How Alain Prost tricked Ayrton to believe he - gracefully - granted the Williams seat to him, instead of being compelled to do so by Renault.
Renault demanded Senna and when Prost was comunicated about the decision, Prost went ahead of Williams and told Ayrton he wanted to retire, when Prost actually was running away from driving another nightmare season against Ayrton, in the same team.
A grateful Ayrton then started to make amends about one of the fiercest sporting rivalry of all time.
Renault wanted Ayrton Senna driving for Willians at all costs as the Senna Family had introduced the Audi brand in Brazil with great success.
So Ayrton could act as a Renault Embassador in Brazil.
Renault came to start operation in Brazil in 1997 and in 2012 the country became the second largest market for the French Company.

When Ayrton decided to leave McLaren after 1993 - after fighting his boss [Ron Dennis] -
Ayrton wanted to race for any other team.
Ayrton then decided to take a sabatical and not race in 1994 - irony of destiny.
And I [Galisteu] told him [Ayrton]: I know you, you are crazy, you won’t stand it.
Then I called Braguinha [a banker friend] asking for help and Ayrton got desperate, changed his mind and called all teams, offering to race for free.
But all team deals were closed by then and there was no place for him.
Out of nowhere, Prost called Ayrton personally and said: I heard you want to race… and FYI I want to retire.
You can race in my place.
So Prost left Williams - in the middle of his two year contract - and Senna came to occupy his place for the 1994 season.
I told this story in my book, few people know about it.

@@tylerwhite9360 I'm not buying that at all, it's like saying Wayne Rainey wasn't the best 500cc racer ever on the bikes. I understand your point but I always say, If Senna had not died that day then he would have owned that Williams car for maybe 3 or 4 titles meaning no Hill or Villeneuve titles .Senna would have finished his career at Ferrari and certainly would have been less Schumacher titles. As for Hamilton, I don't deny he is the best of his generation but it's not a sport any more , I'm not a Schumacher fan but he helped develope that Merc, F1 is not a sport anymore,Senna or Schumacher would be more dominant in that Merc at their peak than Hamilton has been

There is no GOAT, each of them were the best of their era's. Different machinery, different skilksets required. Much more multi tasking now. Different size of balls required. How can you possibly compare them? Senna was just the best of his era but I also much prefer him as a driver and as a man to the others.

I think the key takeaway here is that it's very hard to manage relationships in Formula 1, especially when your car owner doesn't adhere to the agreement that you signed. Lest we forget - Prost also recommending Senna to McLaren back in '88, so I feel that Prost gave Senna ample opportunity as a teammate before all of this mess.

Do you know why Prost recommended Senna for Mclaren? Because he had a choice of two drivers and he didn't want the other driver as a teammate. Honda stipulated the drivers using their engines in 1988 had to be Prost, Piquet, Senna and Nakajima. Nakajima was at Lotus already so Prost had the choice of recommending Piquet or Senna. Prost didn't want a double, possible triple world champion, as a teammate. This left Prost with one option. Senna

@@housesports000 After Tamburello accident in 1987? No doubt. Few people knew that Piquet lost his depth perception after his crash and, his words, he became "one second slower". Prost didn't know it at the time and he feared Piquet as a team mate. That's why he chose Senna.

Arh.. charming? I would call that a deviant quality he had. When he looked unhappy or challenged in interviews, he would turn to Ballestre. But that they were good friends, is not untrue. The media played their rivalry on track, to untruthful heights. Senna's fight was with the organisation, not Prost entirely. That was just racing

Didn't liked Senna, as I was a Prost fan plus all the bad things he did, but that day he died, I was so sad, like someone of my family died. He changed a lot also, yeah, going to Williams was not a good thing... RIP Senna, like you missed Prost, you will be missed too.

