I have enjoyed collecting for as long as I can remember, and still collect Lego and Starbucks Mugs to this day, but have modern trends and attitudes pushed collecting too far? Has collecting become acceptable mass consumerism? Is it just glorifed hoarding?

I really appreciate the more realistic stance on collecting on this channel, Holly. You frequently talk about space, organization, and how Lego collectors can often buy sets for the sake of it rather than out of enjoyment for the hobby. I haven't really seen many other Lego RU-vidrs discuss these, so it is so refreshing that you can showcase the highs and lows of this hobby.

Exactly this. It's why Holly's channel is my favourite. So many other channels are out of touch with what the viewers want or can afford.

*My tips & tricks about collecting:* 1. Please watch your budget. The most common mistake is to buy way too much in 1 time and then not looking at the future. 2. Don't try to get everything of a collection but just a part of it. I only collected the main pokémon games and I'm fine with it. 3. Be happy with your collection. If you have stuff that don't make you happy about it, you should sell the collection later on. 4. It's best that you have a connection with your collection. I was the #1 Belgian player in one of the games. 5. Don't try to get a lot of collections at once, especially Lego. Focus on 1 or 2 themes and try to get what you like. 6. It's okay to skip stuff in the collection when you think it's not worth it like similar reprints or stuff you simply don't like. 7. It's best to have a collection that you use more than just for display. This would give you more enjoyment and happiness in time. 8. Please respect the space you have. It's best to store things like videogames in a box and sort them out. Lego is great for display. 9. It's best to not have too many sealed sets. Especially if you don't invest in Lego, it can become difficult to store them all. 10. It's entirely your own choice on how you really collect stuff. If you want to collect things a different way, it's your own choice.

Personally, my LEGO collecting got out of hand while I was working at the LEGO store because since everything was 50%, I found myself buying wayyy more sets than I actually needed, and sometimes even sets that I didn't really love, just because they were so cheap. Now after not working there for a few years, I've had to learn to reprioritize what I'm actually interested in & only build + display what I like. For my LEGO collecting, I think as long as I don't have an unmanageable backlog of sets & parts in my inventory (you know, just so many sets or parts that I know I'll never build or use) I will be ok and not move into the unreasonable collecting / hoarding. There's a big difference between being a big collector and being a hoarder so it's important for each collector to find their balance I'd say. Great video!!

Like the guy from the Secret Galaxy channel once said in his video "Why I Sold My Collection", collect only what you love or things will get out of control pretty fast. Best advice for collectors ever.

Its an important convo to have. More than ever, people try to fill their inner void with consumerism. I only buy retired stuff. IMO the scarcity is what makes the difference between old unsold stock and a collection. The prices are very inflated, so that prevents me from buying things I dont care about, because even they are an investment. Overall it feels very meaningful. Its a very personal thing. Do what makes you happy, but dont get lost in it. Its a hobby, its not you.

Display value is king for me, over rarity or completion. What's the point of buying big UCS sets or 1/2 sized figures if I can't display them in an awesome way? The completionist mindset was always lost on me cause let's be honest no line is perfect and I never saw it in myself to buy a product solely because I bought other better products.

Hi Im 75 yrs old and have been collecting specific things for at least 45 yrs . I have come to the same conclusions that you have . I saw an article on some site a few years ago where the moderator asked people to list their favourite aspect of the hobby . 75% of the votes went to "THE PURCHASE "of the item . Dont forget , we have all been trained to be good little consumers , basically from the day we were born . I am now getting rid of a lot of my STUFF , and enjoying the ones that I keep . I now think .what is the point if you cant even put it on display and its stuck in a drawer or cupboard all the time .

I’m 38 and got back into LEGO a couple of years ago. I’ve mainly stuck to Star Wars except for a couple of sets. I got really into Microscale building and custom Brickheadz. I think that actually building then taking apart and building again let’s you enjoy the hobby without having to buy more and more sets. I guess my problem now is the Pick a Brick Wall.

