Thanks for highlighting the differences of Jesus’ genealogy between Matthew and Luke. But why does Matthew even bother? 🤔 it creates an unnecessary contention which Richard Dawkins raised.

Hi Mervin, thank you for your comment. Regarding your question, we must bear in mind that Matthew and Luke were written for slightly different purposes and to different audiences. It has been the traditional understanding that Matthew was written primarily to a Jewish audience, which explains the many Old Testament references and allusions. Luke was written to a specific person, Theophilus, who may have possibly been an influential Gentile believer (however, we can't be certain). Furthermore, it is helpful to remember that Biblical genealogies had theological significance, not just historical significance. It was not uncommon for genealogies to skip a figure or two here and there, because their intent was not to scientifically catalogue every member of the family, but to present a theological point. With this in mind, we can begin to see why the genealogies of Matthew and Luke are different. Matthew intends to to validate Jesus' royal lineage from a legal perspective according to Jewish custom, which would have been traditionally passed down through the male line i.e. Joseph. Whereas, as Ps Benny stated, Luke shows Jesus' royal lineage from a biological perspective, since Jewish custom would have been less of an issue for a Gentile audience. Both of these accounts, complement the other to show that not only was Jesus a legal royal descendant of David (Matthew) but he was a biological descendant of David (Luke). Hope this helps! ☺