Senna was a bit contradictory when he was in McLaren and williams had a good electronics , he was in favor of driving with pure skill but he made the move to Williams anyway and the FIA banned electronics on cars to his bad luck.

i dont see any issue with what prost says here. he comes across as extremely honest about everything actually. just because he retired and contacted Senna to take his place at Williams doesnt mean Williams didnt break a promise to him. Its also understandable that he didnt want Senna as a team mate conisdering the intense rivalry they had at McLaren. he simply have not wanted to go through that again at his age. I love Senna but i have to say that Prost always came across as honest about the whole situation. never tried to sugar coat it and their reconciliation was genuine. Im sure Senna never really hated him either. its obvious Prost was his motiviation and at that level you use everything to win. He probably created a scenario in his head that Prost was his enemy. Says it all about the man that he moved quick to reconcile when the competition was over.

You're spot on. Prost always tells it like it is. Senna was obsessed with him because he knew Alain was the best and the biggest threat to the title, and like you said he created this reality where Alain was the enemy. A reality that dissolved at the last race and podium of 1993.

Adriane Galisteu (Senna's girlfriend, 1994) basically is of the opinion that they (Prost and Senna) did become friends during 1994.

@@livingbeing1113 Of course, Senna was the most competitive F1 driver of all times and when you're competitive you want to beat "the best". At the 1984 Nurburgring Race of Champions Mercedes 190E race, where F1 drivers competed and Senna was a rookie, by chance, Prost picked up Senna at the airport and took him to the Nurburgring. At the beginning, Senna, knowing almost nobody there, was next to Prost for much of the time, until qualifying came. Prost put the car on pole (and senna on P3). According to Prost, Senna simply "stopped speaking" to him, then proceeded to take out Prost at the beginning of the race. I guess Senna got the confirmation of who was the best of his generation there, and thus the man to beat.

Piquet had the same problem after Frank's accident. Patrick Head violated Piquet's contract and gave preference to Mansell. Of course Piquet got pissed and did what he did.

Respect on Prost's name. Senna vetoed Warwick in 1986 because he didn't want a competitive team-mate fighting him, so Prost returned the favour in 1993. As for Piquet... classless describes him perfectly.

Exactly. He (Senna) vetoed Warwick in 1986 in Lotus. And then he called Prost "a coward" for doing the same. Ayrton Senna had a HUGE ego problem. It was all "me", "me", "me". He could not see beyond that. This was a guy who INTENTIONALLY crashed his car on Prost's car in Japan 1990. He did that on purpose. And why wonder Prost did not him again as a teammate? Prost was no coward. Prost was rationale man. It is one of the reason (but not the only one) for which Prost is alive today (30 years after Imola) and Senna is not.

Nelson Piquet was an idiot. He even openly accused Ayrton of being gay because his marriage failed but he apologised when he raised that he went too far and that Ayrton was on the verge of pressing charges against him but piquet has made careless remarks before which doesn't exactly inspire a lot of people to like him.

Prost was right to veto Senna. It is not a matter of fearing the challenge, but of working in a healthy environment. It was clear since their days at McLaren that Prost and Senna could not work together. From a professional point of view, they had a toxic relationship. Would anyone be willing to work with a colleague with whom you have a toxic relationship? Of course not!

Absolutely correct. Those 2 years in McLaren, especially 1989, completely exhausted Prost mentally, it was impossible to work with Ayrton and his political games in a healthy environment. Senna put the entire team against Prost, and wanted him fired in 1989 when he feared he was going to lose the title. Like you said, it was extremely toxic, no way Alain wanted to experience that mess all over again.

@@John-mi2rt Mansell fell out with Berger and Piquet during his F1 career and Fittipaldi during his time in Indycar. Senna fell out with Prost and vetoed Warwick when he was driving for Lotus. De Angelis' brother hinted that Senna received a treatment of favour at Lotus, meaning that behind the smiles, he didn't have a great relationship with De Angelis either. Towards Hakkinen, he was rather cold. The only remarkable teammate he truly went along with was Berger.