I think a lot of what we see on youtube is hoarding but I appreciate how you actually curate your display in the cabinets and I think people should be doing more of that. You do not need to get every set that comes out. Throw away your boxes and it is okay to sell sets that you don't enjoy anymore or just sit around collecting dust. The thought of having a lego room jam packed full of sets piled on top of each other stresses me tf out. My rule is one nice shelf (okay it's a large shelf but not CRAZY) and that's it and things get rotated in and out. When I first got back into lego in 2017 after a 10 year dark age from childhood I bought a lot of sets on sale just for the sake of them being 30-40% off even thought I didn't really like them but fortunately lego is pretty forgiving and these "mistakes" ended up making me a lot of money when reselling. Now I treat it like clothes and only buy sets if I absolutely love them, and usually wait at least 2-3 months after release date after the youtube hype has died down to see if I really like a set or not.

Hey Holly! This is a great, and very thoughtful, well-argued vid! Well done!👍💕You cover a lot, I'll focus on a little. There are Starbuck's Travel Mugs (that look amazing?!) Thank God I didn't know about that! Umm, I've lived in the same house since 1968, when I was 2 and, as an only child, had the space to keep all my stuff. While I collected many things, eventually, I said, "Enough!" And would buy one or two items each year. The exception is Lego. As a MOCcer, every piece works with all (most?) others and can be disassembled and stored for future use. Last thing, I bought a pair of Gen 1 Air Jordan's when they came out. (Poor condition -- I wore them in high school for a year.) Still have them, and here's the thing. I recently tried to wear them, but the glue in the soles had become totally brittle. You've been warned!

I'm dating myself with this but I worked at Toys R Us when the Phantom Menace was coming out and I was collecting literally EVERYTHING Star Wars. I opened a box and found the last figure I didn't have and I realized that I was excited about a Swimming Jar Jar figure. I had to stop then. I only got a handful of Attack of the Clones toys and just the burned Anakin's from Revenge of the Sith. Now I'm careful to only focus on what I actually want. MCU Legos are my kryptonite though.

The biggest difference between collecting and hoarding to me is curation. Think of it as a bonsai tree, pruning and evolving as needed. A part of the hobby to me is the trade and selling to other collector's which in turn curates your own collection into being more refined. I collect movies but there's no feasible way to collect every movie and a ton of movie collectors buy bulk just to have it while I prefer having a collection that says something about me due to the selections within the collection, not necessarily the quantity of the collection. Of course I do have some bloat, some blind buys of movies I didn't end up loving, but I'm rather proud of my collection.

A great topic, I don’t think I am extreme compared with others, I sometimes go six months or more without buying any Lego, and i tend to mostly buy the Ideas and creator expert sets I like, but I certainly don’t feel like I need all of them. That said, this year I had a freak out and ended up buying the Bookshop as it was about to retire and I knew if I didn’t buy now I wouldn’t pay over the odds for it later and would regret it. I do get a lot of joy looking at my sets though and some little figures or animals, particularly the Elves baby dragons which are my favourites! I love that I still have my first ever set from around 45 years ago and rebuilt that fairly recently. Lego still brings me joy, but there are couple of sets that I like less and so may sell on.

Lego broke my collecting habit in 2019. There were several themes I was completionist on, but 2 examples were architecture and speed champions. An early architecture set was the 2009 Empire State Building - 77 pieces, $20, but by 2019 the same building in the same theme was 1,767 pieces and $130. That's just taking me for a ride. Speed Champions also got bigger and bigger, and went from doing iconic cars to cars that don't even exist IRL. Makes a lot of money for LEGO though.

After years of accumulating my LEGO collection I finally grew up to get rid of some builds and figures that are no longer of use to me. I became more selective and now I only keep those figures and sets that I really think that are good enough to keep them. It`s not easy but it`s necessary. Otherwise, you will have a lot of items but you will miss the joy of having things.

