In honor of the film's big anniversary, ET is opening our vault to share these rare interviews with director Christopher Nolan and actors Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart.
Remember when Heath was announced to play Joker and everyone thought it was a terrible choice. Then he comes out and gives that fuckin performance. He collectively silenced every former critic.
@@yshaaxateverything8799 The actual meaning of criticism is to give their opinion no matter good or bad. But in recent times there are 'critics' who think only negative opinion is an opinion which changed the meaning of the word
@@fearzine732 this ain't it chief Joaquin even after the movie he still being told and put on the second best joker It's been I believe 10 years since this movie and Heath still has the top spot I don't think anyone right now can really top him Don't get me wrong I loved LOVED Joaquin's joker I got some amazing vibes off of his performance but for some reason Heath still has it at a next level that I don't think is easily passable with another actor. Although if you ask me I don't think it's right to put numbers on them because Heath and Joaquin both played a different type of joker different timelines of the joker I mean and both did freaking amazing.
I still feel like Christian Bale doesn’t get enough praise for his performance either in the Dark Knight. I really think he complimented Heath’s acting in that movie to really make you feel Batman’s conflict and deciding who he’s going to become to stop men like him. It was a great movie.
No sorry, Bale as Batman was not good. His voice, his appearance and wtf was wrong with his mouth in dark knight rises? He did a good job as Bruce Wayne tho
True, Eckhart delivered a great performance and with a character that doesn't give the actor a lot - an idealistic dreamer and a decent person. But he found something in it that made the character memorable. His Dent wasn't just some idealistic, naive doofus, he was a real man - smart, educated, tough, courageous, but he just happened to choose a path that really couldn't have ended in any other but tragic way. Not in this world. It's actually funny Nolan originally wanted Matt Damon, he wouldn't be half as good as Eckhart was.
Heath set the bar high, on his interpretation of the Joker, not anytime soon or maybe, forever to be surpassed. Heath wasn't playing the Joker, he was the Joker, he owned that character. Batman:The Dark Knight, is by far the best, of the Nolan Batman trilogies, and the batman franchise.
@@ericechols7638 But I wish I could thank Heath for playing the joker but now he's an angel. Apart from the joker I like him in 10 things I hate about you
@@TheClassicMagda 10 things i hate about you, was a good movie. Just remember & watch the dossier of movies he left behind, & that's thanks enough to him. RIP Heath 😇
The trilogy in general changed superhero films. Its gritty and dark with witty humour and huge emotion and a great soundtrack. Imo only infinity War and endgame can compare to how good the dark Knight trilogy was.
@@sarcasticmind1765 No man, just no, think again. I really like Winter Soldier but it's no where near The Dark Knight, not even close. They are very different movies. The Dark Knight has amazing acting, from Heath to Christian Bale, Winter Soldier doesn't have that.
He played Joker so amazingly well that you forget it’s Heath Ledger under there. In my opinion the best superhero film ever, and it’s a timeless masterpiece.
Not only forget it's Ledger, but you literally can't see him if you try. Even knowing it's him, it's still unreal. Apparently though, Heath already had a similar villain character he had been working on for a while. He became interested in The Dark Knight because it gave him a chance to explore this character. If not Batman, I believe Heath would have found another movie to bring this same character out. It's a great character he created, and it happened to be expressed in the best possible movie at the time. Great timing to showcase a character within him that otherwise would have laid dormant.
@@sym6696 he wasn’t saying that he’s not british. it’s just wales is a less common british accent so he was specifying. this is coming from an englishman btw
@@jjfromthebigland781 Yea I think Hannibal is in a much smaller % of the movie than the joker here but I still agree with your point. In fact I think Hannibal and Ledger's Joker are maybe 2 of the top 3 movie villain performances of all time (vader gets the other spot).
