On Saturday, June 15, 2024, we came together with Afzal Mahmood to learn about “The Day of Hajj.” The Hajj - an annual pilgrimage to Mecca, in Saudi Arabia - is considered one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The five-day event begins on the 7th day of Dhū al-Hijjah (the last month of the Islamic lunar year). On the second day - “The Day of Hajj,” also known as “The Day of Arafah” - Muslim pilgrims visit the site of one of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) final sermons, the Plain of Arafat.
Afzal came to Canada from Pakistan in 1997 with a Master’s degree in Agriculture. In 2000, he founded a commercial and industrial pest company serving the Greater Vancouver area, and retired 15 years later. He regularly attends the Baitur Rahman mosque in Delta, where he lives near to his four sons. Afzal completed the Hajj in 2004, and will share some of his understandings and experiences of the journey.
