@@ThatsChromaif that's true Great work And of course non disclosure agreement comes first Personally if you are working on them Here's a fun one for you Mind robber, although it would be fun to see this one come to being I'm kinda hoping we could get a dual version One version which shows us the doctor, Jamie, Zoe and the master, the TARDIS too (obviously) in colour while the rest remains part of the written word in b&w barring the carcus who is brightly coloured being a comic book character (and we all know how colourful comics are or were) It shows the elements of what they are Then there would be a full colour edit excluding the white void and robots barring Jamie and Zoe and obviously the doctor

While the actual cut down is... wild, I love that the colours are clearly based on the "We need to sell colour TV's, DAMMIT" era of colour, it's one of my favourite aesthetics from the history of TV
@Redfern42

I've yet to see this colorized version, but seeing the shot of the Daleks' control room with the rich purples, I thought Jerry Finnerman's stage inspired lighting for the original Star Trek series. One almost expects William Shatner in a velour tunic, black flared trousers and boots to step into frame.
@ChickenEater692
@ChickenEater692 2 месяца назад
@@Redfern42 Ironically, Finnerman's lighting is so OTT I tend to watch original Trek with the colour off. His palette really lends itself to amazing contrasts, and the whole thing comes off looking like season one of The Outer Limits - especially eps like Devil in the Dark.

For me, I would choose 'The Enemy of the World' for Troughton as the colour pallette for that would vary from the lush green leaves in Salamander's office to the golden sandy beaches and blue sea of Australia to the browns/reds of the underground bunker. Its probably the most colourful of any 60s story.

I know this probably isn't a popular opinion but I'd love to see An Unearthly Child colorized firstly it's the first episode so it's definitely important to do it eventually second it's one of the shorter stories so there wouldn't need to be as heavy of an edit third can you imagine what color could do for the fire flickering on the cave walls the snow on the ground as they escape hell it could probably even fix the parts where it's so hard to see in the first episode I mean like you can barely even see poor Ian when he's talking to Barbara in the car and you can see even less when they're inside the building looking for Susan color really could do so much for that story.

I did a cutdown of Web Planet a bunch of years back. Got it down to 63 minutes. It's not perfect - some story points are a bit of a mess - but it's a lot more watchable than the original. Still not enormously watchable, but a lot more watchable. 🤣 Fixed the wonky TARDIS landing too.

I showed my partner this version as their first experience of ‘The Daleks’ and while they liked it for the most part, they thought the story still dragged in places. Which I found fascinating and also made me thankful I didn’t think to show them the original story before now. 💀

I wonder if that had more to do with the way it was shot than the story itself, since modern productions tend to have more closeups and quicker cutting. Classic Who isn't exactly famous for terribly dynamic direction either, which is understandable given the tight shooting schedules and the limitations of a multi-camera setup, but can be difficult to adjust to if you're not used to it.

@jason_a_smith_gb

On stories where added new CGI and sound, I like them, but I prefer to see as they were. The odd Dalek laser effect I can live with and maybe some colours chosen or silvers were done to make the b/w film clearer, so maybe the ord colour interpretation is fine, but, I do enjoy the dialogue more as is and close to the original. Edits are not really my thing. However, this was done well and could be half done now, half done later. The War Games would not be as good colourised. The edit would be too much. And wars in b/w is not a bad thing to portray.

No matter the flaws, for me and my sisters the best moment of the entire 60th anniversary will always remain to me when the jazzy heist movie music started playing during the Doctor and companions' escape from the Dalek city, the scene turned into a crazy montage, and Carole Ann Ford's cheeky little wink got a perfect closeup. Yeah, the best way I csn describe the Edit is if you've already seen the story and you want a quick reminder then watch Daleks in Colour, but if you have never seen The Daleks before then watch the original. Cause the new edit kinda leaves things out that is kind of confusing without the context of the original.

