is so. We must gather the Du'nedain, the Rangers of Eriador. You must do this, Ederthedir.'' Lord Elrond says, ''You know the roads and paths of Eriador, Ederthedir. You must bring this news to the Rangers.'' Lord Elrond says, ''The Rangers will uphold their oath. They will become the Grey Company, and ride to the aid of their chief.'' Saeradan says, "I see, Ederthedir. I will travel south with as many of the Du'nedain as can be gathered in haste. Aragorn has need of us, and that is all that we need to know." Calenglad says, ''Ederthedir is a friend of Aragorn, my chieftain, charged with mustering the Du'nedain that they may aid him.'' Gwindeth says, ''What dangers can have befallen the son of Arathorn that such help is necessary?'' Gwindeth says, ''Has the time come at last for the king to assume his throne?'' Calenglad says, ''That is why we have come!'' Gwindeth says, ''But if through your actions Aragorn takes his throne, a kingdom shall return that should never have ended.'' Corunir says, ''The Du'nedain are gathering. We must ride to the aid of our lord Aragorn. We need you, Golodir.'' Golodir says, ''So the time has come at last.'' Halbarad says, ''We have come to the crossroads, Ederthedir, and sooner than I expected. I want to help the Prince of Rohan (...) But we cannot abandon our journey; our duty lies with Aragorn, and we must find him in Rohan or die searching.'' Aragorn says, ''Now is the time when we show them the resolve of Man. Dawn is nearly here.'' -LOTRO

So many comments talking about their military as they are equivalents of this fictional "all what we could hope a military will be" characters "The Dúnedain Rangers of Middle-earth". No military force is like them because they came for a wish of what men can also be, unfortunately in reality things are very different and no army regardless of his leadership behave in war like this. Because war brings the deepest on humans emotions and we all feel too much; then rape, executions, torture, slavery (sexual/work exploitation - human trafficking), child recruitment, etc. are the tone of our real world. That's why I love this characters because there has been people that inspired it and keep trying to be the best they can even in the worst conditions and surrounded by companions that are worst than the people they fight.

It's one of my favorite parts. Especially when the Gaffer shows up, criticizes Sam. Frodo says that Sam has been great and is famous around the world: "It takes a lot o' believing," said the Gaffer,"though I can see he's been mixing in strange company." It was wonderful to see the old hobbit, impatient with talk of saving the world from a legendary powerful evil, bluntly saying "they dug up my tatters." Tolkien said that he saw Sam as the hero of LOTR...and even he couldn't convince the Gaffer that Sam is a hero.

"...as are all who love Tolkien's works" you hit the nail on the head. I can't help but notice that while discussions about Tolkien's work occur, these are usually mature discussions. People are open to others points of view and treat each other with respect. Compare that to, say, Star Wars, where people bitch if you don't like the movie that's someone else's favourite.

I always assumed the Gray Company was a pre selected bodyguard for Aragorn. He called them that from the start, so it was already their name. This seems to imply that they were an already existing as a unit. I always assumed that there were at least several thousand rangers, as they kept almost all threats away from Bree and the Shire, which is covering thousands of square miles.
@Trigm
@Trigm 2 года назад
But then why would the absence of those 30 cause Bree and the Shire to suffer raids and attacks? Butterbur remarks that Bree had a taste of what it is like without the rangers over that year, and the Shire would not have to be scoured if the rangers were still guarding its borders. 30 men do not make that sort of change out of 3000. 30 out of 100-300 does.