Good video! It made me think about my collecting stage as well. My main lego theme I collect is Ninjago and when I started getting back into it, I wanted pretty much all of the figures from 2011 and 2012. It did take me a long time to realize that t wouldn't be possible, especially with how much money and time I had. So I decided to kinda put a "stop" to it, only collecting some of the new DR sets to get each of the Ninja's new suits and 1 set from Crystalized. But that's it.

TBH, I always tried to limit myself, no matter what I was collecting. Earlier I was into model horses, but the horses really had "to speak to me" for me to consider buying them. Due to certain circumstances, I developed a rather unuusal way of collecting. I try to find everything about a certain iteration of Boba Fett: the Tython version (or post-Sarlacc). I collect everything which exists for this character, if I like it (which is a crucial aspect). There is not too much, so it is not that difficult to limit it. Okay, I am also into Star Wars Clone Troopers, Mandalorians and Jango and Boba Fett in general (but I am much more picky here). I try to be more about quality than quantity. I have also learnt to wait. E.g., I would love have a Hasbro Black Series Jango Fett in my collection. But the aftermarket prices are a little...insane. Now I could bite the bullet and just get one. Or I could wait until an oppurtunity appears (I do not care about packaging, I unbox all of my figures). Or maybe Hasbro decides to issue another one, which is also fine with me. And I learnt to look at things, like them - and move on. I do not have to own everything myself.

To me, a collection is what the Oxford English Dictionary defines it as: "a group of objects, often of the same sort, that have been collected". You then can make it as niche as you want or as broad as you want. For example, we all are LEGO Collectors in the sense we all buy sets for no reason other than we want to have them. Then we can specialise in a more niche thing within the theme. For example, I collect LEGO Pirates ships and Harry Potter. I do still want to have *every* Harry Potter set. And for a while, I was on that same path with Star Wars too, for example. But the moment Disney killed Star Wars, all my interest in collecting LEGO Star Wars sets went away. Now I still collect LEGO Star Wars but I limit myself to just a certain type of sets (UCS/adult display sets based on Lucas live-action Star Wars, ie. Episodes 1-6). If Warner messes up the Harry Potter series with the usual crap for the pseudo-"modern audience", I will very likely end up doing the same with LEGO Harry Potter. Collecting is about assembling a group of things that bring you joy. Hording is just amassing a ton of stuff with no reason or rhyme. Collecting boxes does NOT fall within that example at all 'cause you're not hording boxes for no reason.

My budget has increased. It's hard to keep that in check when you find yourself suddenly able to buy sets you could only dream of having before. I should be "content" with the 1 or 2 whale sets that I got but then it keeps going. Basically if I have a cool display idea or use for it I get the set. Interesting to see so many sets at near 50% off as well with pre black friday deals going on. It's a fire sale and it's hard to resist such good deals. It's a tough call: Am I getting the set I want or am I getting it just for the deal alone (or fomo of it retiring)? All things we must ask ourselves in trying to live within reason (if that's our priority). Only we ourselves can answer that. "You only live once." If it brings you joy & doesn't harm you or others, have at it. I always wonder how successful celebrities like say Taylor Swift or Leonardo DiCaprio keep their drive going when they have enough money to last for centuries. We're only here for a short time so make it a good one. And I'm all for spoiling one's self basically, lol. That's all I got on the matter.

Collect what you enjoy for the enjoyment. I don't mind if people make money off selling their collections as an incidental to their hobby. However, if I see a video from a channel with Lego investment advice, I immediately block the channel. Not interested, and it can kill a hobby. The Taylor Swift thing reminds me of the comics with multiple covers. That didn't go so well for the comic book companies.

YES. I’ve seen a couple of Lego RU-vidrs room tours and it’s insane how filled to the brim they’re room is that it over flows to different parts of their house. It makes me take a step back and look at my own collection ( which is medium to small of a collection) and do I really need 10 Lego cups in a box or a spare box of parts I haven’t touched in a while. I think when collecting (especially lego) it’s ok to get rid of or let things go not everything needs to be kept. That’s why I only allow myself to keep things from one theme I really care about other then collecting everything Lego has ever made. Thank you for talking about this ❤️

FOMO and relative short space of availablity make a toxic combination. Just looks at GWPs, you sometimes buy more of the things you don't want or need to get that little extra, just because it's special and only available this weekend. (And in the case of McDonald's can be unhealthy too.) At the moment I'm looking at my hoard of LEGO and think what I am going to do with it all. I'm currently building Gringott's but I have nowhere to display it. Still, I am enjoying the build, so that's OK, I'd guess.

