I love drinking whiskey - bourbon especially. That said, I'm keenly aware that this hobby is fraught with all kinds of risks. In this episode of my unnamed whiskey show I break down what I see as some of the dangers of drinking whiskey in hopes that we as a whiskey community might truly enjoy our drinks responsibly.

Started my bourbon collection last month and I'm slowing it down as of yesterday. I made a promise to my wife that I won't buy any bottles for a while. Keeping money in the bank and my marriage healthy is far more important. Thank you Drew for making this video bro. You are a true friend in the bourbon community.

lol......well I don't feel so bad. I too started about a month ago and I have somehow had many strokes of luck in this short 4 weeks at finding so many hard to get bottles. I could'nt stop myself becasue I knew how hard it is to actually find the bottles I keep stumbleing upon. Time to slow way the hell down for me too and yes my wife would agree as well....lol

Kudos to you for sharing this message. I will say I have had a bout with over consumption during the pandemic and had to put a hold on drinking and set myself limits to ensure I don’t go down the dark path. I also appreciate the message at the end - just be happy for today, no matter what’s in your glass. I find myself enjoying a $20 bottle at times as much or more than my $200+ bottles. Everything has a time and place. Cheers!

I usually have a couple whiskeys before dinner, a glass of wine with dinner and another whiskey or 2 after dinner. I enjoy this and it's very relaxing. I workout an hour at the gym every other morning and am in good general health . I'm not overweight, I eat 2 maels a day. I usually have no trouble sleeping. I usually take a few days off a month no alcohol.

Thank you! Much respect for tackling this! I've always felt your channel was different than almost all of the other guys' and this video is just further proof. I personally needed this reminder as the past year gave me too much time to think about whiskey while drinking at home and not going out to bars. Shoot, there's currently no need to stop at 2-3 drinks as I don't need to drive home. I've been drinking pretty much every day for years, but I do recognize that I need to slow down some due to a few of the factors you mentioned. I used to only have about 5-6 bottles in total at any time and I'd pretty much only get a new bottle after finishing one of those 5-6. Now I've got about 30 bottles open and I'll often have a glass in each hand to compare whiskeys - and that's just at dinner. It's been really fun to recognize the nuances between the various types of whiskeys and to try some of the harder to get stuff (which I never partook in before). Going forward, I'm gonna make more out of each pour and savor the moment more.

Good commentary. However, the sugar comments are not really accurate. Pure alcohol products like whiskey have zero carbs, they get removed during the distilling process. I switched from beer to whiskey because it tastes better, and it's keto-friendly. So, whiskey neat has no sugars. Mixers on the other hand mess all of that up, which is one of the reasons I usually drink it neat. :)

I start out the year with a limit of twenty five 750ml bottles. When I reach that limit, I make myself wait until January one to replenish my inventory. I also set an annual budget of $850. Twenty five bottles is equivalent to approximately one drink per day.

Hey Drew! Great channel and content, I'm a fan of the videos. Just wanted to clarify a point, there is no sugar in bourbon... The caloric content is from the alcohol itself, which is just over 7cal/g, so, greater energy density than sugar overall. Alcohol is an energy source in itself. But, no sugar in alcohol.

I wasn't going to mention any of the following here... Until I read A since-removed post. Now I feel compelled. This is for you, and any other who might find themselves similarly situated, and I hope you get to read it. Paul, every story still being written is a potential success story... And steps towards freedom in any context are small positive starts that often lead to incredibly blessed journeys. The best that we can hope for in this context here, imo, is a lamp for our feet, a light to our path, and unfortunately not a Q-beam spotlight that might allow us great foresight and foreknowledge... We're forced to take steps in faith instead of being able to really walk by our sight. But we can walk without stumbling, or at least without permanent failure, when we have competent guidance. I was in the prison of addiction for 30 years. (After military service it was really severe for 9 years.) I am truly free now! A new creation in fact, for nearly as long. I didn't drink alcohol at all for nearly a decade. I've been able to take it or leave it for over a decade now. Whereas it once had a hold on me, even as a controlling power, now I have a abundant life of true freedom. Many of my friends and family not only haven't realized this freedom in their own lives but haven't even survived as long as this. We just buried another last month in fact. But as long there is breath of life, there is opportunity... And Hope. I'm praying for you in this today and as I'm led to do so in the future, Paul. I would like to encourage you to ask for and accept help from all sources in this--its what I did. I cried out in desperation to God and asked Him to take it from me because I realized that I was powerless over it. I hoped that He would hear me, and care, and help me... And He did! It's difficult to convey the throws of addiction to those who've not experienced it themselves... But perhaps you can understand what I'm trying to say. You are worth everything, just because you are, regardless as to your situation or belief. And lastly I want to encourage you to see strength in the attempt, regardless of your perceived measure of success, and to not give in, give up, or get discouraged. And always remember: we are Image Bearers, fearfully and wonderfully made, known before our births, knit in our mother's wombs by Love himself, unimaginably precious and loved, sufficient to Him who is Perfect. We don't have to do or not do anything to be these because it's not up to us but rather to Him as to who we are. Truly knowing this is true freedom. And what is intended for us all, imo. All our best wishes and prayers for you, now and always. May your freedom and joy abound!