Hi Josh, Never mind RTD, I have long since thought that your content is worthy of inclusion on the classic series "collection" bluray box sets. In particular your videos about how lost episodes found their way back to the archives, which are superb. We've only had one 60's bluray box set so far, so I would love to see you given the chance to extend and update your content about the lost stories and have them included on future official releases. Keep these videos coming Josh................ ok, we all know you will never top your greatest video of all !! I love the creative approach to the colours, I love the idea of giving these bespoke edits to make colourisation easier and to avoid any conception of "replacing" or "fixing" the originals, though I think 75 minutes was simply too short for what was originally well over double the length and already packed quite full. The colourisation work was incredible, but the cut felt a little too quick, the flashbacks could get a bit much and the music refusing to stop dragged down the experience for me. The escape from the city was a standout moment of creativity though. In future, I hope they choose much shorter stories, or shoot for a longer runtime in the edit, maybe 90 minutes. The 75 minute format would probably work for 4 parters like Tomb of the Cybermen, but my dream is a 90 minute colour edit of The Seeds of Death. I'd love to see The Dalek Invasion of Earth but I'm not sure how well a cutdown would work, but the Sensorites would be lovely! I'd love the revival to visit the Sense Sphere, and I imagine if they did that, a colourised Sensorites would be a fun tie-in.

Great video, my thoughts were mostly the same as yours, although I wasn’t convinced by the new edit soundtrack which seemed a bit inconsistent at times. I’d like to see the Mind Robber colourised, firstly because I love it, and since there’s very little music it could have a fresh consistent new soundtrack. Or would we get a pink unicorn? It would be easy to cut this down because there are so many set pieces like pieces in a jigsaw. Other than that, the Aztecs has a lot of potential for vibrant colours and it’s such a good story…. Or the Chase which is my all time favourite story and has so much variety. They could just cut out the journey into terror completely hahaha. Hoping they do them all!!! Nice to see you back

My overall thought still remains that they were trying to turn something old into something new and given the source were destined to fall short. The colourisation is ok - but this is one area where license can be taken as the sets and costumes would have been chosen for how they would appear in B&W. So the Dalek city should look metallic - and the control panels not an explosion in a sweetshop. The sound was the most distracting and most obvious 'modernising' choice. I agree with you about the editing choice being largely dictated by the need to cut down the runtime - but gain trying to make a 'slow' 7 part story into a tight 90 is never going to work well esp when the obvious things to cut were left in. That whole trek through the swamp and the caves - could have been cut and covered with one line. You go that way and we rendezvous in 2 days. The seventies omnibus repeats were great at the time but I do recall being confused why bits I remember were missing. As for the next choice - I would be happy with any story - just colour all of it and no overdubs from Ayers and his casiotone.

I genuinely found it to be beautiful. I have a book from when I was a kid (A Book of Monsters, hugely recommend it) that had some colourised set photos and that's how the serial always looked to me in my head. Seeing it in motion on screen, without having to use any imagination as to what it might look like, was magical. The edit was great, in my opinion. Crushing everything down into 75 minutes was an insane task but there was so, so much filler in those old episodes that I can absolutely forgive a little bit of jank in order to make it palletable for modern audiences, not to mention feasible to colourise! It was fun watching it and seeing how the fat was trimmed.

Would like to see a (cut-down) Cybermen serial done one day. TOMB - in colour - would be interesting to see; especially the classic scene with the Cybermen, reviving and leaving their 'tombs', to release their Controller. I wouldn't want to see any PURPLE Cybermen, though, as I've seen in some of the less successful colourisation attempts with '60s Cybermen. Lol.

For me, I always like the idea of a colourisation of Tomb of the Cybermen that made BOLD choices with colour inspired by the Egyptology craze which inspired the story. While it would be ironic to see Cybermen in gold, like the Pharaoh's of old, it would be an interesting way to pay respect to the story's archaeological influences AND give us a cyberman story with a little more colour. Would be a controversial move though

Another great video as always! Wasn't sure about checking out the colorization-some of the color choices did seem a bit too gaudy IMO & more appropriate to Star Trek/late 60's Who vs. early 60's Who and while The Daleks could use some trimming, wasn't sure about a 75-minute cutdown-but you've definitely sold me on it, will have to check out the colorization soon. As for future colorizations, for The Hartnell Era I'd have to go with The Aztecs, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Romans, The Web Planet, The Chase, The Ark and The War Machines; for Troughton's era, I'd have to go with Tomb of The Cybermen, The Ice Warriors, The Enemy Of The World, The Web of Fear, The Mind Robber, The Seeds of Death and The War Games (which could maybe have a two hour edit instead of 75 minutes?)

