The simplest explanation is that Vaatu corrupted Unalaq similarly to how he corrupted the spirits and humans in Wan's time. Unalaq thought it was his glorious destiny to become a "proper" Avatar and redefine that role to be more spiritually-inclined, and Vaatu exploited and twisted that desire to align with his own revenge plan. To that end, there is no justifiable reason for what Unalaq is doing anymore because he's simply too far gone. He completely detached himself from both reality and his own humanity in favor of spiritual nirvana, playing right into Vaatu's hands (figuratively speaking).

I think this season is great, but Unalaq is the weakest link. I fill in the blanks a bit with his character and can still enjoy the story, but he does seem to be doing all this evil stuff “just because”
@Mrryn
@Mrryn Год назад
@@cloudwatcher608Eh it doesn't bother me as much. He is among the weaker villains in Avatar, but let's be frank...did Ozai have some tragic or pivotal backstory that influenced his own actions? He was a manipulative, gaslighting, abusive POS obsessed with having power and control and him being the head of everything. He is Azula but without any of the nuance and subtle tragedy in her character. Even Azulon, with what minimal time on screen or in the comics he had, had at least some slim nuances to his character, far more than Ozai. Point being, is Ozai now considered a "weak" villain as a result, because of how two-dimensional he is? I think not any more than Unalaq, and Unalaq doesn't need any crazy to justify evil or selfish or power-hungry actions any more than any person: he was the younger son of a leader, not as physically capable, but had ambitions for more and was willing to use nefarious means to get what he wants and abuse his "outwardly good nature" to gaslight others. He may not be as compelling as Amon or Zaheer or even Kuvira, but if anything he feels much more like a villain than those 3 by just being blatantly self-interested and willing to go as far as he did if it meant he was at the top...just like Ozai. The difference/failing imo that made Unalaq less interesting was simply the performance, in that Mark Hamill is just such a deliciously evil bastard in his performance that he is more enjoyable compared to Unalaq who feels like a dick riding the coattails of people trusting him more and longer than they should because we know what a dick he is.

Damn, that moment of Tenzin lost in the fog is so powerful. Trying to ground himself to an identity he had built up entirely on being Aang’s son was driving him mad, but once he stood firm on who _he_ was as his own man - probably for the first time in his life - he finally found peace.

@benjaminh.morgan3193 Год назад
@@pabloc8808 And it feels so well earned, too. So much of the season leading up to that has been building up the tension between Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi, which largely resulted from Tenzin having no sense of self beyond his romanticized view of Aang and his own responsibility to carry on Aang’s legacy.
@luwirap
@luwirap Год назад
Maybe it's just me, but I always love the B-PLot of this episode. The whole IDEA of the fog of lost souls for me is like a meta response/commentary of the creators of LoK for fans of Avatar who were disappointed how LoK was leagues different from ATLA. I consider the Commander Zhao's cameo represents the crazed people who keep on finding the the things they wanted to see from ATLA in LoK. They've been forever telling how they wished they see their favorite characters from old show more, they hoped Korra could be more like Aang, and a bunch of throwback things they wish were easter egg dropped, etc. Then when Kaya and Bumi lost their minds and telling different stories then ran to different directions, it was a metaphor for the creators trying to listen to the people's feedbacks but only found themselves disconnected from the real story they wanted to tell in the first place just to satisfy disappointed fans. When Tenzin said that "I WILL NEVER BE THE MAN YOU WERE" it's like telling us that LoK WILL NEVER BE ATLA. Aang finally came in and told that Tenzin that HE IS TRYING TO HOLD ON TO A FALSE PERCEPTION OF YOURSELF it felt like he was speaking directly at us audiences that we've been watching the show wrong all along. LoK IS NOT ATLA. AND LoK SHOULD NOT BE ATLA. LoK is LoK. This is just my thought about this episode and I always hold on to this episode to remind me why I like LoK this much is because it grows with its audiences.

