Star Trek's Vulcans are tactile telepaths and can use their control over their own bioelectric field to manipulate others through touch which allows for a variety of techniques. The Mind Meld is one such tool, but it has its dangers too despite being around since Surak's teachings.

Vulcan psionic (psychic/telepathic/mental power) innate natural abilities are as far above Humans as their physical capabilities are. They just have an extra edge via their mind-meld that can be used as a powerful intrusion against normal telepathic contact. A Vulcan that tries "normal" telepathic feats that telepathic humans do is far better at it by racial nature alone. The Vulcan nerve pinch is an easy thing that even Vulcan kids can do, other beings need to study on how to do it...that example was just for a scaling effort. Betazoids, even half Betazoids, should make you see Vulcans for what they are... biologically speaking. They are just a bit better than humans.

I guess that's one reason Vulcans didn't like being touched by humans, etc. w/o some warning. T'Pol either crossed her arms or held her hands behind her back when uneasy around others. She also hated crowds as well for a similar reason-like in that cage in 'Borderland' or during the speeches-which is why Archer circled around her carefully, giving her room when she needed it, but insisting on helping her when she was unsettled (in 'The 7th' and 'Impulse'). T'Pol did allow herself to get close to others as she got used to being around with others and could control her emotions.

You could easily describe a mind meld as the most intimate thing a person can experience. And even if you can control your own thoughts to the point that only your most conscious thoughts were shared, it's still deeply connecting and a far more intimate form of communication than any human being can do naturally.

I sort of view mind melds as having originally been one of Spock's convenient super powers that would show up when needed to advance the plot. Among those I include the long-range-telepathic sensitivity to the destruction of the USS Intrepid, the forgotten Vulcan third eyelid, the ability to control guards from a distance, the ability to direct Sirah the Yang, his ability to simulate the Vulcan Death Grip, and even his super strength, his occasional near invulnerability (The Apple), super hearing and genius intellect, and of course his ability to have his body function for a long time without his physical brain being present. Originally, of course, he was just the smiley alien with pointy ears that liked the singing plants on Talos IV.

Because thoughts, memories etc. are essentially electric signals bouncing in the brains, mind meld in real life would require very sensitive nerves in the tip of the fingers. Some people are innately hypersensitive and as such, could theoretically perform mind meld if they can also reroute their own internal brain signals at will through their own fingers. The location of the fingers when touching someone else's head depends on how close in proximity the brains are to the skull or skin of the person being touched. This is similar to how EEG is taken. What comes to nerve pinch, it has been extensively discussed before, and there is theories that human nervous system has points across the spinal cord that are hypersensitive to touch and can trigger involuntary reflexes. I haven't personally tried yet to find those points to verify if the theories are correct. However, common sense tells me that those points if they really exist must be in close proximity to neural pathways that actually connect the relevant muscles to the spinal cord.

I always found the Stone of Gol a fascinating piece of technology that has, since its introduction, been a wasted resource in terms of story telling in the Star Trek canon; how far did this technology progress and could the telekinetic energy be used as an alternate power source: more Vulcans in gestalt, more power?
@littlekong7685
@littlekong7685 3 года назад
The books on the Romulan Ascension from Vulcan has some interesting theories on this. Because the Romulans left at the eight of the psychic blood wars, just after Surok came to power on Vulcan, they had ample natural telepaths of their own (who only made up a small percentage of all Vulcans, before Surok taught discipline and awakened it in more). They used the psychic resonance chambers to scan space for habitable worlds, to jump into warp for short duration's in emergencies (almost always killing the Romulan/Vulcan telepath in the process), and as weapons against suicidal hostile alien forces (also, generally fatally). By the end of their journey they had so few natural telepaths left that it was all but erased from their genome in subsequent expansion. And they lacked the discipline of his teachings to awaken their own potential, so it was lost.
@Kian2002
@Kian2002 3 года назад
@@littlekong7685 That is very interesting and continues what has already been established in canon in Star Trek Enterprise in the story featuring the Aenar: Gareb was essential but expendable as being a member of the Aenar he didn`t have political connections to the Andorians and likely wouldn`t affect the diplomatic relations with Andor, should his part be discovered, or for that matter be missed because his people were considered a myth and were themselves pacifists and not likely to seek reprisal for his abduction, like the Andorians normally would. Clearly the Romulans retained techical understanding of their ancestural Vulcan telepathic science, in the telepresence device, but were limited in that they could reproduce the hardware yet were unable to provide the living component necessary to make the technology viable. Still I think it would have been interesting to see what a group mind of Aenar could have achieved in gestalt?