"Are we collecting or are we just purchasing?" For me, the answer is easy, as I ONLY buy second hand retired sets. The seller (I buy from) is the one who purchased the set from Lego, while I am merely "collecting" it, from that person. I preferably dabble in really vintage sets, mostly 80's, so I'm sure I'm collecting, not purchasing, because of the low supply and high demand.

I think you are at a point where everyone who collects comes eventually. Look.. at the end of the day when i look at my game collection, and my lego collection, and force myself to pick the things that i would never sell and really want to keep.. I got the original complete in box Pokémon red, blue, yellow, and from my lego collection my ucs falc and the ucs at at. So what does that say? It tells me i have a lot of stuff that i like.. but just a few pieces I actually really really never want to lose! That made me really think about what i want in my collection. With lego it’s a little difficult because i also like to build the sets! And i like to switch what I display from time to time. But with lego im also more critical now! really refreshing to hear someone like you talk about this topic! (excuse my English! Im Dutch, so its not my native language😅)

The most complete LEGO collection was the Prince of Persia sets from 2010 at 4/7 sets. I did not know it was based off of a video game until nine years later. I only got them because I wanted the camels. I should've gotten the ostriches too. I also got the whole series one of Microfighters. I still have not opened half of them because I cannot get myself to do so. Honestly in the past few years I decided to only get things that I will have some degree of interaction with. These include posters and things that look good on display or things I can wear. I try not to get sets for minifigures except CMFs. Ultimately it is extremely unhealthy to be spending more than 1% of your income on collectibles, unless you do that for a living.

It's important to know that hoarding is a mental health issue, not having too much stuff or being messy. People who hoard do so because they have some trauma they have experienced and they seek to deal with through stuff. It is no different than alcoholism or an eating disorder. I think they key question we have to ask ourselves is "why do I do this?". I think the Marie Kondo response is the key, does this spark joy? If the answer is no, when we really need to examine why it is that we are doing it.

I am more into building mocs rather than buying sets, so i choose which sets i buy and keep built based on how much i like them or how they fit my space, instead of that'' gotta get em all for the sake of getting them all'' mentality

Over the past few months for back story I work at a bricks and minifigs and it has helped me realize I do not need all these things I end up not getting things. What is a collection though for me it is when you like something enough to get more of it and have a hard time not getting more of it. It is an addiction...

My main collections are Lego,Pokemon cards and Taylor Swift cds🙈......sometimes with collecting you can stop feeling fun doing it but then stopping is too hard to even think about doing.😢

This is intresting to me as i don't consider myself a collector despite owning a good bit of lego. I don't consider it a collection. To me, it's just my stuff. Things I enjoy. I won't get funko stuff because they just look ugly to me and i have no desire for a statuette without any articulation. I collect carboard boxes from anything so keeping lego boxes is just habit. It always comes in useful to have spare boxes.

Lego is an interesting case because so much of the value (to me, anyway) is in the building experience. Once you've built it, what do you do next?

I think the most interesting subcategory of your HP sets is the early, yellow-head era. If you do plan to make space, hang onto those.

Yeah my struggle as well - fear of missing out. I like so many sets and I have in my mind "shelf life" that I decide rather to have something than not, but ending up with huge backlog of sets to build and also - lacking the space already... So I know I cannot have them displayed and build all at the same time, but till the time I will be ready to switch - there will be just to many good options waiting...

Absolutely focussing on the things you want to collect and not feel the need to collect. This is such a tough thing to manage and the FOMO is real but it's vital to keep in mind what you actually want.

