Hope you guys enjoyed the video! Do ug agree with my thoughts on Hollywood and film school? I've been building my own film school (i know, very ironic) on Patreon for several months now, but it's only $4, not the $50,000 you'd pay to go to NYU. I post everything that I've learned related to storytelling there, it's like an archive of my filmmaking journey so if you're interested in any of that consider checking it out! www.patreon.com/RyanNg

I have a question… I and my friend were arguing about who has the right to say so when it comes to actors and actress. can Film distributors say to a producer/ director, that they don’t want this actor or actress in the movie?

As someone who went to film school and has been freelancing in the industry for some years now, there's a lot I could say about what you're touching upon. But to put it briefly, I think that people expect far too much out of film school. They want to be filming every week, make award-winning shorts, and blow their professor's minds. Those things may happen, but I felt it was much more about understanding the landscape and language of cinema, playing around with it, understanding the fundamentals of storytelling, what it's truly rooted in, how to use it convey something honest, and meeting like minded, passionate people along the way. That, and if you go to film school right after high school as most do, it's simply about maturing, taking full responsibility of your own life, and beginning to try to live the artist's life in balanced way. In short, film school helps you build the foundation for a lifetime of filmmaking, storytelling, and exploration, as opposed to propelling you straight into the industry as its next hotshot director. Nevertheless, I very much respect how you've forged your own path, and given how talented you are, I wouldn't be surprised if we cross paths one day (especially since I'm also based in Jersey).
@RyanNgFilms

Agreed, all the things I spoke about in the video was what I learned in college the 2 years I was there. I would have never connected the dots if it weren't for the film history classes i took in film school. But I still think that film school should encourage students to create more than they are now. The only way you can develop as a storyteller, the only way that you can explore is to make films. You can study as much as you can, but all those things are useless if you're not applying them.

This is such a great video. The combination of “vlog,” storytime, and short video essay video elements is incredible. The title and thumbnail don’t represent it, but this video does such a great job of presenting the history and what it means in a really enjoyable way. as someone who dropped out of film school i agree with a lot of this but also the most important part is that film school is literally just paying to pretend you're a filmmaker for 4 years. you're pretending that you're a director, editor etc etc. you'd be better off starting to PA for productions near you and that way you'll learn way more and instead of paying you make money. and ANYONE can make a movie and submit to festivals. connects and understanding of the current industry is 1000x more important than any theory or bs a film school tries to tell you you need to know

This was really interesting and educational at the same time, I really do wonder what's coming in terms of how the film "industry" will be changing in the next few years. I think the "next Steve Spielberg" on RU-vid if I had to choose is Joel Haver. Around one or two years ago he had a very small audience but he relentlessly posted short sketches as well as long feature films he made on his own for years, now he's thriving and still making some great stuff, I recommend his movie Pretend That You Love Me it's on RU-vid and it's an absolute masterpiece, it's very touching and human, and at the same time so awkward and real. I also think you and the rest of the members of the Wholesome House are creating your own "industry" (or perhaps movement is a better word), something completely new that's never been here on the internet before, something just plain wholesome.

Another banger bro!🔥👊...one gripe: this does seem to have been aimed at a certain kind of creative person. But there are some who do really want to be "below-the-line" workers (art directors, key grips, sound designers, etc.) where you can indeed get access to working with grip equipment and such at certain schools. You can certainly do without it but depending where you go and who you are, I don't think it hurts. Also, US film schools are extremely expensive but looking at other countries were post-secondary is covered, it might not be such a bad idea. I dropped out of film school but went back to a community college for a short 2-year hands-on TV program. Now I'm working a pretty fun job as an editor. TL;DR I think it comes down to self-awareness about what you want, who you are, and why you want those things. Adjust accordingly.

Framing that Hollywood is dying is just... strange. With over 500 scripted shows being produced per year - these, in many ways, are boom times. And that's counting the downturn of subscriptions on streaming services. As someone who went to Tisch, I have some specific thoughts on film schools and what a person wants out of it. If you go to a renowned school, such as Tisch or USC (or CalArts, even), you're getting something more than just a degree. You're getting the name. And that name (along with the alumni of those schools) helps you get into the studio door. And at the end of the day, getting your foot in the door is all that matters. If you just want to learn the technical aspects of movie making, then most any film school will give you a solid foundation. From there, it's all about your hustle, your ability to network and your talent.

