You must be reading a different Old Testament than the one I’m familiar with.

This is exactly what new age scholars have discovered is the stories in the Bible are pieced together to look as if it's one continuous story about a monotheistic God but it's easy to see the different characteristics in the Gods that were the masters during that time. All made modifications to the old testament. The point is supposed to be that its teachings are influenced by God. In the Bible your either a slave to sin (evil) and the devil or you a slave to the true ELOHiM (Good) but u ARE a slave to one of them. And to be literal slaves in the Bible wer loved and well taken care of. You could be stoned by your community in the Bible days if you mistreated or killed your slave or maids. The meaning of slave in the Bible is much different in this way then. The Bible even talks about government and how we are to be subject to them because HE ordains government as long as it doesn’t go against worship of HIM then we are to be totally subjected to every law they make.