If that's the case why did Peter Warr insist on explaining that when Senna was offered the number 1 position in the Lotus team for 1985 he refused, preferring equal status with De Angelis. If Lotus favoured Senna why did De Angelis receive the brand new more fuel efficient Renault engine for Imola instead of Senna. So what if Senna had number 1 status over De Angelis. De Angelis had no problem demanding number 1 status over Mansell in 1984

@@John-mi2rt Prost also getting along extremely well with teammates: John Watson, Niki Lauda, Jean Alesi, Stefan Johansson, and Damon Hill. Go read their interviews. For example, Niki only spoke great things about Alain, saying he was his best teammate and had lots of fun with him. Alesi and Johannson became close friends of Prost. Alesi is on a famous picture wearing a t-shirt of "Alain Prost : Le Professeur" under his Ferrari overalls. Nigel Mansell at the beginning was happy with Prost, but then got into his (well known) inferiority complex and paranoias when he got more mechanical failures than Prost, thinking the frenchman was favored, while the reality is far simpler -- Prost was famous for being much gentler with the equipment. Now, René Arnoux, the story is different. Both were French, both competed for the popularity of the country. And Renault favored Prost which of course Arnoux did not like at all. Finally, in 1988 the relationshiip with Senna was mostly normal, as told by Prost, Jo Ramirez, and Julian Jakobi (who managed both Prost and Senna).

I don’t know, emotions are complicated. Maybe he still wanted to race some days but others he didn’t. I can completely believe if he wanted to retire that Friday before that race. A comrade had died not long before and his ‘rival’ had retired. He knew that the Willam team was incapable (or from what I’ve heard). So I can see both sides of the coin. (Not to argue or anything, just a small insight from someone with a different view.)

Jean Todt said that Senna wanted to go to Ferrari mid season or at least when all contracts where fully signed but Jean wasn’t happy with that because he didn’t want to break contracts

Sure they can both be right. Senna was so hypercompetitive and driven that he lied to and deluded himself all the time. The whole incident with the first corner deal with Prost at Imola in 89 is an example. Senna violated the agreement with Prost, yet convinced himself that it was in fact Prost who had. Later when everyone on the team explained reality to Ayrton that it was in fact he who broke his word, Senna broke down and cried. He could not handle his own delusions being exposed. He was, in many ways, a child.

@@lnnrt0161 Steve Nichols, the lead designer of the MP4-4 had moved to Ferrari from McLaren. Senna called him, and told him he had a finalized contract to go Ferrari, but Senna wanted to make sure Steve would still be there before he signed. Steve told Senna that Ferrari was a bit dysfunctional, and he could not guarantee he would stay there.

Two completely different scenarios. Senna wasn't afraid of Warwick in a driving sense. He was afraid of Warwick's influence in a British team with British sponsors. Senna believed that the only way Lotus and he had a slim chance of winning the title was to concentrate the entire team on him. Signing Warwick might have prevented this happening as Lotus and JPS could have come under pressure from the British public. Whereas Senna was fighting for a slim chance to win the title in 1986, Prost was fighting for a guaranteed title in 1993 when he vetoed Senna for Williams.

Prost DID NOT LIKE driving the active car,. Many of the natural reactions reflexes that an elite driver has built up had to be ignored to drive the active car fast, and Prost found it very difficult. Despite the dominating season in 93, he describes it as the least enjoyable season of driving in his career. It is understandable why he wanted to retire at that point. Alain had a very good sense of car specifications, the rules, and what the results would be. He knew the next year (banning active) could be a struggle for Williams...and he was smart to get out.

English is not my mother tongue,so I could be misunderstand the point of view of this channel. But I don't think Alain Prost should talked to Senna "Renault wanted me to kick out from Williams,and they want you to go there,so I am out." Prost directly called Senna why he vetoed Senna in August 1992. That's already honest enough. That's why Senna had no problem to called often Prost after November 1993.

I respect Senna as one of the fastest drivers in F1 history, but he was a hypocrite. He blocked Derek Warwick's move to Lotus back in the mid-80s just like Prost blocked his move to Williams in 93.

