My stepfather was a POW in the real Stalag 7. I'm guessing he was probably around 175 pounds at the age of 20. He came out weighing 90 pounds. It took him years to recover. He would NOT talk about his experiences with his Mother, Father or brothers and sisters. I was 11 years old when this show aired 20 years after the War. We would watch it together. He LOVED this show. He would blurt out how things really happened when the cast would do all their zany stuff. His stories were horrific. We spent most Sundays at his Mom's home having big dinners with his family including all my step-cousins. Every time we went there, his Mother and a couple of his brothers would pull me aside and ask with intense curiosity, "what did he tell you this week." This went on for the five years or so that the show ran from my 6th grade til I think my senior year if I'm remembering right. ( I'm old now and my memory isn't as good as it used to be.) It was surreal to me at the time. He had been my stepfather for only a year or so at the time and he was opening up to me! A dumb kid he didn't even know that we'll yet. All of his brothers were also in combat, and he wouldn't talk to them. I believe Hogan's Heroes was cathartic for him. I hope it helped other POWs too. Nearly all of them are gone now.
CBS had a habit of doing that. Gilligan's Island, Lost in Space, Hogan's Heroes, Gunsmoke and The Incredible Hulk all had stories that demanded closure. But, in each case, the actors were not told personally. Instead, they read about it in a newspaper or magazine. ABC actually stumbled onto the idea that the "series finale" should be a smash. "The Fugitive" always had good (but not great) ratings. The fourth and final season ended with a two-parter: "The Judgment," in which Dr. Kimble was finally cleared. It had a huge audience that wouldn't be topped until the last episode of M*A*S*H* (1983).
I agree, I always thought it should have ended with the camp being liberated, maybe Colonel Klink being either captured and tried for War Crimes, or being killed by one of Hogan's crew while trying to escape, and, Schultz being revealed to be a spy, for the Allies, as it was shown that there were some spies at least working for the warmacht for German Intelligence, at least on the show. Maybe even having one or , more of Hogan's heroes maybe NOT surviving the war! Might not be funny, but, it would add a bit of realism to the show. Let the show come to an bittersweet kind of ending!
When was Berard Fos EVER a German? Crittenton was a BRITISH officer that outranked Hogan. Fox also played a British traitor named Chitterly. But NEVER a German. And certainly, never Burkhalter's brother.
He played two different roles in the same episode. Colonel Critton was brought in to replace a German aristocrat. Just like Khinslow had to play an African prince in one. episode.
Beat to death is an understatement. The person who killed him definitely felt he couldn’t be dead enough. Pretty sure it had something to do with his bizarre sex life.
I was a young teen when this was on. I was always intrigued by the tunnel and hoping them to get away. But was aware enough to think this probably upset a lot of people. Making light of being in one of those places. Pretty dark really.
This was a very entertaining show to remind us of a scary history now modern american government is showing its in some ways history can repeat itself we all need to start caring for our fellow humans
Werner Klemperer and John Banner were both in the American Army as was Burkhalter(I don’t remember his name) he and Banner were both Austrian Jews. And he was tortured by the Gestapo, before he could escape
They could have reboot this whole series in a Cold War setting. That would have been cool, with Schultz as the Pres of the Schotzie Toy Company! And his bumbling bookeeper in Klink, Hochstetter as the local E. German Stasi agent all set in the humble German town of Hanmmelberg! Or Berlin!
Did nazi this coming. Knew almost all that was mentioned in this. Thus it had not made me Führerios. One of my favorite shows as a teenager. Always loved to see Arlene Martel on.
I think I know what happened . The neonatzee s took offense to his acting . He spent all of hogans hero’s knocking the commander of the stalag . Somebody didn’t like that . And the murderer got tired of it . R.I.P. Bob .
My first wife is German. We moved from Germany to the USA in the late 80s. This show pissed her off so much. “Germany came close to world conquest, but they make Germans look like fools!” Bob Crane’s death was due to his addiction to sex and pornography.
Yeah, German nationals dont seem to take to it - that is why I watch it. I would avoid the world conquest thing - Germany is extremely fortunate it was not simply handed over to its victims.
I'm a huge fan and have every episode on DVD. This narrator is ABSOLUTELY mistaken. That clip was Noam Pitlick, who played multiple characters. But never did Fox play Gen. Burkhalter's brother. The time he played a split role was the two-parter, Lady Chitterley's lover. As the series goes it was a tough subject to make as a comedy and Hogan's pulled it off brilliantly. I'm 61 and I believe this iconic series will live forever 👍
A SLEAZY BEST FRIEND WHO BOB HAD ENOUGH OF AND WAS GOING TO WRITE OFF, COULDNT HANDLE IT AND KILLED HIM. LIKE PLAY MISTY FOR ME--> THE GUY WENT PSYCHO. WASNT PROVED
Germany absolutely took all stuff after to be only historical and the society as a whole does not do much for promoting anything inappropriate from the war. Even things which are Nazi, are never displayed anywhere but in the museums or camps, which is for remembrance and history. Anyone still owning stuff, will always be stored in boxs and placed in closets.
Yeah, that’s not a great thing when you put any name on a GRAVE. Nobody is supposed to know who that is for in Kill Bill. That’s totally Quentin Tarantino putting in obscure references
With Germany's merge with the Japan's conquer the world efforts, and the martial arts coming to the US in popularity during the 60s, give options to who were the murderers in the area.
BUT...! Werner Klemperer (the perfect actor for the part) refused to sign on unless he got one demand: Colonel Klink must ALWAYS lose. Klemperer told the writers flat out that if Klink ever came out ahead, he would quit the show. He wanted Klink to look like a total idiot and bent over backwards to make it happen.
Just one more of these lazily "researched" videos to generate clicks. In Germany Hogan's Heroes was called "Barbed Wire and Turn Tail" (not "High Heels") but it failed. Then it was renamed "A Cage full of Heroes" and dubbed with a lot of slapstick and even nonsense to make it more of a harmless funny show. For example in one episode a truck containing "fake Coca Cola" was destroyed instead of a fuel truck sabotaged. "Kalinke" (not "Kinka") was Colonel Klinks cleaning woman, not his love interest. Overall the show was a mediocre success in Germany.
Bernard Fox only played Colonel crittenton. It was another actor who played general bull Carter son-in-law. One of many mistakes you made. Showing pictures of four different men and calling them John Paul George and Ringo was another big mistake. You should have watched the show before you edited it. The show called fancy car the general bull Carter drove. he was always driven and it wasn't black and he never had a fancy car just that big German behemoth staff car.. Your story is filled with a whole lot of mistakes you should re-edit it after you watch the whole series
Way too many thumbs up for Hogan's heroes .i was born in 1958, Hogan's heroes was a stupid show. I never watched it. I thought Bob Crane was a complete jerk. So whatever happened to him. I'm sorry.😮😮😮
