Dave Brubeck was inspired to create an album based on odd time signatures during his state sponsored 1958 Eurasia trip. The track was written after the Quartet's drummer, Joe Morello, requested a song in quintuple (5/4) meter. Desmond composed the melodies on Morello's rhythms while Brubeck arranged the song. The track's name is derived from its meter. The track is written in E♭ minor and is in ternary (ABA) form. Although Brubeck was the band's leader and namesake, this amazing track is really the handiwork of Morello and Desmond. Eugene Wright, the bassist, also gets a shout out. They were a magnificent combo. Thanks Bennett and Harri.

I enjoy your input John. We used to play this in ensemble class when I was student at Berklee many years ago. Have heard of the jazz pianist, Cyrus Chestnut? We are from the same neck of the woods and graduated high school in 1981. We attended music college together. Cyrus is a great laid back guy. He is a world class musician.

I listen to a lot of Japanese jazz/funk, and I've heard several of their groups do pretty good renditions of Take Five. There is a lot of really excellent music in this genre there. Tokyo Groove Jyoshi, Foxy, Uko Saxy, The Sax Triplets, Juna Serita and a host of others, but there isn't anything better than the original.

From the 1959 album, " Time Out", this is one of the biggest selling jazz song of all time. It is written in the usual 5/4 time meter, first jazz song not written in the usual 4/4 beat or the 3/4 Waltz time. This song has been used in movies and on TV shows. This fantastic live version is much longer than the "Time Out" version. I was privileged to see Brubeck in concert in Redlands, CA back in the 90s. He was brilliant.

"West Coast Sound" is what Time magazine called it when Dave Brubeck was put on the cover. The magazine came out while the song was a cross-over hit on the pop and jazz charts along with the song "Blu Rondo al la Turk" from the Time Out album. The Brubeck Quartet were on tour with Duke Ellington, and Dave Brubeck brought the magazine to Duke Ellington's hotel room, and with tears welling up, lamented being so popular, whilst feeling "The Duke" was his legendary hero. Brubeck was the one jazz dude that had a huge popular following. Many jazz purists took issue with his popularity. Make no mistake he was a great piano player and elegant arranger. Take five is perfect example that a hit is a hit is a hit. It is timeless and will transcend all genres of music.

Dave Brubeck ended up beig a resident of Connecticut and supported live jazz locally. I saw him several times in jazz festivals, the last time he had one of his son's in the band. Fond memories. Peace

I was very fortunate to see the quartet in a full concert (in 1963}. I also caught a couple of shorter sets at the Pittsburgh Jazz festivals in the mid 1960's. Their playing was always flawless. It was a very rich era for jazz. I'm very lucky to have experienced many great musicians in those years.

Thanks HarriBest for this. I saw Brubeck in person 4 times in my life. The last time Brubeck was so old he had to be helped across the stage to his piano where he played just like old times. This was in Salt Lake City, Utah. There were over 3000 in attendance. Paul Desmond had passed away by then, Morello lost his sight as I recall, Wright was not there either. Dave Brubeck Quartet was a big part of my life, from my teen years to now.

I am not a big fan of what I call "hep jazz" (up-tempo), but this soft fusion of classical and up-tempo is beautiful. Such a nice change up review. I grew up in the 70's and 80's. Most of that spent in West Germany and we only had one FM and one AM radio station in English. Those stations played everything, giving me an appreciation of many types of music...

The main melody is in 5/4 time. One of the first in that...(For those who watched the original "Mission Impossible" TV series in the 60's, that theme song is a very close equivalent. Later on, Prog Rock groups like ELP and Pink Floyd utilized 5/4 and 7/4 time signatures.)

I would compare this to a sorbet served between dinner courses to cleanse one's palate. An excellent departure from some of the noise that passes for music today. I don't know much about jazz, but I like this as much as one enjoys a cold glass of water on a hot day. No overly-processed technology between the musicians & the audience.

This song and Unsquare Dance changed Jazz forever. Brubeck had just been in Turkey and become interested in their musics polyrythms, came home and used nonstandard time signatures in this album. This was the first jazz album to use such varied time signatures.

My introduction to jazz. I was a young girl, late '50s early '60s babysitting and played my brother-in-law's albums. The first one was "Take Five" Dave Brubeck Quartet and discovered jazz!!! Composed by Paul Desmond 1959. I read it is the biggest selling jazz song of all time, a Grammy Hall of Fame inductee.

I've been a fan since the 60's. My dad had Time Out, so I've heard the song many times throughout my life. As a guitarist, I played this many times with our jazz group. Paul Desmond's solo albums have been on a regular rotation ever since I bought 'Pure Desmond', featuring a great under rated guitarist named Ed Bickert. i loved his Latin jazz records that he put out in the late 60's. Desmond soothes my soul.

In the movie "Pleasantville", in one of the scenes in the diner, this is playing on the jukebox. Every movement, even the eye movements, is timed to the drum solo. It's one of my all time favorite bits of film editing.
