Love your videos, but you made a huge mistake in this one! The side with the strip mall sucks, but the other side… you didn’t walk far enough! 4 more minutes that direction leads to a super walkable area with some top tier restaurants, a Whole Foods, a dine in theater. It’s called the boro. I use that station all the time on the weekends to grab ramen in the boro, and I exit on the side where you shot those office buildings. It’s super walkable and pedestrian friendly.
oh man! I walked from a bus stop on Greensboro near the One Life and didn't even notice the boro, I google mapped it and it looks like one of those "islands of walkability you find all around NOVA. Sorry, pinned your comment! Thanks for watching.
TRue, but to be honest, a great transit system needs to have stations that have great areas right next to the station. Just four stations down, Arlington is way better
Most of the Metro stations do, in fact, have restrooms - but getting access to them is a pain because the system wasn't really designed for public restroom access. White Flint is one that comes to mind with a visible restroom on the mezzanine - others are accessed through the Fire Equipment door that the station manager usually has to unlock. The station managers are supposed to grant access to the restrooms whenever requested.
The busses are more centralized at the Tyson's station that's half a mile away with some also at Sprint Hill that's a bit over half a mile the other way. Basically doesn't make sense to serve this station - the put the connections at the other two. This one is at the mid point and is mainly there to provide direct Metro access to the planned development.
During rush hour, silver line sees a ton of people between Arlington and Tysons. Trains aren't crowded but they are very well utilized. I'm glad Fairfax County wants to develop Tysons more, but I feel like Fairfax isn't willing to go all in. Arlington knows how to make a really high quality walkable area, Fairfax needs to learn from that. Some part of me doubts how well Fairfax will do considering nothing is being done to downsize the mega 8 lane stroad that is Leesburg Pike, any of the I-495 interchanges, or the massive amount of parking. (thankfully they're getting rid of that Chain Bridge Rd-Leesburg Pike interchange though)
The traffic will really suck on Rt 7 when they start to redevelop those strip malls by the station. Almost all of the Silver Line stations besides Wiehle Reston are white elephants.
We shall see, Arlington saw traffic decrease even during population increase, partly due to metro and lots of dense. www.arlingtonva.us/files/sharedassets/public/v/1/projects/documents/historic-traffic-counts.pdf
@@sammymarrco47 I sometimes drive into Ballston during rush hour and traffic in Arlington is really not that bad while transit usage is super high. Tysons needs to do the same thing by making the area walkable. But I reckon Tysons traffic will still suffer regardless. Fairfax wants to cram 100,000 residents and 200,000 jobs, which is about double the entire Rosslyn-Ballston corridor. Nevertheless, traffic will only get better with more improvements for walkability and transit. Plus, all those housing units needs to be built somewhere. Better next to a metro stop than a sprawling suburb
I've seen them twice in the span of a year, myself. Once last November at the Eccles Theatre and the other at the Kenley Auditorium in Layton, UT. And yes, before you ask, UTA is my home system.
Binge watching your videos. I use DC area transit frequently and am a transit advocate. Hopefully the purple line gives you some more content. You should do some videos on the ongoing construction of the purple line and the rebuilding of stations like Silver Spring. Nice channel!
"Binge watching your videos" this is a huge complement, thanks! if I graduate on time (2027) i'll still be able to see purple line open (as ill leave DMV for school) that's how long it is!
yeah, like its sterile in a bad way and has little foot traffic, not a fan but maybe its a good start. The Arlington corridor is similar but more lived in and "real" feeling.