I would say the best superhero film ever, as besides scarecrow and the riddler, TDK doesn’t really pull too much lore from the comics. You have two face but I’m saying like subconsciously infinity war is probably the best comic book movie because it uses a lot of lore and ideas form the comics without it feeling cut and paste, and since the Thanks wins I mean like come on that’s the cherry on top
@@James-xw8li Endgame is more of a comic adapted book movie whereas I’d say The Dark Knight is more comic inspired movie. TDK is more for people who like realistic takes on the genre and Endgame are for people who enjoy a film that knows it’s a comic book movie
I always think Marvel films and tv shows are more childish. Still good just different to how dark and gruesome the performances for Dc films and TV shows can get
Heath is the reason people remember this movie. The reason there is more Joker movies, he revamped the character and ppl fkn fell in love. Now he is dead. Please remember him and how amazing an actor he was even at such a young age. On a non movie note... Was also a genuine kind soul. ( i grew up near him) We miss you Heath
Great comment from Bale "Nothing to do with the circumstances now". This is so true, Ledger would still be admired the world over because of this acting
I’m a HUGE Batman fan, always have been since I was a kid, and I’ve seen all of them pretty much, even the cartoons, and I’ve got to say. Heath has been my favorite joker of all time imo. 🤷🏻♂️ my guy absolutely killed it. May he RIP 🙏🏼
I have never been a fan of Batman but The Dark Knight is one of my all time favourite movies, mainly because of the Joker. Heath Ledger's Joker is my all time favourite character from absolutely anything! No matter how many times I watch that movie, I always love that character and Heath Ledger's performance is amazing.
Got his joker tatted on my right arm. My favorite actor and so sad he passed away so young! I can’t imagine how hard it’s been for his ex wife and daughter!
There are very few films that I will watch sometimes purely for one actors performance, but this is one of them. Just watching Heath in this role is astonishing. You can’t catch him acting and you can’t find him in the performance. Amazing! He truly deserves every accolade he gets for his performance. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Really his entire costume... the faded Purple and Green tattered suit keeps it accurate but somehow realistic as if a person would actually wear something like that, and add the messy makeup - It was subtle and spectacular.
No offense to Joaquin Phoenix, he's an incredible S tier actor, but he didn't bring the Joker to life the way Heath did, you weren't legitimately terrified of his Joker the same way, and yes part of that is the direction & setting of the film, but I still believe Heath far surpasses any other Joker
Not gonna lie. I don't even care to try to watch any new Joker movies. I'm sure eventually I'll give that one a shot, but I'm just really not interested. I have a solidified joker memory in my mind and its just perfect. I don't want a reenactment. I don't want to debate. If I watched it right now I'd just be comparing and dissecting.
Well that was because Joaquin's take was completely different. We are supposed to feel pity for the character. Whereas we were supposed to feel threatened from Heath's joker. Completely different plotlines. And both did a pretty damn job in doing their respective takes.
They're different interpretations of the character in separate realities. I would argue there is little to compare beyond the fact that they are both called Joker. But really they're not the same person and a comparison is pretty moot. They're both solid performances of different people. Jack Nicholson and Sid Caesar are also fantastic as the Joker. These two are more in line with what people see the Joker as in the DC universe so they make more sense to compare with Ledger, whom I believe was inspired by these two and some part Mark Hamill's interpretation as well. Heath took all that and created the most rounded character and was the best of those doing *that* character. Joaquin Phoenix took that established character, threw it away, and made a completely different character. It's no longer "The Joker" it's more "a Joker." I don't feel these two interpretations compare because of that. If it was a more traditional Batman film than imo it would be different.