It is more complicated than that...but your point is closer to right than wrong. Senna was so hypercompetitive and driven that he was self delusional. He would do ANYTHING to win, then lie to himself to justify what he had done, or in some cases, literally lie to himself about what actually happened - almost child like. A hypocrite is someone who knowingly self contradicts. I do not think Senna was a hypocrite in that sense. You have to be sane to be a hypocrite, and Senna's self delusions were somewhat CRAZY.

Watch the 1989 season and see how far Prost was away from Senna. It finished 6-4 in wins to Senna. Senna lost Canada, Phoenix and Monza through no fault of his own. More reliability in these 3 races the win score would have been 9-2. Give Senna back Suzuka which he won. 10-2 The 2 races left that Prost won were France and Britain. Senna had retired from both. Differential in France and gearbox failure in Britain. Unlikely yes, but the win score could have been 12-0 in 1989. That's now far Prost was away from Senna in 1989. Probably the lamest championship win by any driver.

prost class, has always been...the fued in mclaren was all set up by senna and the whole world blame prost for it when prost was such a clean racer and teammate for every other driver, fact. it was senna who played politics to get better engines and better treatment...and senna knew his driving would seal him this preferential treatment. prost being multiple world champion was shocked when senna was getting all the new parts first..very sneaky. the top of the cake was when senna called out prost a coward for getting that williams drive saying its like racing against prost with lead shoes...the very next year he glady took the williams drive that prost made it easy for senna.....and no one called senna a coward...prost will always be my no.1, could challenge senna to the 1990 world championship on an unreliable and fuel heavy ferrari to senna's superior mclaren

It was Prosts idea to bring Senna to McLaren, they wanted Mansel but prost thought Senna wouldn't be as competitive as Mansel imo as Mansel should have been world champion except for the tyre damage in the final race prost fluked the championship the year before from Mansel. First year Senna beat prost (88) and would have beat him in 89 except for so much mechanical failures and dnf, then proved it in 90 - 91

Get real. Take off the foil hat. The car bottomed out and over-steered before going off. The first indication of change in control attitude is a strong yaw to the inside of the corner - ie oversteer...then followed by complete understeer. That does not come from a steering failure, it comes from bouncing the floor off the tarmac. The inside line at Tamburello was very bumpy at the time.

Well, it's complicated. Their rivalry started at Hungary in 1986 and became bitter and bitter thanks to brazilian media who love to divide people and to belittle any national initiative like Fittipaldi's Copersucar. In 1988 it got worse when Senna sued Piquet for an ironic comment about Senna's sexuality. At the end, the legal matter ended with no big consequences and, years later, they respect each other, but no space for friendship. Piquet once said it would be hypocritical from his part to come at Senna's funeral because of this background and he never liked funerals, except for family and real close friends like Niki Lauda.

@@mamavswild I believe in that, too. It also happened to Prost. He had doubts about being in Senna's funeral after all they did to each other, even after they had make peace and started a friendship after 1993 season. But he went to it anyway and, fortunately, he was respected. The thing that really grind my gears is that Senna Documentary that portrayed Prost as a stereotypical villain, while Senna was The Saint. Senna family totally ignored Ayrton's flaws on the Doc and that is the interesting part of any pilot.

Steering column did not break. That is fanboy nonsense. The car OVER-steered strongly before going straight off. The moment of oversteer is the first event in loss of control. This is 100% contradictory to a steering failure.

@@shooter7aYou can see in the slow motion onboard footage that Senna steers to the left with all his might, but the wheels remain straight. How is that supposed to happen with an intact steering column?? You can also see that Senna looks down at his steering wheel three times shortly before the accident, as if he thought something was unusual. From Schumacher's slow motion onboard footage you can see that the car hits the ground hard. because a large spark sprayed out the back...this impact probably finished off the steering column, which had already been 60 percent damaged by material fatigue, and it broke 95 percent (only a tiny thread was still hanging on it at that point, which left hardly any steering options. Gerhard Berger said in May 1994 that it was completely normal for material fatigue, EVEN A BREAKAGE OF THE STEERING COLUMN, to occur at such speeds. And this steering column definitely had material fatigue, this was confirmed in the court case against Williams. It was confirmed in court that it would definitely have broken during the race...It just couldn't be proven whether this had already happened or would have happened later. So a broken steering column is not a fan conspiracy, but very likely the cause

