Cristiano Ronaldo once again underlined his worth in Europe's elite competition as his hat-trick overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit against Atletico Madrid to send Juventus into the Champions League last eight.
The fans of the Turin club had yet to see their £99m summer signing produce the sort of displays in Europe that helped Real Madrid to four Champions League titles in five seasons, but that all changed on a thrilling night inside the Juventus Stadium.
Having brought the tie level with two typical headers, Ronaldo capped off another remarkable performance and entered Juventus folklore when he smashed in the tie-winner from the spot four minutes from time, after Federico Bernardeschi had been fouled in the area.
It was his 124th goal in the Champions League and eighth hat-trick in the competition. The home fans erupted on the final whistle and the players rushed to Ronaldo.

@Mani Kantan the champions league knockout stage have 2 legs except the final. Juventus lost the first leg 0-2 Atletico Madrid. Haters were criticizing Ronaldo for doing the gesture showing he won 5 UCL(he raise his hands with 5 fingers and shake it on his chest). I think it's because Simeone celebrated the first goal with the gesture where he made a round-looking like thing with his fingers and shake it under his waist. Ronaldo responded in the press conference saying he won 5 UCL while Atletico Madrid won zero and said "See you in the second leg". Making it look like he is going to beat them this time

The context of this match is what makes it such an incredible story to have witnessed. Athletico Madrid under Simeone being one of the most defensive sides in the world. Really difficult to score against. Juventus bringing in Ronaldo specifically aiming big in the UCL. Yet Juve's goal difference not getting any better. Even in SerieA they were winning like 1-0, 2-1 kind of scores. So when Juve got behind for 2 goals to Athletico Madrid, it was really difficult to believe that Juve would comeback scoring three goals back. And that was why the ATM fans were also so confident about. And the fact that that very moment Ronaldo had the self belief to challenge the opposition fans, was something unbelievable. And to do exactly what he said. That's GOAT material out there. Not just the three goals, the number of crosses he gave in that match. When Ronaldo is made to feel important in the team, he just owns the game like anything. I think it is that support that he is lacking now.

What Ronaldo is lacking now is the ability to comprehend that his game has got to change if he still wants to play in Europe. He can’t just expect to sprint like he did in his 20’s and early 30’s, he can’t expect teammates to give him threw balls every time when he can’t reach them at this point in his career, he can’t expect everyone to play off of him when he isn’t that man anymore. Zlatan is 39 and he plays exactly the same position as Ronaldo but with more effectiveness! He guards the ball waiting for the team to go up, he plays with his back to the goal, which at his age he just needs strength and endurance to play that style effectively! Ronaldo what’s to sprint every single time and defenders nowadays laugh at that because he can’t just sprint threw them like he used to, he demands crosses from his teammates even though he can’t jump like he used to. Ronaldo needs to understand that he needs to play effective football, not the “pass me and let me do all the shooting” football, he isn’t that effective anymore. Messi won a world championship by changing his game and deferring more to others than sprint threw 3-4 guys himself, fans of Ronaldo don’t tell him this, his family don’t tell him this, his managers and people that just want to feed off his money don’t tell him this. That’s why Ronaldo is leaving Europe, he prefers having people telling him how good he is when in the present day he isn’t, instead of playing in europe and adapting his style to make a good transition into his retirement.

Damn... I'm a 3rd generation juventus fan from Italy, over the years we have seen incredible players - Del Piero, Trezeguet, Zlatan, Pirlo, Zidane, Tevez, Cannavaro, Buffon, Inzaghi, Nedved, Platini, Baggio, etc... - not gonna rank them in terms of how good they were, wouldn't be fair. I have to say however, I had never seen a player that showed so much dominance in games like Ronaldo did. If he was in a good day he was capable to completely crush defenses on his own. I will sorely miss him, but that's life. Players come and go, teams stay forever. But thank you Cristiano, my only regret is that you didn't come earlier. When we had a midfield made of Pirlo, Pogba, Vidal and Marchisio at their prime, with Pirlo making passes to him, he would have easily scored 50 goals per season. Thanks and good luck at Man U Cris.