It'll inevitably be Tomb I imagine. BBC thinking will be: We've done Daleks, so now we need a Cyberman story. If nothing else, because it's easier to market and get regular viewers to tune in. Also has the advantage of being a Troughton, so you can say you've done one for both Doctors. It's also the only fully complete Cyberman story for the B&W era. I think one which would appeal only to actual fans, but would be incredible, and could be edited down quite nicely would be Enemy Of The World. There's an easy 75 minute, three act spy movie in there. And some of the locations are begging for that colour treatment. However, that doesn't have nearly as much a broad appeal as the Cybermen do.

I watched this with my partner who is indifferent to Who and he loved it! We split it into 2 and he was desperate to watch the next bit the following day. I think that says a lot for its intended audience as he'd never have sat down for 7 B&W episodes. The Dalek reveal it think is a highlight as it uses hindsight to reedit something slightly underwhelming into a suspenseful, epic event - which it was never shot to be. Plus, its so pretty too, which definitely helped more than a straight up true to life style.

While I really enjoyed the colourisation, it looked absolutely incredible. I really hated how much it was cutdown. A seven parter into only 75 minutes was far too ambitious. I was constantly being distracted by how the action but from fast paced cutting to the more static uncut sequences as they're two totally different styles. And I just broke down in laughter during the escape montage because I was just expecting it to end and Susan to say "Right, so that's the plan", plus the wink was just very stupid I thought, although good to see you enjoyed it. I think that it would be best for them to do four parters instead as they could be more easily cutdown to the 70-75 minute range without too much being lost and the pacing to be so distractingly inconsistent. I would like to see Edge of Destruction or the Romans colourised though as they could potentially not be cutdown, but obviously I'm still waiting on Invasion of the Dinosaurs 1

I really liked the coloring but I was mixed on the edit and the music. My biggest issue though was some of the cuts introduced continuity issues. I feel like it was a big mistake to cut them discovering and removing the security camera. Without it there's no explanation for how the Daleks knew what they were saying early on but later have no idea they are planning an escape. They literally use the removed security camera as part of their escape but you have no idea where they got it from if you've only watched the colourised version.

Like the idea of the new Dalek dialogue as a way to tie it into this story Dalek mythos. Overall I'm looking forward to this blu-ray. Your review has made me even more enthusiastic. If it weren't for the missing episodes The Invasion would seem an obvious Troughton to get the treatment. As such I'd go with The Mind Robber, especially as like the Invasion the DVD is old and a better restoration is probably possible these days. As for Hartnell the two complete Darek stories seem obvious but I'd sooner see the Aztecs or the Sensorites (a really underrated story that as you say could benefit from tightening the pace and spook factor)

Regarding the edit, I think 90-100 minutes would still fall in the realm of “well, it’s shorter than most movies nowadays” while giving the story more room to breathe.

yeah i think 90min would have been the sweet spot, but thats 20 whole more minutes of colourisation. I doubt the budget would stretch!

I've yet to buy this release so, I can't really say much. But what I will say is this, based on clips. if you're not a fan of Purple, you're not going to be too happy. Do appreciate the hard work that went into it, and will eventually get round to buying it. Also, I LOVE your friend's Mavic Chen shirt!

@@MrJ.Smith1234 I was one of 'those guys' who worked on this - and I can tell you that's definitely not the case. That final shot from Tomb was in the edit right from the start, long before a second colourisation project had even been considered! So as I said, the Daleks montage had no influence either way on the next colourisation

I watched this live with my wife, she found the edit confusing and lost track of what was going on. I had difficulty with the music/soundtrack which firstly was excessive as it seemed to in very scene. And then loud so I had difficulty with the dialogue. As a celebration for the 60th it failed for me and this project was disappointing. Personally it came across as something that could have been simply being overdone. What would have been good would to have "an unearthly child" get transmitted at the same time it showed in 1963, but looks like Stef Coburn has put paid to that idea. I have ordered the blu-ray but so I can get (I hope) great versions of the original 60s episodes. There were special edits of stories in the 70s, of course. Not a great story but one, in my opinion, a better candidate for editing and colorizing even would be "The Dominators". With extra Quarks :)

If any stories turn to colour I'd prefer them to be shorter 4 episode long ones, that way the pacing doesn't feel as cut down and I think after all the criticism that is what the team will focus on, plus it is probably easier for them in general anyway. I also think they'd go to Troughton for balance. But the problem is we only have Tomb which in colour would not be very interesting and Krotons which is just boring in general and not as iconic. So, they'd probably go for 5 episode long story instead, so they'd probably go with enemy or mind robber. If they do Hartnell again I'd assume Aztecs.