@@markusl1321 the whole car turned / yawed left without any steering change....then went right. Have you ever even driven a race car, or are you some poser fanboy. That is called over steer. The back STEPPED out. Schumacher relayed as much himself. He said Senna oversteered, and then understeered straight off. In no universe does a lot of steering cause oversteer.

I had and still have a great antipathy towards Alain Prost - whether this feeling is right or wrong...? Ayrton Senna's legacy is magnificent. Not a day goes by that I don't think of him - he left his mark on me in my youth (since 40 years ago). I hope/wish that my loathing is unjustified and that people will remember Alain Prost as a racing driver and not as a professor again one day.

There's one dirty thing in their story and it's Senna ramming prost at Suzuka 1990, he could have killed him (or both) and would have been banned from racing in F1 forever if this move was done in 2023. However JEAN MARIE BALESTRE, yes, the guy some people think is "the villain", did NOTHING about this, thus, he FAVORED SENNA. This was a scandal, one of the lowest points in F1 history.

I can’t help thinking Prost is full of shit. He deliberately kept Senna out of Williams then when Senna went to Williams he retired then when Senna died he claimed Senna wanted him back. We will never know the full story from Senna’s side but he did call Prost a coward for keeping him out of the team.

Bro did u see the video ? Prost told Ayrton to replace him at Williams because he wanted to retire. Moreover Senna-Prost relationship was very good in 1993-94, Senna was calling Prost a lot of times during the week to discuss. In the end they were more friends than rivals or ennemies.

Senna was a child....and was the source of all the drama. It was Prost who brought Senna to McLaren. Dennis was going to hire Mansell, and Prost convinced him Senna would be a better fit. Prost was a team player always, and Senna was maladjusted and hyper-competitive to the point of lying to himself and deluding himself about his own actions.

There is skill and cunning in playing the political game but it detracts from the integrity of the sport. Nobody is entirely apolitical by Senna was firmly committed to achieving sporting excellence.

Senna did the same with Honda.and in 89 motors start showing up with "special for Ayrton" marked on the case. That is just as "political". The beef is with Balestre, not Prost. Every competitor is going to advocate for himself. Grow up. Senna was still a child, and a head case. He would lie to himself, and delude himself to justify his extreme actions (crashing himself and others out because he could not accept not winning). This is why Alain made this prescient statement - "Ayrton has a small problem. He thinks that he can't kill himself because he believes in God and things like this. I think it is very dangerous for the other drivers" Prost was somewhat similar early in his career, but he experienced things that Senna did not, till the end - DEATH. Prost lost a number of close friends, Gilles among them. Gilles even told Prost "you can not die in a and F1 car today"...and two weeks later Gilles was dead. These things deeply impacted Prost. He then teamed with Lauda, and learned much from his calculating approach. In other words, Prost was thoughtful, and calculating in his approach to risk. Prost being less willing to take risk was a direct result of his experiences. Look at the deep impact the death of Ratzenberger had on Senna the Imola weekend. He was a basket case. If Senna had experienced these things earlier in his career, he might have been a different person. As it stands, he was hypercompetitive, and driven to win at all costs, and that led him to behave as a child on many occasions, both in the car, and outside it. I mean calling Prost a coward because Prost did not want to risk lives (his and others) for a single position? That was because Prost had seen the cost, from experience (early 80s) Senna had not. A big par of being an adult, vs a child, is what you have experienced.

Michael Schumacher was already much better than Senna in 1994. He was ahead in the championship. And the first year Senna drove for Williams,he died. Remember: Senna was a guy who did not hesitate to crash someone's else car to win (Prost's car in 1990). THAT is what he was. F-1 safer is with that bastard on board.
