Jacobson at the 5 and Loyer comes off the bench.....zero points in the championship game says he's a liability when the crunch is on.

Haha does this guy know who the head coach is?!? Matt Painter is very loyal. The upper class men get the opportunity. Renn and Berg are going to get time and a lot of it.

Have no issue with Cart doubting Jacobsen, but I definitely take issue with Matt Haarms being made out to be a good former Purdue center. When Purdue had Haarms at center they played entirely different. That team was centered around Carsen Edwards and Ryan Cline chucking threes. Haarms is without a doubt the worst starting center Purdue has had in the last 20 years. Carl Landry, JaJuan Johnson, AJ Hammons, Caleb Swanigan, Isaac Haas, Trevion Williams and Zach Edey are all significantly better than Haarms. It’s really not even close.
@martydavenport6078

But I think he's referencing Haarms because of his shot blocking ability and bounce. Of the people you mentioned, I think only JJ had similar shot blocking ability/tendencies

No way. He will play but not start. I hope Caleb Furst starts as a senior with TKR Smith Loyer and Heide. That’s the best starting lineup in my mind but only if Furst regains his swagger from his sophomore year.

TKR played very well as the main big on offense, however the paint felt wide open because it seems like he has a little white man's syndrome (can't jump). My guess is that he becomes unplayable on defense at the 5 in certain matchups. Both Berg and Jacobsen can shoot, play them at the 4 on offense for spacing and defend the opposing 5. (Don't dig too deeply into 7fters trying to play the Gillis role, Paint will adjust responsibilities accordingly)
@cadenweaver5612
@cadenweaver5612 3 месяца назад
Comparing Jacobsen and Berg to Furst is completely apples to oranges. While Furst is likely a better basketball player than both and can play the same position, you can't get away with 2 6'9 players getting a lot of minutes at the 5. Keep him as the only true sub for TKR's time at the 4 or small ball matchups. (Heide will be unplayable at 4 sometimes)

I predict. Smith, Fletch, TKR, Heide and Jacobsen. TKR will be the center which is weird but I see it. Houston back in the day had Ralf Sampson AND Hakeem Olajuwon. No I don't think either of these guys are as good as those guys but I am using it as an example. Then Furst, Colvin and Berg will get a lot of minutes and perhaps start some games or even play some more. I hope Furst improves and he can play outside a bit more. I am not sold on Colvin but hope I am wrong there also.

@nateriley4067
@nateriley4067 3 месяца назад
@@edalbanese6310 I know the plan is to initially go with TKR at the center spot. I think he’ll be fine at the 5 on offense but I worry more having a 6’8” center on defense. TKR is not a shot blocker and is only an adequate rebounder given his size. We all saw last year when Edey would take the occasional breather how our defense would give up points quickly as there was not a shot blocker in the paint once the primary defender was beaten off the dribble. Hopefully Berg is ready to step in and be that defensive stopper, but I have my doubts. If not, then Jacobsen will be forced into an early role in the rotation.
@edalbanese6310
@edalbanese6310 3 месяца назад
@@nateriley4067 although i like Berg, time will tell. Someone has to fill that gap, either Berg or Jacobsen. TKR will do his own thing, whatever that is. For this season the entire team has to contribute as i dont see a one person scoring like Edey. I fear we will use Edey a lot as a comparison.

With Haarms and elite 3-point shooting, they were 1 FT away from a F4. My concern is that if Jacobson plays too many minutes early he will gas out like Fletch and Braden did in their freshman year. Better to bring him along slowly and let him adjust to B1G physicality.

@@reptilelicks9796 you hate to lose anyone, but it's a position of strength so I'm not at all concerned. He wasn't (isn't)going to be around long enough to learn the system or get strong or play defense. That works on some teams and even would on some past Boiler teams. Not this one. Heide and Colvin might both end up our star. And the "other" freshmen look 'ready' to play. I hope he has a great year for someone. He wouldn't have made this years team any better than they'll be without him and (if he DID play) probably have stunted the growth of the 2 guys that will be around longer. JMO

Is everyone just out on Berg? Jacobsen is more interesting but Berg has been matching up with a NPOY in practice since he stepped on U.S. soil. I wasn't worried about the Edey/Clingan matchup specifically because Berg is near identical in size and likely comprable athletically to Clingan.
@SteveMichael
@SteveMichael 3 месяца назад
I hope you are right but what I see is a guy who is a step slower, even now, shoots a bit worse in the post but can shoot better from the outside. Someone who is a step or two slower from the outside. That step is HUGE and thus why people are saying what they are. The other issue is the work that he is putting in and how is holding up mentally. Does he really want to be over here playing basketball? With Zach you saw someone who was super serious about getting better. His hand were way better, and that could have been because of baseball and hockey. Again I hope Berg bust his ass off over the off season and starts OR he plays a lot when TKR goes to the bench, as I see TKR as the center. I don't see TKR being great though. I hope again I am wrong but TKR did good against backup centers. Time will see if he can do that against starters.
@cadenweaver5612
@cadenweaver5612 3 месяца назад
@@SteveMichaelAny concern that TKR can't protect the rim in the Big 10? I may be wrong but I feel like he doesn't alter shots due to stature and little verticality. Might be a big issue against slashing teams with a competent center as I think he looks a little too clunky athletically to be confident in his post rotations, particularly if we run Heide at the 4.

You can't throw out competition when evaluating talent and what a guy can be. Greg is so delusional with his takes, Jacobson is light as hell and he just doesn't have the strength to be extra productive year one and when your not strong enough you foul and often. You can be high on a guys potential but not this year. Dude shut up
@stephenhildebrand1332
@stephenhildebrand1332 3 месяца назад
Weight isn't all that matters. He weighs between 220 and 250 (depends on your source, 230-235 seems to be the most consistent) which will help him matchup against most bigs in the country. But weight matters most offensively inside, and Jacobsen's strength offensively comes from his ability to spread the floor with his 3 pt shot. Defensively his advantage is his shot blocking, and weight plays a minor role there. His strengths are not negated by his weight and he absolutely has the potential to play a pivotal role on a good big ten team based on what he's shown up to this point.