You can't get a better Joker than Phoenix and Ledger. They where both so amazing. But in my opinion Heath was a legendary Joker. He set the stakes so high and he still surpassed that with the acting he did as the Joker. We lost a True actor. The whole movie was amazing and was one of the best Batman movies just in my opinion. The whole crew gave it there all. Much respect to that. And RIP Heath 💔🙏 you where the most inspiring and most loved Joker on my side. 🙌🏼 Just a fantastic movie and fantastic acting to
Heath set the standard at a level that i dont think no one will surpass him I grew up watching the development of joker and once heath got the role he was outstanding Hate that we lost him
Legend! Because of him I have watched the dark knight a thousand times. And that intro, MY GOD, "I believe that whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you.... stranger" That was a perfect description of himself 🤔
'See . . I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve.' Heath Ledger was AWEsome in 'the Dark Knight.' The Joker was so scary and so disturbing in a very skilled professional way that that 'performance' changed my memories of him in some of his movies that I saw and maybe didn't think were so great. Now, I'm like . . wow . . I saw Ledger in 'A Knight's Tale,' what a great movie that was, when I actually thought it was kinda weak. It's kinda true of life, too, though. You do ONE super amazing thing. It changes all you did and the future, too. Course. Ledger's gone now. Bane is up there, though, in 'the Dark Knight Rises.'
I was blown away by the joker. It put Batman back into an enjoyable place for me and the joker role was one of my top favourite characters. The way the film was scripted I really hoped to see him back. I didn’t find out about his death until years afterwards and was utterly gutted - not only a shame he couldn’t find help, but also sad he didn’t get to see the recognition his act deserved. People may think his praise is tainted because of pity, but that’s not right. The acting was brilliantly disturbing and twisted yet darkly humorous without taking us all to a place of misery.
I was just 3 years old when this movie came and I watched the movie when I was 8 or 7 years old god I couldn’t understood what is happening at the movie but now I’m 16 I do know everything about the dark knight I lived with that film and I will always watching it till the end of my life thank you Heath for the best movie in the world and don’t forget that you do exist in here 🔥🥲😢
Not to piss on Joaquin Phoenix’s acting skills and the Academy Award, but I just can’t stop imagining what level of acting Heath Ledger would have achieved and how much higher he could’ve set the benchmark if he were still alive and had been a part of The Joker movie.... Just gives me chills
I watched TDK the other day, after not seeing it for years. It holds up, I think it's easily Christopher Nolan's best movie, it's the most well-rounded and original one, and one that found the best balance between commercial, accessible and epic filmmaking and something grounded, artful, thougtful and ambitious. And it wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for Heath Ledger. His performance is just remarkable and rare, as Maggie Gyllenhaal adequatly puts it. Every little gesture, etc. was perfect, it was such a specifically crafted character. Besides Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone, I don't there is a more iconic game-changing performance than this. It elevates the entire movie.
I'm so satisfied to finally watch Christian Bale in an interview. That's so rare, I just thought he's in a vast, white void when he's not acting, waiting to be awesome on a movie set again
I always thought Heath was great as the Joker, but then I recently watched 10 Things I Hate About You and I CANNOT believe how different those two characters were. There’s many actors who kind of play the same person every time I guess, like they don’t do enough for me to differentiate each character. But Joker and Patrick may as well have been played by 2 different people. “Good acting” has always been kind of hard for me to identify but Heath was definitely one of the best
Where did the sweet sweet guy when he start to play the joker? I mean.. it's so incredible to see him transform to the most lunatic villain in the most exceptional way. Brilliant. Such a talent
U know i think I actually found the main point why he he’s different from other… The thing is , heath studied him so much that, he actually became that person and wasnt trying to “act” like a joker, or be mean… Like all the other jokers try to look villian, or evil , but in heaths case it looked like if a joker existed he would act like this… it was very natural for him.
Maggie didn’t seem too convincing when she said it was great working with him. I heard rumors that when he crashed that dinner party it was the first time Rachel, Alfred etc. saw Heath in full makeup and people said they were all truly terrified. Again, just rumors but I like to believe these ones :)
Heath will always be remembered for playing the best Joker of all-time, and even better than Jack Nicholson's Joker in Batman movie, which was released in 1989. In fact, the most incredible of Batman the dark night is although he was the supporting actor, he became the movie's star, to be frank no Marvel movie overpasses this masterpiece.
