The Dark Truth About Travis Pastrana

Travis Pastrana is one of the godfathers of action sports.
Whether it be motocross, freestyle motocross, rally car racing, or skydiving, for decades, Travis has continually pushed the boundaries of everything he’s tried his hand at.
If there was a Mount Rushmore of action sports, his face would definitely be on it.
When you listen to interviews or watch videos of him, he’s virtually always filled with smiles and positivity, but if you take a look back on his career, it hasn’t always been a smooth ride.
The question is, how has one guy been able to do well in so many areas, while constantly coming back from dozens of injuries over the years?
And more importantly, how did he get to the position he’s in in the first place?
Travis has long cemented himself as one of the greatest action sports athletes of all time, but he’s definitely made a lot of sacrifices to get there.
This is the story of Travis Pastrana.

I was at the X-games when Travis landed the double back flip. Was the most awesome thing I've ever experienced. I was maybe 14 years old. We were sitting 1st row along the balcony above the ramp they'd turn around on after the landing. The WHOLE staples center went silent. All you heard was Travis' 2 stroke pinned to the max. Then, when he rode away the place obviously erupted in excitement. I'll always remember that day like it was yesterday. I actually found my ticket stubs from that event while going through boxes last weekend.

Here's one of my favorite Travis stories. We're at the New England Forest Rally when a kid comes up to Travis and asks him to autograph a hat for his buddy who is in the hospital. Travis says "let's get him on the phone!" and proceeds to chat with the kid in the hospital. One thing I learned early on - Travis has lots of fans who frequently visit the hospital.
@w1jim
@w1jim Год назад
Here's another one Travis told a bunch of us about 15 years ago at the STPR rally in Pennsylvania. We're in the town square prior to the start of the rally and a kid comes up to Travis and says that he saw him in Syracuse do some crazy flip and it was rad. Travis said "you look familiar, we're you in the stands with another guy with a broken arm?" The kid said "yeah, that was my friend so and so!" Travis told us afterward that lots of his fans have a broken arm, had a broken arm or are going to have a broken arm, so it was an easy call.

i met him after waiting in line for over an hour for his signature at wickedbigmeet, i felt stupid because i normally wouldnt do that but for some reason i stayed in line and im glad i did because even after signing autographs for well over an hour the Travis was still upbeat, happy, and seemed genuinely excited to meet all his fans.

He is constantly nice and outgoing even when he has every reason not to be. I was at NEFR one year at the start of stage 2 or 3 when his car suffered some electrical problems and he had to retire right there on the line. So he just hung out. Chatted with everyone, all smiles even though he was disappointed. Crazy charismatic. Seems like a great dude.

Travis did this at the Ojibwe forest rally also. Couple teens are there and tell Travis that their buddy couldn't be there. Travis told the kids to get them on facetime and he chatted with the buddy as his crew was yelling at him to get back in the car to leave service to avoid penalty.

Anyway they had track setup that went in and out of the studio and both riders did a single timed lap. Travis went first and set a fast lap (on a slick track with dirt, concrete, and asphalt). Jeremy went next and just barely beat Travis. I remember thinking, all the pressure was on McGrath. Happy-go-lucky Travis, the 125 champion, had nothing to lose, but Jeremy had to win - he was the 250 champion. It was great TV and a surprise to see them on the Tonight Show.

I remember seeing Pastrana and Windham at one of the Terrafirma premeirs sometime in the late 90s when Crusty Demons had created a huge market for motocross videos. Fox had rented out this mall in i think Indianapolis and the premeire was in a bar upstairs across from the arcade. The whole mall was closed, and you were either in the video or had been invited, so it was odd seeing kids still in the arcade at first, then i reckognized Windham because he was a big deal in supercross at the time. Fox had a few bikes on stage, and everyone like Metzger who was always drawing even at the bar and I think maybe Guy Cooper and I can't remember all the names but it was all the company guys and riders. Everyone except Mcgrath. He was always too good to show up for anything. We went over to the arcade to kill time because I was barely 21, and still playing a lot of video games and so were the other riders. I had no idea who Pastrana was at the time. I dont know if the bar didn't want them in there cuz of their age or if they just didn't want to be around everyone getting wasted all night. Windham must have only been 17 or 18 and Pastrana looked a lot younger than that. He was just a kid man, it must have been somewhere between 1997 and 2000. They both seemed like really good kids, very polite and respectful to everyone. We played a bunch of games in the arcade with them while we were waiting for the event to start. Later on during the event when i was hearing how talented "this kid" was and then seeing him in the video i figured out why I couldnt even beat him in an arcade race!! Lol, It's crazy to think how long hes been involved in all this