I think what’s truly sad about this season, regardless of how good it actually was is that Unalaq actually has no motive other than the fact that he wants power and who has more power than the avatar? He got rid of his brother so that he could be the chief of their tribe, and then he got rid of the avatar so that he could be the avatar. He just wanted power and it was as simple as that.
@khafaniking1230

@Mrryn
@Mrryn Год назад
@@khafaniking1230And even then, look at Iroh: he was raised by Azulon, same as Ozai, but even in his general days was still "his tea-loving kookiness." If anything, the parallels when thinking are even greater between Unalaq and Ozai. Both are second sons to the leader of their nation, below a powerful and kind and beloved figure in their society. They both use manipulation of people and events to sow doubt into their older brother and take their place and point of power, with aspirations and ambition to go even further: - For Ozai, it was about being heir then Fire Lord then Phoenix King and sovereign of the earth, burning down kingdoms if necessary. - For Unalaq, it was heir to his father then Chief then enforcing unification of both Poles to become direct ruler to both, and when the same brother he sought to supplant the first time had the Avatar, it moved further to take that from him by becoming not just another Avatar but *the* Avatar, even if it meant dominating a world of darkness.

I personally feel that Unaloc, and even Amon, were meant to be precursors to meeting the antagonist group from season 3. A lot of their backstories seem to reference the negative perception that benders, and the Avatar, represent to their world since the Avatar's inception. I felt the underlying theme was that group.
@withxoutxlife
@withxoutxlife Год назад
While it may seem weird that Tenzin left the others souls in the fog, they were likely put there for a reason. Its meant to be a prison for people that have harmed spirits in some way. A lot of them probably deserve to be there, like Zhao. Its also likely that their bodies have all long since perished, so at most they would only exist in spirit the way Iroh does. Considering that they were put in that prison to begin with though, odds are likely that they would not be anywhere near as peaceful or respectful about spirits as Iroh is. Especially after years of being tormented by the fog, driving them mad.

Raava IS Korra’s connection to her past lives and the Avatar spirit. Since you’ve already watched the finale on Patreon, I don’t mind saying that they never really settle whether she’d have been able to bend air, earth, and fire without Raava. In Beginnings, it’s told that she can hold the elements for Wan, but after they merged, I’m not sure if she holds the essence of Korra’s bending or if she’d have it even without Raava. 20:08 I HATE THIS SCENE SO MUCH but if it makes ya'll feel any better, it's believed that only the CONNECTION was severed, and that the past Avatars still reside somewhere in the spirit world. Korra can't talk to them, but they are not just gone forever. Some people even think that the severing of the Avatar Cycle actually freed the past Avatars in a way, because now they can rest in peace instead of having to guide the next Avatars to come.

I wouldn’t say that Mako and Bolin got “taken out easy” by Unalok and his twin children. Essentially Mako (firebender) and Bolin (earthbender) were fighting what appears to be 3 water bending masters on their home turf. Mako and Bolin are great benders/fighters but they were at an extreme disadvantage

8:17 🥲 12:42 always have the theory the people who were in the fog are able to return since they were dragged there with their bodies. Tenzin did it 18:18 that gives hope that the other Avatar spirits are there....somewhere 20:40 the exact moment they lost a lot of fans right there 😢...still wonder what they were thinking with this
@METerrell
@METerrell Год назад
It's my theory that after 10,000 years of being reincarnated into all of the different people that the person is able to retain all of the bending abilities and not just the main element they were born into without the Avatar spirit. It might be more difficult to switch between elements or have more than one active at a time, like the ball of air with the other elements around it at once or when both Wan and Korra used all four in rapid succession here without Raava when fighting Vaatu. After they've combined, most people call Unalaq and Vaatu, UnaVaatu.
@XavionofThera
@XavionofThera 9 месяцев назад
We actually see that Wan can bend multiple elements without Raava in beginnings. He's practicing earthbending but then goes and finds the clash between his fire and spirit friends, at which point he uses airbending to try and separate them. The lion turtle just says that Raava has to hold the elements "until he masters them".

Nice reaction like always guys, that episode is for me personally the saddest episode in the series 😢 but its all for a better and greater purpose :) just wait for season 3, Korra is going to change the world.

Looks like pudgey ain't the one getting roasted for saying something silly in this episode. It's your boi: "I can't believe they breathe fire" spartan. We all say dumb things some times. Let's just not be condescending about it.

Unalaq is a power-hungry psychopath. This is something you are born with. He doesn't care about his own children. He doesn't need a reason, or a back story. He's insane. Sometimes we can't romanticize the villain.
