@@Gage_Brumley Ken revealed in an interview with NASCAR.com, when he looked in the car not only he saw the left lap belt fail he also saw Dale slumped toward the window and blood was pouring from all over his face.
He was the only driver to see what Dale Earnhardt looked like after that wreck I couldn’t imagine what he had been through after that ordeal and it just broke my heart
The fact that Ryan Blaney can take the same type of crash and impact at Daytona in the Summer 23 race and not only walk away but not have a major/significant concussion is incredible. It’s horrible that it took the loss of a/THE legend to have these changes made but the lives that have been saved are probably numerous!
Although he felt that he, understandably, couldn't really celebrate it in 2001, at least Michael Waltrip got another chance to celebrate a Daytona 500 win in 2003. Although rain shortened, he could properly celebrate his 2003 win, where he felt he couldn't in 2001
I can only imagine what he must've seen. I hope Dale was leaning to the right so Kenny didn't have to see all those gruesome facial injuries Dale suffered. I'd never forget that image
@@murphymoerf all he would have found was Earnhardt slumped ... because the injuries were under the flesh, Dale had cheek and chin bruises/slight lacerations . He passed from a basiclure skull fracture , which is were the neck portion of the spine meets the base of the skull.. the reason the base of his skull broke was because his head extended too far forward with too much weight attached ( helmet ) while his body was held in place with restraints.... this is the exact injury the hans device prevents... Dale had been presented a hans device at the brickyard 400 two years prior but he said it was for pussies ... therefore fate was written in the book, RIP NO 3 .
@@acrock21 Kenny revealed in an interview, 10 years ago when he dropped the net down and looked in the car he saw Dale slumped toward the window along with blood pouring all over his face, and noticed that the left lap belt failed.
@@zanemarte9877 however his skull did not crush like some people try to say. with a basilar skull fracture it is some what common to see a lot of blood coming from the mouth and nose.
@@zanemarte9877he never mentioned the lap belt. Don’t make shit up dude. He only said he knew “ Dale was dead “ but never said what he saw. He said he’d only tell dales kids what he saw if they asked
21:45 Kenny's thoughts here offer a poignant glimpse at an alternate world where Dale ended up being okay. Really hurts to hear him talking about how their conversation might've gone.
I've always found it remarkable that Ken Schrader has NEVER spoken about the details of what he saw when he dropped that window net and saw Dale. I think many years later he has only stated that he knew Dale was dead but that's it. He's never gone in detail and he's kind of the keeper of the flame in that regard. It's best that fans around the world never saw pictures and never knew the horrific details of what was seen. That Earnhardt is remembered for the life he had and the icon he was and not the unfortunate end he met. I wouldn't want my lasting image of a larger than life sporting icon like Dale Earnhardt to be an image of him sitting dead inside the race car.
It’s been 19 years since then. I have a feeling dale had something to do with Ryan Newman surviving his wreck yesterday and when Jr and his family were in that plane crash.
My first NASCAR race seen live was the Pocono 500 in 2003. Never forget the huge memorial to Dale outside the front entrance of Pocono two years after the accident, flowers pictures, written letters, etc. And like most of us thought that day...meh just hit the wall, he'll be OK....only to find out the impact almost took his head off....thanks to Dale, many lives may have been saved afterwards. RIP
I remember watching this on tv. The girl I was dating dad and I were watching. After the race he said as he is ok, he is in the trailer changing the rules. He hated Earnhardt. He cried like a baby when it was announced.
That reminds me of my friend’s grandma she was talking about how much she hates Dale Earnhardt she then got quiet and when she heard he died she couldn’t do anything but cry and then she said I stopped watching racing after that
17:33 “If they don’t do something to these cars, it’s gonna end up killing somebody.” He knew that these cars were dangerous and he was the only one who knew that and wanted something done to make them safe. Even after they lost Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr. & Tony Roper, they did nothing about the cars that would’ve saved lives. The only reason he kept racing was because winning was worth it. Set aside how the sport has been ruined over the last 15 years, just think about if this wreck never happened or it happened to someone else. Now think about the possibility of guys like Kurt Busch, Dale Jr., Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson, Or Denny Hamlin being killed if that wreck happened to Andy Houston or Stacy Compton. No matter how you see it, this wreck changed our sport forever.
I'm 31 but I miss Dale Earnhardt Senior. He was my Dad and Step dads favorite driver. I became a Jeff Gordon fan just because he was Dale Seniors' biggest rival lol. looking back I respect and admire Dale Senior more than any other rival of my favorite Sports teams. As I to older I became a pretty big Dale Junior fan, but Jeff was still my overall favorite until he retired.
Even if you didn't like Dale the last thing anyone was hoping for was for him to parish on the track. It was arguably the darkest day in NASCAR in years up to that point. 3 years before at least he finally won the race at least once.
Most critics and internet says it all. The most talked about race of the year back in 2001 (before darkness and tragedies) could had been the GREATEST. No one and I mean no one cannot replied on the goat of NASCAR but the late Dale Earnhardt Sr himself. We love you Dale (1951-2001)

Ken Schrader is the best. They were there quick, But just quicker yea. TELL ME WHAT THE DEAL IS I was just down there and, So then he told me. 🤣🤣🤣 Me and my dad say that to each other all the time
no it’s was the fact that his seatbelt broke at the moment of impact and cause his body to lunge forward then Kenny hit hit mmm causing his body to also get jerked to the left not 100% sure if this is correct but something along those lines
No one is to blame racing is an dangerous sport. It could have been reversed with Dale getting into Sterling for example and probably had the same outcome. Point is that no one is to blame it just happens those threat letters he got was uncalled for. But the Earnhardt fans wanted to blame him just to look for an escape goat.
I know there are some conspiracy theories about how he died. My one is that he died before the crash of carbon dioxide poisoning. I've seen him survive crashes worse than that at Daytona.
