Dear Kristy I'm so sad that some people use their right to speak as a way to trash what someone else give so willingly and lovingly. For everyone of those people there's many many more that love the joy and knowledge you spread.
One of the things that has helped me overcome fear is using a Buddha Board. My husband got me one for Christmas and I thought I will never use it. But I warm up with it. Just one brush and water on a board. No paint. I can try compositions without ruining my paper. It fades after five minutes but it is such a freeing way to paint.
Hi! I'm a traditional and art quilter. I teach my students these are the rules. Learn them so that not IF you break them, but WHEN you break them, and I hope you will, you will know what to expect ... a crazy, maybe messy, but sometimes delightful result. Making my own foray into a different medium ... watercolor. Love you! Love your attitude. Love, love, love!
You are an absolute delight!!! I get paralyzed sometimes getting overwhelmed by the rules and wanting to paint loose but then my mind wants to nitpick details. Your videos emphasize the joy in putting paint to paper without the baggage. ♥️♥️♥️

My painting tutor used to say the only reason she was telling us the rules was so we knew how to break them and what effect it would have on our work. 😊 I love the colours in this rose! 😁 ❤️
Hello! Watching in the UK, recovering from double sepsis and a spinal fracture, my fourth in fact. I have only just found you, and I am in love with you and your channel! I used to paint watercolour years ago. These days I do needlework, resin craft and other three dimensional crafts. But I miss the whole process of painting flowers and plants. One method I used was to look in my beautiful thrifted book of watercolour botanical images, learn and understand the flower’s structures, then I would translate that perfect, literal representation into a loose, watery, airy, dynamic painting. But no way near as amazingly as you do! That’s first rose just GREW out of the page, seemingly in seconds! Stunning! Your whole ethos of nothing being ‘wrong’ amongst giving genuine, helpful hints and instruction is so refreshing! Thank you, I am here to stay and hope to get the paints back out. While stuck in this rest state, Hmmmm….do they go ‘off’ ? Is this an excuse to go paint shopping? Hmm, might have to watch the seven best paint brands and hope we get them here too!
Well first and foremost I wish you a smooth recovery. I do also wish you’ve already got those paints out and are diving back in!! So grateful you are here and excited to think this channel might be part of your watercolor comeback!!
@@KristyRice hi, Kristy. I replied a couple of days ago but must have forgotten to enter! I have painted something!! I just wanted to thank you as it’s down to you that I got my paints out again, and I loved it so much. I am now following you on Instagram, amd tagged you in my post about the painting. I promise not to tag you in all my paintings! But I just wanted to show you the first one because it is your videos and words that encouraged me to start again. I have some pastel paints on the way, and a watercolour block as on,y ever used loose paper and they do curl a lot even if you ore-soak and I like to mix up techniques, and paint wet on wet and wet on dry. Anyway, just had thank you! You’ve made me very happy!
Starting out, the rules broke me, so I appreciate learning to break them right back 😌 Over the weekend I gave in to temptation and went and bought the dagger brush on Etsy, then my amazing wife bought me the book... Now to work through the pile of your other things taking up my books wishlist 😂
I just discovered you on RU-vid and you have changed my life! I’ve been using watercolours for about two years and have watched hundreds of tutorials. But they were all so serious and made me think watercolour is so “precious” and full of rules. I’ve now seen about the of your videos and I now feel that it should be fun, experimental and not “precious”! Love your style, it’s totally changed my perception.
I am definitely going to try this. Yay🤗 Also, I just mentioned your brush set to my husband and that I hadn’t been able to find them to order from Amazon. Boom 💥, he finds them his first try and say “ Happy Birthday “ the set will be here day after your Bday 🥳🤩🥰
Oh I just love your rose it’s so beautiful ❤ I am a rule breaker, always want to do things ”my way”. That’s not always a good thing, sometimes it is a heavy road. But sometimes it is kind of rewarding too. And I LOVE your rose… 🌹🥀
You need to learn the rules so you know when to break them to your painting's advantage. Tonal value is key to any art. In A La Prima technique I think you start dark to light.
Love your style. I’m new to watercolor and I painted Christmas card this year and loved them. That sucks because every single thing I’ve painted since, I have hated! Lol, not fun when that happens. Maybe I’ll break some rules and see what I can learn.
Love your attitude,,, start dark, can always lighten if you choose. It’s your art, a great place to follow your instincts with no rules holding you back!! You never know what you’re going to get but it’s so much fun!!
Love the video, can't wait to try. I am trying my hand finally to try loose flowers etc. Your videos help me break the rules and I learn great techniques and info on paper, paints and brushes. The Dagger!! Who knew?? Love you! XOXOXO
Wow, Kristy, I was blown away when I saw the paint box you are using for your paints! I had completely forgotten about my first watercolor paints but in a flash it came back! I had the Kopy Kat paints! My first paintbox. 🙂 I love breaking rules too! Thanks a bunch🎨🌞
This makes me think of your advice to “find your weird” when you’ve talked about art style. I pretty much always start dark because I prefer bold, opaque color. Maybe watercolor “shouldn’t” be my preferred medium, but it works for me 😇
Kristy, I can’t find your paint brush set on Amazon, even through your website. Can you help me with that? Love your work and style. ❤️. Pia. Thank you.
Hi Kristy, I have a technical question with which I hope (or should I say know🤪) you can help me☺️. Imagine I am working in one of your books on a wisteria e.g. with all those little flowers and wanting to give them the colours purple and pink while they are wet (so wet in wet). Do I take one flower at a time and colour it purple, then rinse my brush and add the pink... Or do I colour all the little flowers purple one after the other, then make them all wet again and add the pink? Or do you use two identical brushes to avoid the constant rinsing after every single flower? I kind of struggle with this🤭😆. Greetings from Gerda🌷
Amazing question. And I think the answer lies in whether or not you’re doing a more realistic style or a more modern, loose watercolor style. If you’re aiming for more realistic I would probably paint each little flower one at a time starting with the first layer and then dropping in the second color layer after layer. For a more loose, modern watercolor style you might be using a bigger brush and adding say pink first over several flowers at a time, going outside the lines of your sketch for example and then while that is all wet dropping in the second color. You could then let that layer dry and go back over with more intense pinks and purples again in a wet on wet style. I know that’s a lot of information but hopefully it was helpful. Feel free to ask anymore questions you might have :-)
@@KristyRice thank you for your elaborate answer! I said it before, but somehow my answer keeps disappearing here🤷🏻♀️. In the last part of your answer you say you let it dry again to later come back with more colour in a wet in wet style. But how do you do that when everything has already dried? That is what I am struggling with it. I bought your Dutch book by the way. Look forward to start in it🙂. Gerda🌷
Hi from London , just found you Kristy and lovin your style . Is it possible to get your brush set in this Country ? Checked out Amazon GB and it’s a no go .Thanks
Hi, I’m really enjoying your channel, but I can’t find your brushes on Amazon. The first time I clicked on the link, they were there, then when I went back- I can’t find them! Any suggestions? Thanks! Love your rose!
I’m having trouble finding your brush set on Amazon, even when I follow the link from your site. Would you mind double-checking with Amazon that they have stock to sell? Thank you!
