In 1833 the Garanock broke through into the coal mines on the misk and ran dry for over a mile until the tide came in and the air was forced out of the tunnels creating sand and water geysers, large chasms, etc. In 1852 the Earl of Eglinton purchased the land, dug a canal across the top of the loop and drained the mines.