I think there is a true danger that the person (Vulcan or otherwise) who initiated the mind meld, if they are unprepared for the willpower of the person they are melding with, can be overwhelmed and eventually even succumb to the will of the person they are interrogating. I would think this would be more akin, and even more established, that this only happens with people who truly trust each other to open their minds and share their inner-most thoughts as opposed to a type of interrogation.

What The Mind Meld did to T'Pol combined with finding out she's Half Romulan really messed with her head, and combine that with the death of her Daughter when she was 'cured' she was never quite the same and doubted her self for years even decades afterwards. It was kind tragic really and we lost something precious in that stories proper resolution by having Enterprise axed when it was. Or to put it another way I actually care what happened to that crew - I can say as much for most members of starship crews in more recent times and to be honest perhaps I can now say the same about DS9 as well. (as I'm back on a DS9 isn't much good tip when I did actually like it at one point but the more I understood it the less I liked what it was saying "morally speaking" it's kinda immoral - which I can excuse Voyager being - as Voyager is a big pile of stupid fun - I can't say the same about DS9 - so over time i'm back to disliking it again for that immorality)

In times of need, Spock always mind melded with either Nurse Chapel , or Dr. McCoy to temporarily store his mind, such as the "death of Spock " scene from Star Trek 2. My favorite meld scene was in " Mirror mirror" when evil Spock melded with McCoy.

Some telepathic abilities are learned rather than born-with innate abilities. Like how Riker can technically telepathically speak with Diana Troy despite Riker isn't a telepath.

TBH its not even that outlandish if we consider psionics to be a thing - so long as the android has equivalent neuro pathways, which the Soong type androids could have once a more biological element was added to their construction. Data, for example, could not - he was too 'artificial'. But the next generation of them possibly could, or could modify themselves to do so, since they were increasingly closer to organic biology and thus could be compatible.

Myriad does not require an “of”, it’s implied. “There are myriad things” > “There are a myriad of things”
@midniteoyl8913
@midniteoyl8913 3 года назад
Both ways are correct and depends on how it's used and why: If you want to say "a great number of," then use "a myriad of." If you want to say "many," then use "myriad," without the extra words. Correct: There were a myriad of reasons to take a break from class. Incorrect: There were a myriad reasons to take a break from class. Correct: She saw myriad possibilities for the new application. Incorrect: She saw myriad of possibilities for the new application. For both incorrect examples, a simple fix would be to add or remove the determiner "a." For instance, removing the "a" before "myriad" from the first incorrect example would make it a correct usage. Also, adding an "a" before "myriad" in the second incorrect example would make it correct.

🤔 Do the 2 people doing the Mind Meld have to speak the same language? So if Picard wanted to resist a Meld, then could he think in French? 🤔💭🇫🇷 Sulu in Japanese? Chekov in Russian?

No, because once they meld then the melder(?) now also has access to the language.

You know, ive never seen Suraks teachings as an actual discipline. Its comes more off as self repression. Pretending its not there. Discipline would come from experience and self control, using the right emotions in any given situation. But that comes from life experience.
@amiscellaneoushuman3516
@amiscellaneoushuman3516 3 года назад
that could be explained by the differences between humans and Vulcans, as it appears in the show that Vulcans experience much more intense emotions than other species meaning that while most species can learn to control and channel their emotions Vulcans have no choice but to totally suppress their's or else be controlled by them. Really the thing which surprises/annoys me is that Vulcans almost never seem to properly grasp that their philosophy of emotional suppression is unnecessary for other species or that logic and emotion aren't mutually exclusive ends of a binary for most non-Vulcans.
