I seen this a few months back. Good cast and decent storyline but did an injustice to the art of Chicago Steppin. So what needs to happen is we should reach out to Swirl Films and let it be known our feelings about if you all going to portray an art form Black Urban Dance Style make sure they take the time and get it right.
This movie is actually on “TVOne On Demand”. I actually liked the movie & I need to find the song they danced to on their first & again on their last dance. I can’t find it anywhere due to there isn’t a soundtrack 😩
Actual steppin communities are not pleased with the way Steppin as a dance and a CULTURE has been bastardized for financial gain. Folks, this dance that Darin Henson created for this movie IS NOT STEPPIN. Perhaps if they would've consulted or even featured steppers from Chicago the movie would have some level of authenticity.
I watched the movie, as I enjoy the art of steppin. I was hoping that they would have had more actual dancing in the movie. Hopefully someone will take this idea to the next level and make a better version with the genuine concept being steppin as the true focus .
CHICAGO STEPPIN' IS SMOOTH, WITH LOTS OF FINESSE. I SEE LOTS OF HEAD JERKING AND WILDNESS. THIS COMES ACROSS LIKE WEST COAST DANCING. DON CORNELIUS ONCE SAID, WHEN HE MOVE SOUL TRAIN FROM CHICAGO TO CALIFORNIA. HE THOUGHT THE PEOPLE IN LOS ANGELOS. COULDN'T DANCE AT ALL. BECAUSE PEOPLE IN CHICAGO MOVE MORE SMOOTHLY ON THE DANCE FLOOR. OUR STEPS ARE MORE SUBTLE AND GRACEFUL.
Thank you for bringing it. I've been waiting for someone to splash the light on the *Steppin'* genre of dance. In *Beauty Shop* Queen Latifah did about two 8-counts of the dance and that was it.
Its not The Hustle. They are stepping in this movie. Steppinis a combo of ballroom dancing, Latin dancing and the jitterbug. Its a gangster's smooth groove. At times, it would be be 2 guys dancing together but competing. Its not about love, its about the moves, the smooth style, the dress. A lady follows and should be able to dance with any lead.
I'm from Chicago and that's not steppin. And if you are going to take a style of dance that originated and in Chicago at least get it right and have real steppers to consult or even Chicago actors. I'm offened.