Drew I think this is a smart topic and I certainly wouldn't worry about the eye rollers. Glad your not becasue there is nothing wrong with real talk and their is absolutley nothing wrong with showing compassion and hope for others. Addiction is a real thing that all of us are privy too if we are not carefull. Good on you for showing guts and doing the right thing by being responsible. Last night my oldest son said he is going to go 30 days without drinking anything. It tore me up knowing he has already reccognized a potential problem but I was also proud that my son is using his common sense and making the right choice. Drew you have a good channel and I think it will keep growing. Maybe you would consider bringing this all back up once a year to simply bring awareness.

I recently became a more casual drinker of less than an ounce of any type of alcohol a day where some of it goes into mixes and actual food recipes. I want to drink more whiskey, but I don't miss it, since, I have this food mentality where I prefer not to consume much of anything. So, my doctor recommends that I drink at least some liquids such as beer and a lot of water to stay hydrated. I have a whiskey, wine, rum, and brandy collection not because I drink much at all. The collection grows because I do not drink enough to drop the number of bottles from being replaced by two or more in the future through people giving gifts and simply shopping around. I started drinking Wild Turkey 101, and before I came close to finishing half the bottle, in various ways I have at least eight more of the same bottle back in the pantry. I fully expect that the best way to drop my bottle count is to occasionally have a drinking party for a sports event.
@jasonanderson8102
@jasonanderson8102 3 года назад
At different times during my whiskey journey, I lost sight of the basic, sound reasoning presented in this video. It’s easy to do, especially if you are experiencing high amounts of stress or anxiety in your life. Now, I never consume more than 3 ounces in a day and take multiple days off every week. Ive had doctors tell me that anything more than 7 drinks a week is too much, but I’m pretty sure that any drinks a week could be considered too much, so I don’t know what to do with that guidance. If you ever become concerned about the amount you consume, then it’s probably too much. I’m comfortable where I’m at now, but expect it to be a bit different for everyone. Anyway, it’s good to be honest about the fact that while we love it, it can become a major challenge to your emotional and physical health. Enjoy your whiskey. Savor the bouquet and the flavors... and be honest with yourself if/when you ever question if you are doing anything other than that.

It's especially easy to drink too much if you live in one of the states that is really lockdown happy. I don't, thankfully, but there's still way less to do than there used to be, so it's easy to just sit at home and have more than a few. A day off is good. A week off is better. My personal rule is no alcohol on more than 3 days in a calendar week and no more than 3 days in a row. As a bonus, the less you drink, the more bang you get for your buck. No judgement to anyone who drinks more than that - it's just what works for me. (I thought this was going to be a jokey video, but I appreciate the seriousness of it.)

This is an important conversation to have. I take a dry week every once in a while for the reasons you mentioned. I've found it easier to go too far as I've gotten older and as I've developed a taste for cask strength whiskey. If you have a habit of having three drinks of 80 proof on Friday, then suddenly switch to 135 proof, you are easily going to over do it.

As someone who just recently got into whiskey, I already had to take a step back and ask myself if I need to slow down. I kinda went on a bit of a spree buying whiskey's to try like an excited child and had to remind myself that ultimately this stuff is poison and should be enjoyed in moderation , not to mention the dent it made in my wallet. My solution is I gotta find a whiskey bar to satisfy my need to try a bunch of different whiskey's and find the ones I really like so I can be more prudent about how I spend my money and not feel anxious to drink so often in the name of exploration. Anyway, good on you for making this video, it could be a wake up call for some people. I hope I don't insult anyone by saying this, but I feel like there are likely people in the whiskey community that are very similar to the stoner community, where the act of drinking becomes the focal point of their existence and personality, and that really should not be the case for anyone.

I saw the clock backwards and then looked at Knob Creek to see if this was just a technical issue, but actually that is the way the clock works. Is this the first Easter Egg in a whiskey-tube video??

It's ridiculous to spend big money on bourbon, whiskey, etc. Same thing with wine. What determines the price of a bottle of alcoholic beverages is their availability and quantities produced. Just because Jim Beam makes a crazy amount of bourbon every year, making it very available, doesn't mean it is bad quality. Sutter Home produces a crazy amount of bottles every year so that brings down the price but Sutter Home wines taste just as good as other wines selling for 10 times the price of Sutter Home.

"There's plenty of plank in my eye"... well said and often overlooked. However, shouldn't those "planks" be "staves"? 😂🥃

I didn't know that about the sleep deprivation but anyhow I enjoy a glass every night or every other night after work it's every night just a glass and then go to bed but if I go home at Santa Friday night and find out that have a Saturday off then I'll have a glass with a cigar and then I'll go to bed I think the key is just moderation I mean you know if you just going through 345 glasses a night and the others going to be an impact tragically Capital One maybe two but usually one does it for me healthy to fall asleep fast but makes sense with the sleep deprivation

You are saying don't put whiskey on a pedestal while you have whiskey on pedestals behind you. Crack open the Nikka from the Bottle and start your Scotch Journey.

Absolutely do not get the obsession with alcohol and Whisky. Someone once got me to try some that they claimed was nice and high quality. It was disgusting. Weird hobby, we all know deep down alcohol is bad anyone using it should be trying to give up.

From everything I’ve read (which isn’t extensive) there is very little to no sugar in bourbon.
