Roger Federer's 2017 season is often argued to be one of his best. Especially because when he got the chance to play his arch rival, Nadal, he completely dismantled him; it was never a competition. And on one specific meeting, Federer showed tennis at a level we have never seen from him. A level that even in his prime 2006 season, he was never able to produce.

The Indian Wells match against Nadal was the best I had seen Federer play..my other favorite was the 2005 US Open Win against Aggasi and Aggasi played really well for a 35 year old back then. Federer made changes to his backhand but unfortunately could be to late in his career but I am glad he had made the alteration. Federer has struggled during the early years of the last decade. Courts were slowing up which did not suit Federers style of play which was the go to style back when Federer started out. Attacking serve and volley which he perfected. This change in court speeds for extra tv coverage and money allowed the likes of Nadal Djokoviv and Murray exceptional players to hit more balls with top spin to Federer's one handed backhand on the slowed up courts which he struggled with and especially on the slowest surface which is clay. If he had made the alteration back then he would have won the grand slams he won in 2017 and 2018 back then plus a few more and a couple of French Opens which I think why he is the goat in my opinion. He has adapted the game old gen and to modern tennis but the game has become for physical too due to slower courts which will put more strain on these older players hence why they get injured again as soon as they make a return..looking froward to seeing what this new decade has in place for us.

Well, come on, let's get real here - look at Nadal's stats vs. Roger and Nole on any surface other than clay since 2014. He is 1-15. He's 0-8 vs. Nole and 1-7 vs. Roger. If that was Roger's record vs. his 2 biggest opponents the media would be calling for him to retire. I chose 2014 because that's the year Roger changed his racket to the bigger head. The AO was Roger's first Slam with the new racket and he lost to Nadal in the SF. Since then Roger has only lost to Nadal 1 time - on clay at the 2019 RG. Otherwise he's 7-2 vs. Nadal since 2014 when he changed rackets. Overall Nadal, since the beginning of the 2014 season Nadal's overall record against Roger & Nole is 7-19 (5-12 vs. Djokovic, 2-7 vs Roger) with all 6 wins coming on clay. NOT a good record for someone trying to lay claim to the GOAT tile vs. his 2 greatest opponents. Hell, until the 2019 Wimbledon SF Nadal hadn't even broken Roger's serve since the 1st game of the 5th set of the 2017 AO final. Now THAT is truly scary. I've said it for a decade - Nadal is the King of Clay and that's about it. If you look at his last 4 Grand Slam wins - he only played 3 top 10 players and all 3 times that player was in the final (Medvedev at the US Open 2019, Thiem are RG 2019 and Djokovic at RG 2020) in 27 matches and had a bye in one match. The average ranking of players he beat hovers somewhere around 62. Sure he just drubbed Nole at RG - but again, it's clay and clay isn't Nole's best surface. The last time Nadal had to play more than 3 Top 20 players to win a Slam was the 2019 RG - Nishikori in the QF, Roger in the SF and Thiem in the Finals. No offense to Nadal, but he hasn't exactly had the most difficult draws. And the 2019 US Open he won playing on 6 matches, so again, he's not exactly playing the cream of the crop all the time so when he gets to Roger and Nole he's used to being able to easily intimidate his opponents and he can't do that with those 2. Having said all of that, my point is - Nadal isn't "great" on hard courts or grass. He's just very good. Against the rest of the players that's good enough to win Slams. Against Roger and Nole - it ain't gonna get the job done anymore. Not if he continues with the same game plan he's had his entire career. Roger, more than any of the 3, can change his game and play any style against any player out there. Nadal has no Plan B. Actually, Djokovic doesn't either but he rarely needs one against Roger and Nadal. He just waits for Roger's aggression to generate enough errors that he wins the match (See Wimbledons 2019, 2015, 2014 - LOL!). With Nadal he just out-hits and out-defends him. And therein lies Nadal's biggest problem - of the 3 he's the least aggressive and the most predictable.

@rajarshighosh4821
@rajarshighosh4821 3 года назад
@@SHVideografie so you are saying that Djokovic not participating in the US Open 2017 and Federer losing in the early rounds is Nadal's fault? In 2019 US Open, Djokovic withdrew due to a shoulder injury and Federer again lost early. Even that is Nadal's fault. Nadal has won multiple grand slams on hard courts and grass while Federer and Djokovic have won solitary Grand Slam on clay. Nobody has said that Nadal is fabulous on hard and grass courts but he is competitive. He has been to numerous Grand Slam finals on these surfaces.
@SHVideografie
@SHVideografie 3 года назад
@@rajarshighosh4821Were am I saying it's Djokovic's and Federer's fault? Nadals hardcourt slams are legitimate. All he says is that Federer and Djokovic have Nadal's number big time when it comes to non clay surfaces sonce 2014 and he's correct. This is pretty much an argument against Nadal's GOAT claim that every Rafa fan is holding on atm. It's not that simple.
@rajarshighosh4821
@rajarshighosh4821 3 года назад
@@SHVideografie well you don't need to be an expert to see that. Nadal's performance against Federer and Djokovic on non-clay surfaces has been poor, to say the least. The same argument that exists for Federer and Djokovic in terms of them winning more on clay had Nadal not been around, is applicable to Nadal in terms of him winning more on non-clay surfaces had the other two not been around.

@kevinchang8090
@kevinchang8090 3 года назад
fed switched to a slightly larger headsize racket and started hitting his backhand with more confidence, taking it early and on the rise. as a result, he had an amazing 2017 and in particular was able to conquer his personal demon in nadal, who always dominated their matchup with his heavy topspin, high bouncing lefty forehand targeting federer's one handed backhand. Fed was looking like he was stagnating before he made these changes, and so when he returned from injury and dominated 2017 with this new style, people came up with a name for it, they called him "Neo-federer" since he seemed to have reinvented his game.
