agreed, it's also the best (under) produced punk album too courtesy of Nick Lowe & Stiff records, probably the best cover as well thinking about it.

It's residing comfortably in the pantheon of all time great records. Unbelievable lightning in that jar!

@@gleeart Was under produced i agree (A little flat, lacked some depth), but it kinda works with Damned Damned Damned album and i think thats mainly down to the power of the actual playing. Sadly, it did not work quite so well on MFP album. Which is a very under rated album and i actually really like. Songs like Politics, and One Way Love, would sit just fine on DDD album for sure.

What was it like to be there? The atmosphere, the people, the style, the music. What do you remember?

@@caycuse09 It was such a thrill! Exciting and also a bit scary as people were frightened of us punks and there were some nasty fights and attacks. But mostly it was great to be part of a movement that really shook up the trad music biz. There were some stereotypes of punk, but many of us young kids made our clothes and so it was a real diverse mix of torn tees with safety pins, unusual designs , loads of hairstyles and gunk to help the hair stand up LOL! There was lots of booze and drugs and all the venues were sticky floors and sweaty as 100s of us crowded in to see all the bands. I honestly don't think there's anything today to compare to it! I still feel a thrill when I hear the Sex Pistols etc!!! The 70s era had many huge problems with poor housing, racism, strikes, unemployment and power cuts! London back in the day was quite grimy, and not as luxe as it looks today! The Pistols sang about No Future, and as a homeless 16 year old it certainly felt miserable. Punk was such a positive thing in my life. I was, briefly, in a punk band, which was exciting, and many kids from working class or poor background were for the first time able to just form bands and not worry about lack of college or university music qualification!!!! Tough times, but brilliant time of creativity!!

They were slightly better musicians than the Pistols.

In terms of musical ability at *THAT* time, they were pretty well ahead of the Pistols. That’s not meant to put down the Pistols in any way, shape, or form. They were great in their own right, but the Damned could play their instruments with a considerable amount more ability. Dave wasn’t the greatest singer at this time (a few years later he’d become one of the best ever), but the rest of the Damned were well ahead of their peers in those early punk days. That said, the Heartbreakers could play circles around all of ‘em.

True that. But i think in their MGE period of 1979 they were spot on. That album is an absolute belter. And its when the Cap't switched to lead from Bass so he had some shoes to fill....... But Cap't has always shown he is in fact a superb guitarist in his own right. Mad as a hatter too, which helps hahahaha

He was the driving force behind this version of the Damned. When they regrouped in ‘78 with Captain switching to guitar they became more of a democracy. Everybody got to be part of the songwriting process and there weren’t any ‘bosses’ for a while, which isn’t to say that there weren’t any power struggles… but yeah with the original lineup it was definitely Brian’s band. He was without question the one in charge.

@@higherground7409I personally think that whole 3 year run from MGE through Strawberries was their best and most creative period ever. Then again I never actually saw the original lineup, so perhaps I lack a bit of insight there, but purely in terms of recordings I much prefer the ‘79-‘82 period to anything else.

That's one thing to do. If I could go back I'd go to this show! I was too young to get into clubs in 1977, but if I was 21 it'd be perfect 😅