What happened on February 11, 2020? that's a random just before lockdowns Tuesday. Also no busses at National Airport is odd as even when there is usually a rail connection to an airport you still have a few bus routes to nearby industrial or something (I think PHL has a bus to 69th St). I guess Alexandria is basically a shoulder station that it makes sense to dump people there. VRE does want to expand Crystal City as well so there's also good reason there even though there is a decent gap between BLYL and ORSV combined sections that could easily be-explored to fully deinterline the blue line of the Bloop option is the chosen alternative)
I go through Greensboro a lot so it’s definitely not a forgettable station for me! Good video, regardless! I feel like a lot of Metro enthusiasts may have their own most forgettable station, usually not on the line they use most often. Mine was Van Ness-UDC until I actually stopped there and got lunch. Now my most forgettable station is… well… I can’t remember. Nice video, glad to see Greensboro is getting some attention!
Yes and no… there are 6 stations with no regular bus service, 8 if you count the airports: Greensboro, Arlington Cemetery, Capitol South, Federal Center SW, Judiciary Square and NoMa. Judiciary and NoMa can be technicalities, as there is bus service within one block of these stations’ entrances.
yeah I was going by wmata's bus maps like these - www.wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/upload/station_bus_maps/pdfs/WEB_NoMa-Gallaudet%20U_Mezz_Sep%202021.pdf www.wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/upload/station_bus_maps/pdfs/WEB_JudiciarySq_Mezz_Dec%202021.pdf wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/upload/station_bus_maps/pdfs/WEB_Federal%20Center_Mezz_Dec%202021.pdf wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/upload/station_bus_maps/pdfs/WEB_CapitolSouth_Mezz_Sep%202021.pdf
WMATA made an over ambitious move on making this station but they are also smart seeing the potential Tysons still has. I think this station will be Top 15 in most popular once the area is redeveloped.
But not smart enough to put express tracks between the Dulles and East Falls Chruch segment. In a document they made not too long ago, they basically said they forgot to include express tracks when designing the extension....
I also think it's stupid that no Metrobus service is provided to the stations beyond Tyson's Park West. All other stations in the system (except for the ones he mentioned and Springfield) is served by Metrobus in varying degrees.
I would disagree with the "forgettable" label. Greensboro is notable for its strange topography and location. To me, the most forgettable is either Potomac Ave or Eastern Market. Those are great stations, but they are just so generic...
I agree with you on the topography. It’s certainly unique. I’d argue Spring Hill is less memorable than Greensboro simply because of the topography! But I can very much see, if you’re riding out towards Dulles Airport, how all those extra Tysons stops could easily blend together!
haha i'd say spring hill is more memorable bc the land use is SO BAD. - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cOMO3DvjDPY.htmlfeature=shared&t=400
yeah I was a bit surprised but traffic near the airport is always a bit hectic so im sure the airport doesnt want more of them. Plus most people would just use the metro anyway.
DCA USED to have Metrobus service provided to them up until about 5 years ago. The 13A and 13B buses were discontinued and replaced by the 10N bus that was also cut due to low ridership. Similar to what they did with the 5A (which is also stupid) and the B30.
where did you get off, I showed the closest stops in the video, there's also a stop on Greensboro Drive near one life that aint too far! Just no official buses on Wmata's site. www.wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/upload/station_bus_maps/pdfs/WMA_PST_Greensboro_Mezz_200306.pdf
@@sammymarrco47 I think he might have taken a Fairfax Connector bus. They have a bunch of routes nearby. In general, Tyson's Corner is served by 4 different bus systems: WMATA Metrobus (only to Tyson's Park West), Fairfax Connector (all over the city), PRTC Omniride, and LCT.
The whole Silver Line thing is discouraging. Phase I opened a decade ago and they've barely changed anything. What are they waiting for? And what was the point of building Phase 2 so quickly after Phase 1 when all the new station areas are terrible (there is nothing around them) and it will take at least another decade to redevelep those areas? Way to flush 8 billion, Virginia.
The same thing happened in Arlington, it look a few decades for that orange line corridor to really densify, and they're still in the process but opponents are not making it easy to build more there. The SL 1 stations are just starting, check out my SL video from like a month ago. McLean, Greensboro and WRE all have some amount of development with more slated for the future! Innovation C, Ashburn and Reston Town center all have plans for something around them, it will take time though.