LOVED this release. Sat there surprised and delighted by the playful approach, absolutely reverential to the original material. New music, new CGI, new dialogue, NEW COLOUR, and a thundering, pulse-quickening edit. How you imagine these episodes *feeling* when you dream about them as a kid. I was thinking WOW, we are blessed right now. As fans, we are blessed. Unbelievable to me, who grew up when animated episodes would drop once every ten years, that now projects like this are funded. This is a cheaply made serialised television show from the 1960s, this is all hugely unlikely. So I was actually speechless seeing people complain about it online. Hordes of fans my age, with petty, entitled complaints. They must all be wrestling with something dark. You want the full 7 episodes? Girl go watch them. Are people insane now? Is this just the age of the anti-fan? Have you ever felt joy? I feel like we are so lucky, in the grand scheme of things, to be getting something like this. WAKE UP THE DOLLS. It was good!!

The colourisation itself was beautifully done, but the edit was just so rushed it was hard to fully enjoy. Some of the montages felt farcical with how rushed they were, and whole important plot points were left out or confusingly glossed over. I watched it with a few friends, two of whom knew the story well (like I do), and the third had never seen it before so we kept asking him how he found it. The verdict was confusing. I understand it must have been expensive, but it really could have done with being 90 minutes at the absolute minimum. Still, the original is still there! I really enjoyed the new soundtrack, especially adding in a cheeky cloister bell.

To your point about whether new viewers understood the edit... Deff, I watched it with 6 year old trippies and they had no problems whatsoever and were chatting about it in their way to school for days. It's really clear to them, so thanks for single-handedly bringing DiColour into existence. (oh, and Web of Fear for the next release. It's a great story hiding under too much flab, the missing episode can easily be jettisoned with a few edits)

I personally found the new edit really difficult to watch, though I enjoyed the colourisation I thought that looked amazing I’m glad it exists it’s a cool experiment and hopefully they can learn from it going forward. I would be annoyed if they’d George Lucased the original and you couldn’t watch it anymore, but they haven’t it all exists simultaneously. I think if the original has been preserved why not experiment with it

Thoughts: Youre absolutely hilarious. Make me cackle every time As far as the colorization, the colors are great. The colorizers did a stellar job and i dont think they could have done better. The edit and the sound could be a little off at points but overall it was a good production. Excited for thr steelbook to get to me! For the next story I am pretty sure it will be Tomb of the Cybermen. Just seems like such an obvious choice. It would be pretty vrazy fro in a span of a little over thirty years for that story to go from lost classic to fully colorized and modernized. Of course i just aatched it a few days ago so I am biased 😛. As much as id love war games it may just be way too tall of a task. I don't think the original pacing was really poor or slow so it seems like a tough cut. I could definitely see dalek invasion of earth, mind robber, or war games. Whatever comes next I'm excited for it!

The sound mix was so odd to me, not only because of how loud some of the music was, but also because you can hear the original score underneath it at points so why not just use the original score?? I also noticed that when the Daleks and Thals are having their battle in the city you can hear the gun sound effect of the prison ships crew from Resurrection... which was an interesting choice. Some of the dialogue they chose to cut down or just straight up not use was also weird to me and almost lessens the themes the original story was trying to convey. The cuts in general could be extremely jarring and took me out of the story numerous times (i did quite like how they cut down the characters breaking in to the city, because realistically do we need to see a bunch of people trying to jump over a pit for 10 minutes?) The colourisation was great overall, but as you said, I do feel they went over the top at points. the detail was amazing though, even if I did feel it looked a little oversaturated at points. Some of the new CGI shots of the TARDIS and city were great too. It's probably not something I'd recommend as a first viewing of the story, as intended, but it's definitely fun for a rewatch

Thanks for explaining the cuts. I would not have figured that out on my own. I love this new edit and seriously I don't miss the extended version of Susan's run or that chasm jumping scene which always makes me want to come out and slap a few Thals. I agree with cutting the reflective light scenes. The inclusion of my favourite scenes, like Ian calling the Doctor an "old fool" is great. I'm actually happy to have a cut down edit because it makes it wildly different to watch without taking anything from the original. For future colourisations, I'd love to see Unearthly Child (Ep1 only) just so that it gets released again -- and also The War Games and The Invasion. If they do the War Games, I want them to replace the drawings at the end with actual future doctors. Also - since this was your idea. Thanks!!
