A thread of the Danyibakaka festival celebrated by the Akpini people of the Êʋê ethnic group.
The Danyibaka Festival dates back some 450 years when the Akpini people were migrating from Notsie in Togo, passing through the north of the shores of Lake Volta. History has it that they were blocked by the flooded Danyi River and made it across only after offering sacrifices to the river gods.
But the migrants did not return to the river as they promised, and for three years, there were no births and no deaths in their new town i.e. Kpandu.
After consulting an oracle, they went back to the river to offer sacrifices: women bore children and prosperity followed.
