On June 3, 1962, Atlanta was stunned by the news that a plane carrying 106 of its citizens had crashed on take-off at Orly Airfield near Paris, France. This GPB special is their story - the story of who they are, what brought them together in death, how a city was torn apart by their losses, and how that city was changed by the determination to honor them.
Original Air Date: 2001

I still remember all the talk of this when I was growing up. My dad had friends who lost relatives on that plane. It was a very sad day but also a day we Atlantans should always remember, especially the art community.

Just wondering, was this the plane crash that got Malcolm X in trouble by his leader for saying, "the chickens has come home to roost"?

Yes. He at least was pleased at the news.

It was the aftermath of the JFK assassination that prompted Malcolm X to make that statement...

Not talking about tragedies like death in a plane crash outside of official memorials was just how people dealt with trauma at that time.

Atlanta has never had a population of a million people unless the metro area is counted and in 1962 the metro area would be hard pressed to have a million people

@dawgyinafield In my written statement I wrote 31 words, none were city. I wrote metro twice, never a misspelling for metro or any other word. Also I never edited my statement. I think we were agreeing mostly on the same while on the same wave length.

As the great EL HAJJ MALIK EL SHABAZZ (MALCOLM X) stated as well as by EVANGELIST BILLY GRAHAM: "THIS IS GOD'S JUDGEMENT ON AMERICA!!"

From Wikipedia: On December 1, 1963, when asked to comment on the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X said that it was a case of "chickens coming home to roost." ... and then: Throughout 1964, his conflict with the Nation of Islam intensified, and he was repeatedly sent death threats. On February 21, 1965, he was assassinated in New York City. More homeward-bound chickens. More roosting. WHOSE/WHAT'S JUDGEMENT ON WHOM/WHAT?
