I love how anti-woke comedy presents itself as “edgy” and “offensive” but then it comes out and is the most bland inoffensive thing you’ve ever seen

It's King of the Hill but they removed everything likeable about Hank Hill.

The stark difference between "Mr Birchum" and "King of the Hill", despite it being the same joke of "Old school conservative dad living in the changing modern day" is the fact that when Hank got upset about something, the joke was "Hank's upset by the changing times". In "Mr Bircham", the joke is "He's upset and you should be too and the thing he's upset about is wrong and should be mocked". Hank is old fashioned and resistant to the changing world and often times confused and frustrated, but rarely angry at it. Meanwhile conservative humor now is "Things that are different are bad and woke and should be made made fun of and hated specifically to own the libs"

Hey! I'm one of the animators and fixers of the show! I thought i can maybe share a little bit of how we made some things about the animation, since you commented on it By the way, i heard some of the advertising saying that this show was proudly made in America, but we, the animation crew, were located in Valencia, Spain. We put some references here and there, like the poster on principal Bortles office that says visit Valencia The show was made using 2D cutout rigs mainly. For those who wonder what that means is that instead of having to draw every single frame we move a 2d model similar of how 3D animation is made. Shows like Rick and Morty also use this, but they have a lot more time and manpower to polish and refine and to make more complicated poses. In fairness, they kind of wanted the characters to look a bit stiff, and not cartoony, so that's the show style But we didn't have time to make rigs for everything, specially por the characters that appear for a gag, so those were hand drawn animated. We had to do it fast so the animation is on 3's or even 4's I personally didn't like the show, and seems to be the main opinion for the crew i talked to. Hard to be passionate about a show that oposes LGBT+ rights when most of the crew is LGBT I would say "hope you like it", but lets be honest, so I'll say thanks for you to endure it

Also, one thing that makes the show even worse but is peak “conservative comedy” Birchum is hated by everyone. All the kids make fun of him, the staff and adults barley respect him (until they side with him from writer contrivance) He’s a jerk to everyone, and is really just a miserable person. And the show sells that as a good thing, and openly celebrates him being an irredeemable POS. Cause conservative comedy thinks being a genuine A-hole and or seen as a horrible person is a good thing, out of cope. To them, that’s the standard of conservative comedy, everything you say is true, all your comedy is just reality, therefore if you’re an a-hole and or hated for being a truth teller, that’s how you know you’re right.

King of The Hill was also more nunced in its politics. They humanized Conservatives and made fun of liberals but there were also episodes where they humanized the liberal view point. There was even an episode when peggy became freinds with a drag queen who was betrayed as a good person. Peggy was even called out for almost dumping the freindship because she was to judgmental after she found out. You can tell this show is never going to have an episode were liberals and progressives are going to be portrayed as anything but horrible, or stupid or both. They also still took shots at conservatives. Hanks dad, who was even further to the right then him, is betrayed as a miserable abusive tyrant. Hank didn't want to be anything like him and we even rooted for him over his father. Also Hank was a likable character. He had his flaws but he also had a good heart, cared about others and strong moral compass. You liked him for being more traditional and conservative. Birchum not so much.

Honestly this show perfectly illustrates why I find most political comedy painfully unfunny. They focus so much on ruffling feathers and pandering to their demographic that they forget to write decent material. No one is laughing at their jokes because they suck ass, not because their fee-fees were hurt. There are women in the show that even... do things... and have jobs of their own.... His wife is a real-estate agent who probably makes a hell of a lot more money than a wood-shop teacher (which is a no-no!) And his daughter wants to cut wood too! (Isn't that a man's job? Shouldn't her dream job be a wife and mother? ) I don't know.... this show is looking pretty "woke"....

I will never understand why most adult animated shows have the most bland, generic, and basic character design ever, I wouldn't even call it basic, it's disgusting, can't wait for DailyWire + to fall off for good, first we had a Bluey ripoff, now we have a 4th Brickleberry clone. Beautiful. And it's depressing too because I know a lot of good adult shows with a very unique art style, Smiling Friends for example, but shows like this get overshadowed with stuff like Brickleberry or whatever, it's depressing.

It’s so funny how they marketed this show as super edgy even though something like smiling friends or even invincible are far more edgy than anything this show does.

King of the Hill works because while the characters might be conservative, at the end of the day they aren't hateful conservatives. They aren't going out of their way to try and "own" anyone, and they push back against bullies on both sides. The characters in King of the Hill aren't judgmental towards others, they are just living their lives and reacting to outside forces that interfere with that. Probably the closest thing we get to an "anti-woke" episode in King of the Hill is the one where the guy wants to make a historically accurate depiction of the Alamo and takes it a bit too far, making Davy Crocket a coward that couldn't wait to surrender. Hank doesn't sit there and complain about pansy liberals (woke wasn't a term at the time), he gets upset because it goes against his Texan pride, but even though he hates it, he still accepts some of the hard lessons, then talks about why he still treasures the history and lets it proceed. We see the characters accept Dale's gay father, Bobby's love for theatre, Bill's need for companionship, Dale's crazy conspiracies, Nancy's unfaithfulness, and more. At the end of the day, King of the Hill works because the main message is to just be a kind and accepting person.

Imagine "King of the Hill". Now imagine everyone being insufferable and annoying. That's this show.

I just love all the self-owning they did. They claimed that for decades, no one would go near the show due to apparently “offending the wrong people” 1. Saying that you signed off on a show nobody wanted for decades is not the own you think it is. 2. I thought the narrative they liked to push was that “snowflakes” were created in 2016 and before that it was anything goes? So if nobody was offended until the 2010s or so, why were the networks scared of offense? I will never get tired of seeing the Wire shoot themselves in the foot over and over again.

King of the Hill works so good because Hank Hill isn’t seen as Cartoon Jesus. Sometimes his beliefs are right and the episode shows why that is instead of just telling you FOLLOW MY BELIEFS and then sometimes Hank Hill is wrong, and the episode shows you why Hank is wrong. It shows a grey area to these sorts of issues in a proper way without shoving it in your face.

So surprisingly, I think this was supposed to be a spinoff of a show called Crank Yankers, a prank call/puppet show, whom the character Birchum comes from. In that show, he was more characterized as a boomer stereotype who complained about his wife and Vietnam

7:20 There's a certain irony that these guys scream that others use media to force their opinions on people, yet the moment they make their own stuff as a rebuttal, they do that just with their own views. You kinda touched on this but also in KOTH it actually examines the views conservative people have fairly reasonably, like Hank isn't a cartoonishly evil dude - he's a good dad and a loving person, he's just stuck in his ways and struggles with change. Like there's a whole episode where his work gets a new manager who starts doing shitty things like raising prices in the winter and tracking the employees fuel use, which enrages Hank. Not because it inconveniences him but because he believes in the more traditional idea of running businesses by treating people with respect, which isn't something that modern companies like doing (arguably they never did but semantics). He's completely shown as in the right too, it's an examination of a topic and not a mouthpiece which is where shows like this fail
