In appreciation for all the work Brian has been doing with us in the last few weeks, and he is not even a beekeeper yet, I wanted to gift him an established colony for him to begin his beekeeping journey. On this video we transfer some bees into the boxes he brought to me. Of course, I'm going to include a few more topics as well because I just can't help myself and I hope you enjoy watching. Thank you all so much for taking the time to watch and leave your comments as I love sharing my thoughts and actions with you. God's peace to all.
Mr. Ed

I knew about beekeeping in general, but I have learned quite a bit watching your videos. But really, I watch people's videos because of their personalities.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Месяц назад
One of the main reasons I post videos about bees is to show just how much fun it is to be a part of their way of being. That being said, the joy each one of us are capable of expressing in the way we live our life, should be shared so that those who have not yet been able to do so can see for themselves it is an achievable goal. Thank you so much for following along with my adventures and sharing my happiness. God's peace Ron. Mr. Ed

@@JeffHorchoff Thanks for the reply Mr. Ed. I love the joy that you get from the process. I do have a question though. I see you cleaning out the equipment after uncapping and spinning. We had a pressure washer in the army that put out a jet of high pressure steam. It ate through gunk and muck, but it didn't leave much moisture after. It evaporated. Would something like that clean it faster and sanitize it? Have a great day.

I'm not a bee keeper, before I started watching your videos I knew nothing about beekeeping. Your presenting style and persona on camera is just so inviting, and the good humour you show in these videos make them a pleasure to watch. And obviously it helps that beekeeping is such an interesting topic.

I planted a garden of catnip. The little flowers are blooming profusely and covered in several different species of bees. I'm so mesmerized watching them all. From honey bees, bumblebees, mason bees, and i even have a gigantic carpenter bee that drilled a hole into an old wooden bed rail & made a nest.😊 Sending positivity and prayers for blessings to Jeff & the crew & anyone reading. 🙌 Dear God, please bless the bees too!🐝 🙏Amen Watching from northern Indiana

Mr. Ed, I recently moved to your area, and am a 3rd year beekeeper. From watching your videos over the past several years, it would seem that you enjoy recruiting friends to help in your apiary during the flows - I’d love the opportunity to join sometime, as the exposure to your operation and knowledge gained from the experience would be worth its weight in gold (honey, of course😊) to a newer beekeeper like me. If you’re open to it, please send me a message on how to best contact you. Finally, thank you for taking the time to make these videos - I know you do it purely because of your love of bees (and all of God’s beautiful creatures), but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a tremendous investment of your time and resources, so thank you nonetheless. Best wishes to you and yours.

Mr. ED you are a superior keeper with mostly superior queens that can perform well for years, too many bee Gods are making inferior queens that need to bee replaced every year or two because they are using the wrong egg, the worker egg is smaller than the egg laid by the queen in a swarm cell, keep up the good work!

Real friends who we share a hobby and now real fellowship as we help each other. Oh the stories we can share.. 😂 as nothing runs smoothly or perfect.. but we laugh at our foibles.. trials and tribulations. This has become the best part of the hobby! After 5 years, I have only 4 colonies/hives which is about right for me. Its a bit of work, but satisfying (even when we don't harvest or lose the occasional colony) Can't imagine 200+ hives.. 😮 Thanks again..!!!! #GodLovesAll #GoldenRule #Faith #Family #Fellowship

Hey Jeff ! Got a question, several questions, one , do you use your refractometor before you extract , even though most of your frames seem fully capped ? Secondly, watched Bob Binnie explain that drying honey with fans and a good dehumidifier still pulls moisture out of wet honey even if it’s capped . Here in coastal central Florida our humidity is usually high all summer . And we put our boxes of honey under fans for 3 days and that brings the viscosity from let’s say 19.5 down to 16-17 . Didn’t notice if you use fans or not or if your readings are already below 18.6 ? Mr. Binnie had 45-50 barrels that fermented on him and was in a rescue mode but shared with us all some good things not to do ! That’s an honest , humble man ! Love your videos , pick up a lot of tips from your adventures! We’ve always had great harvests with excluders on as well ! Thanks again , Mrs.Bees Honey
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Месяц назад
To bee honest, I never check the moisture content of the honey before extracting. I do run dehumidifiers and fans for at least 2 days before extracting, and continue the dehumidifiers after until all the honey is in the drums sealed. As successful as the excluders were, I will continue that practice for sure. By the way, I love Bob too. Thanks for watching. God's peace Edward. Mr. Ed
@garyRt23Bees
@garyRt23Bees Месяц назад
I am not a fan of metal excluders though because the wires can get bent leaving a gap the queen can pass thru. It is not normal but this is one case I prefer plastic ones. I did another removal last week and got 4 gallons out of it. Straight out of the hive it tested 15.5% moisture content.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Месяц назад
So far, I do not have a problem with them. I can understand what you are saying about them bending, so I will remember that for the future. Loved the video but, I cringed a little at the idea of putting out freshly spun honeycomb to be cleaned out by robber bees that close to other hives. From everything I've learned it's like inviting trouble for all the other colonies, especially in a dearth. I hope you show if Brians bees made out ok after being disturbed that much then being hit by all that robbing pressure. They wouldn't have even had a chance to get their defenses set up yet. I'm thinking about swimming across the Pacific ocean right now 😂😮 you're selling twenty frames for 360 NZ dollars 😮 man it costing me 340 dollars for a five frame mated nuc from a Christchurch Carniolan breeder over here😂 that's it, I'm emigrating 😂 wow, that's a great deal. Fortunately we now have a Carniolan breeder in the south island and it's a one time experience because I'll be breeding my own queens ( our bee's in central Otago are either Italian or Italian/ dark British hybrids and they're grumpy 😂) so excited to see how these Carniolan hives are going to go, I'm in the mountains so it's a little colder than most of New Zealand in spring and early summer and way hotter in summer when our thyme nectar flow starts. Looks like you guys are having fun 👍👋

