In the annals of science, there are pages that amaze with their complexity and ingenuity. Yet, there are also those that truly shock, revealing the depths of human cruelty. Such a disheartening chapter was the era of the Third Reich, where Nazi doctors conducted gruesome experiments on humans.
In the thirties of the twentieth century, Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist party came to power in Germany. Hitler and his followers believed in the theory of the Aryan race's racial superiority over others and aspired to create the ideal human - strong, healthy, intelligent, and obedient.
The concept of the Aryan race's prominent role led to the development of various programs, including eugenics, which entailed the regulation of human reproduction.
Under the eugenics ideology, Germany focused on genetic research to maintain and strengthen the Aryan race. These studies encompassed biological experiments and genetics research.
For this, they employed various methods, including medical experiments on prisoners of concentration camps deemed inferior or hostile to the regime. These prisoners included people of different nationalities, social groups, and even those with specific physiological features.
Throughout World War II, in concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Dachau, Buchenwald, and others, various medical experiments were conducted on prisoners, subjecting them to horrendous tortures and abuse. Among the most notorious and ghastly were those performed on twins - children and adults sharing similar genetic codes.
The experiments on twins in Nazi Germany were part of the Third Reich's overall plan to create an ideal Aryan race and eradicate all who did not meet their standards.
The main initiator and executor of these experiments was Dr. Josef Mengele, who earned the nickname "Angel of Death." He was an educated and ambitious scientist, keen to prove his loyalty to the Nazi regime and advance his medical career. Mengele had a keen interest in genetics, heredity, and the racial traits of humans. He considered twins as ideal subjects for his research, as they shared the same genes but had different life conditions. Mengele aimed to discover how environmental factors, nutrition, diseases, stress, and others impacted humans. He also sought ways to enhance the genetic qualities of Aryans and eliminate undesirable genes in other peoples.
For his experiments, Mengele selected twins from the incoming Auschwitz trains with prisoners. He personally examined each person and separated the twins from the rest. They were placed in special barracks where they received better food and clothing than other prisoners. However, this was merely a facade to deceive the twins into cooperating. In reality, they were prepared for more brutal and senseless experiments, leading to unbearable suffering and often death.
Among the experiments on twins were injections of various chemicals into the eyes to change their color, causing intense pain, inflammation, infection, and blindness. Attempts were also made to create conjoined twins by stitching together skin, blood vessels, and organs, leading to gangrene, sepsis, and death.
The Nazis infected one of the twins with various diseases, such as typhus, tuberculosis, malaria, syphilis, and others. Then both were dissected to compare how the disease affected their organs.
Mad doctors conducted blood transfusions between twins of different races and nationalities to test its impact on immunity and health. They performed amputations of limbs, organs, teeth, and other body parts without anesthesia, then transplanted these parts to other twins or animals. And many more horrific, inhumane experiments.
It is hard to believe that all this occurred in reality, not in some nightmarish dream or movie.
This historical documentary film only shows a small part of the crimes of the Nazis during World War II.
