I've been watching these videos for the last hour. Honestly this is amazing advice. I'm in film school and nobody teaches this. All we talk about is cameras and storyboarding. Don't go to film school. Watch RU-vid.

I think the trick is to put on your Writer’s hat when you wanna tell a story and you put on your Director’s hat when you ask “Why is this interesting?” (To anyone but ME!)

Wow. I just came across this gem. I wonder if they helped inspire the name Film Courage.

Yes! Objectivity! But don’t let that stop you if you are a “writer” and don’t have a “director” who doesn’t have a “writer” (or they are not on the same page) orherwise it’s a good excuse to do... NOTHING.

Well, let’s say you write something like “I wouldn’t want to live in a world where babies can be aborted” - if one is on one side or another - the critique/comment is going to be an expression of their political - not artistic - beliefs... when the audience is 50/50 (depending on the context) One has to discriminate between “artistic” vs “political” (or philosophical) comments esp when the commentator can’t.

Mark mentioned that cool way of approaching actors (especially not established ones) in order to get them into the right mood for a scene but he thinks he can hit right in the forehead a guy who worked on something for two years? Talking about the writer, cause every change causes an avalanche of other changes as well, especially if it's a character change or even slight alteration. With the director, I'm guessing it's easier, egos aside, cause it's either I agree or not? Seems a bit ironic ... Couldn't agree more with the main point btw

Best writer/ Director? Two words: Quentin Tarantino.

Yes, (consistently speaking).

Brandon Tilghman He's one of the few who can blatantly and shamelessly throw exposition right in your face and you'll never see it as such because of how naturally it comes. He also always does original stories that he has to write, so whenever he makes a film, it's always unique and there is no mistaking who's made it. Some films are better than others, but you really can't make a Tarantino film if you're not him. You can copy him very well, but you'll never be exactly like him. That's not the case with every director out there, some prefer safe routes and they blend in with the sea of directors out there. So yeah, he's definitely up there with the best ever. Even if you hate him, you can't say his work will really vanish in film history.

tarantino is a good (almost great) writer and a mediocre (sometimes bad) director. best writer/director are probably ingmar bergman and billy wilder, even "consistently speaking".

For pop movies, sure. Best writer director making movies by a long shot is the Coen Brothers though. Sooooo much more depth, theme, etc. As fun as a Tarantino film is, he rarely has anything to say beyond the surface. To each his own.
