The tortilla flats didn’t get their name from a novel, there are many other “FLATS” gangs in LA county. The original flats are the Primera Flats from East LA, there are also the Cuatro Flats as well. These gangs go back to the late 1930s and the neighborhoods where they lived in East LA was nicknamed “the Flats” for the house design and street design. In the early 60s a few flats gang members from East LA moved out to Compton with their families, and started a new flats gang out there. In their neighborhood there was a taco and tortilla shop where everyone hung out, so their name became the Compton vario “Tortilla Flats!”