I think this is a really interesting video! I would say I collect books and LEGO. I think some people may say I collect yarn too, but because I use it and change it into something else, I really don't see it as a collection. Collections have been around for years - look at the Victorians! Animals collect, think magpies. I think having ~things~ can be both positive or negative, but people also collect things digitally like photographs. I've definitely, like you, declutted a lot of other "collections", like stationery and sentimental items that I was keeping for the sake of it and didn't really have an attachment to. Re-evaluating your collections every now and again can really make a difference, so you buy and collect things that only bring you joy. I think as long as it's not hurting anyone and makes you happy, you do you!

Completion of all StarWars figs has never been something I have worked towards. I only want the best version of each character in each form(outfit, etc) However i seem to be getting ones that i didn't even want(just as freebies in used hauls that i wasn't really buying the haul for) and now i have so many I'm kinda already on the way to collecting them all. Hhmmmm, maybe I'm a hoarder 😂

I sold 110 sealed Lego sets I had lost the joy of collecting them just to complete them. But I made £6500 but I learned that just to collect the bigger sets not just the merchandise. Which doesn’t really hold any value just to sell it.

I totally agree about FOMO and that's a bigger problem for me. I've bought sets that have shot up in price after retirement and because of that I've bought sets that I don't even know if I like. Like I love collecting minifigure size TV/movie vehicles. So I got the 1989 promo Batmobile off eBay years ago. But then when I heard the big 1989 Batmobile was retiring, I got it and it's been sitting on a shelf since then. I don't know if I'll ever build it but I just didn't want to miss out on it. I have that same problem about being a completionist with the Creator Expert/Icons vehicles. I haven't hated any of that line so far but if I do, I might stop getting every single one. Other than that, I mainly just go for the stuff that appeals to me. Like stuff from iconic TV shows/movies, famous landmarks and fairground rides. But I don't worry about completing any of those collections. I do keep the boxes because something I love today might be something I don't like tomorrow. I've sold sets that I thought I'd be keeping forever and the boxes helped me sell it and get more money for it

I think you hit a lot of the major points about collecting. Yes, space is always a concern. FOMO is definitely used in marketing. Using Tayler Swifts CDs was a good example. Releasing them in different colors will get the superfans and completionists to buy multiple copies.

Great video! For me I've been trying to look at the Lego hobby more from the perspective of just having fun building. Putting together the occasional set, customizing them, making mocs, and then making my displays look nicer. It's definitely more enjoyable when I'm not in the collector's mindset of wanting to have every set of a theme or even every minifigure.

At the moment, I definitely am hoarding. I got back into Lego around Christmas 2 years ago, and I immediately had the FOMO experience. So I bought what I could afford, while keeping an eye on sales. I do have a vision where I want my collection to be in 3 to 5 years, and at one point, my purchases will be more focused. But not now. 😅

I think there's different areas of collecting. There's things that were meant to be collected and things that incur collector interest. For example, many modern lego sets and even older vintage sets have a compatibility that begs people to "collect them all" like the modulars or the vintage town sets. However on the flip side of this, some things people want to collect without a push from some outside source. For example coins were meant to be used as currency by the governments that issue them. When they were warn out they were meant to be discarded or recycled. But some people just decided that they were interesting and started collecting them.

There are many issues about collecting but most aren’t relevant to me, the issue I do have is it has led LEGO to make more expensive sets “for adults” that I have no interest in.

Great topic, I’ve honestly been considering slowing down on my collecting simply because it’s not as fun as it used to be. I became so focused on getting each new figure from each wave that I stopped caring about the builds and the joy it originally brought. Great video!

Great and honest video. For me personally I fell out of LEGO collecting last year just due to the rising prices and the amount of space I needed for all of it. Honestly I don't regret it, despite still liking to follow lego news. Ended up getting into Hot Wheel collecting instead, I have found limiting myself to things I find in the wild as opposed to eBay has made it alot more exciting and manageable for me. It happens so often where I find a vehicle I didn't even know existed and leads me down a new rabbit hole.