To tell you the truth, I'd love to be a beekeeper in New Zealand. I probably have a romantic ideal of how it is to be one there, but you have such a beautiful country. However, regardless of where we are as beekeepers, we truly are blessed to be able to work with one of God's wonderful creations. All the best towards your journey and experiences as a beekeeper....especially in New Zealand. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Currently it's minus 4 Celsius and I've been working on the new apairy site which means digging old dog rose brambles out by hand with a pick axe and shovel because it's a remote site with no vehicle access but nice view of the mountains though, and it's surrounded by European elderberry bushes, dog rose brambles and common thyme so it smells nice😆👋 if you want the best apairy spots sometimes you gotta go into places no other beekeeper in their right mind would even look at😆 God bless, can't wait to see your next video👍

Hey Mr. Ed. Do you think the hive could be queen less, Did you happen too see any eggs, Might be a good Idea to put him a frame of fresh eggs out of another hive to see if they start building a cell, thats one thing i try when I can't find the queen and don't find eggs. Have a bless Day

Thank you for sharing your experience with the honey excluders,,,,,, I mean queen excluders. A great share to settle the debate, your thoughts are appreciated. We can trust what you say. Watching from outside the US. Truth is such a great way to live life. It's hard to understand the attraction to listening to lies. The Lord works in mysterious ways. Seems now, lies are OK.

@JeffHorchoff 25 дней назад
You are very welcome. For years I have been hesitant about using them, but after losing so much drawn comb to wax moths because the queen laid in our honey supers, I gave it a try. And yes, I will continue doing so in the future. In this case I don't think it is a matter of "lies" that color the picture for so many beekeepers, rather, it comes down to personal choices on how to keep ones own bees. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. Jeff . It’s dearth time? Does that mean it’s time to feed pollen patties and sugar syrup? If so from now till about when? Next spring? 😮
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Месяц назад
During the dearth in the area you live in simply means there is no "major" nectar flow which translates into no significant nectar is coming into the hive for the bees. If a beekeeper wants to feed their bees at that time they can chose to do so, but for me, I do nothing as I am a hands off beekeeper and believe the bees need to make it on their own. I do not recommend following my method of keeping bees, but rather recommend that each beekeeper keep their bees the way best suits their own needs and if that includes treating for mites and feeding bees during dearth's, then do that. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. I had considered doing that originally, but as it is so expensive already, and most have the equipment to begin with, I decided to go this route instead. Quick question. How much maintenance do you have to put into that many hives? Is it a daily thing or do you for the most part just leave them alone until its time to place/puck up supersonic and the occasional split if they run out of room? Or do you just let them swarm?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Месяц назад
Almost none. As I do not treat, feed, or inspect our hives, there is no maintenance. I am a very much "hands off" beekeeper and strongly believe the bees don't need any help. I do however split them in the spring to control swarming, add supers as the hives grow, and come summer, I collect the rent and process the honey. I do not recommend others to follow my method of keeping bees, but if works great for me. Thanks for watching. God's peace Joe. Mr. Ed

Are wax moth larvae the reason wax turns papery ? Or is that just what happens over time ?
@JeffHorchoff

Bees wax will dry out if unattended, but once the bees get back on it, it becomes just like new again. The wax moth larve burrow through the comb destroying it and leaving a trail of webbing as they go, nasty critters. Thanks for watching. God's peace James. Mr. Ed

I think our bees do so well for the simple reason I do nothing for them other than give them space to expand, and split them when it's time. Other than that, I'm a "hands off" beekeeper. I'd bee happy to sell you some of our bees as we have way to many of them. The problem is the distance and heat, I would be concerned they would not make the trip back home. I would suggest waiting until December to attempt the move as they would more than likely survive and you would be able to split them in just a few months after getting them home. Not a dumb question, and in fact, it is the most asked question I get, here's the answer. Even though my name is Jeff Horchoff, the name "Mr. Ed" was given to me the day I began working at the Post Office back in '82.