For me you are wrong. For me it boils down to the type of storytelling that is used on for example RU-vid. There is mostly a lack of subtext. On RU-vid creators are always telling us things, straight to the point, without a lot of room for interpretation. This, for me, doesn't even come close to storytelling that is used in movies (even the simplest example like Show don't Tell). Stating that RU-vid creators could become a new Spielberg is for me almost an insult to cinema. It almost looks like you don't really get the point of cinema. Just like you are also just telling us all these things in your webcam view. Don't get me wrong, I love your concept and your video's. You just can not compare this type of storytelling with cinema. It's something completly else. So please don't insult cinema like this.

@RyanNgFilms
@RyanNgFilms 2 года назад
I totally get where you're coming from because I used to be the same exact way. Literally the same. You're right in a lot of ways. RU-vid storytelling SUCKS, it absolutely sucks and I cringe at every Mr Beast copycat. But who's to say that RU-vidrs aren't going to improve? We've already seen RU-vidrs turn their channels into companies valued at over a quarter of a billion dollars. That's a HUGE step from even 5 years ago when it was unfathomable to spend even $1,000 on a video. Why can't that leap also happen with storytelling on RU-vid? Creators are so young, we're all in our teens or early 20's, OUR STORYTELLING WILL IMPROVE. Trust me, RU-vid videos will not always be as straight to the point as they are today. I absolutely adore cinema, but I fear for it. It makes me so sad that Hollywood is churning out these superhero movies while letting actual cinema die. It makes me sad that Netflix has to pump out shit shows to keep their business running. And it's a bummer that less and less people are going to the theater. I also fear for cinema because of how stubborn and pretentious the world of indie filmmaking and Hollywood can be. Is cinema really too good for RU-vid? Are your films really too beautiful to post on RU-vid? Filmmakers need to stop looking at RU-vid as a world for kids and capitalism. RU-vid is just a platform for people to post what they create. So why can't you create the next Florida Project, the next Minari, the next Uncut Gems and put it on RU-vid? After all, that's where all the eyes are on today. RU-vid is a lifeline, it literally democratized Hollywood, yet 99% of filmmakers are ignoring it. Filmmaking is supposed to be a machine for empathy, not to flex your Cannes film festival laurel. Scorsese, Spielberg, Spike Lee, they all create movies to share their perspective on the world, and the goal is to get that perspective in front of AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE, to change the lives of as many people as possible. Is the best way to do that really coming from a laurel or a half empty theater? The fact is that the best way to do that is not through the theater anymore. It's not through Netflix. It's on RU-vid where there are 2 billion monthly users on the platform. You make the biggest splash on RU-vid and that's why the next spielberg is coming from RU-vid. It's already happening. Look at Mystery Guitar man and Bo Burnham as an example.

@@RyanNgFilms well y'all picked on storytelling.. which does not make or break cinema necessarily.. i'd argue that content creators on youtube are actually quite good with they comms and how they narrate story... its hard work to keep the eyeballs watching amongs the sea of creators.. and those who pull it off, my hat to you! but no matter what, its all the same. i rarely catch something different. they are all following a quite specific structure.. at this point, they can be basic contractors for me hahahha.. same shit. just this one is ''creative''. mr beast point makes no sense, common. what storytelling are we talking about here? are you guys kidding me? what the fuck hahahahahah! *imagine example Barry Lyndon on small iphone screen with an ad cutting thru 😂 i am 100 percent sure youtubers are gonna keep killing it and making it better and better. they learn and evolve much like everyone else in any industry. and i am super happy and excited to see it! but at the end of the day its entertainment which also like many other things in life has storytelling part in it. that does not necesserily make it art, or cinema. its just another layer to entertain you. entertainment keeps you entertained and it keeps you in the same state of mind. art, cinema, on the other hand, changes you. i can see through this you are not that familiar with cinema and its depth... which is totally fine! i'd say drop the cinema topic, because seems to me it isn't something you are interested in doing and exploring anyway.. it is far, far beyond hollywood, storrytelling or getting eyeballs to ''see your vision''. if you do wish to explore it, - get to work! 😉 maybe you got unlucky or maybe even lucky, that you catched a cinephile and a cinematographer giving feedback on this, bu i think you're in a different ball park, kid. entertainment & art is not the same. from the distrubution perspective i can understand your point and somewhat aggree.. unfortunetely it is what it is. tho you'd see it differently if you had actually experienced an alive celluloid on vinyl :) keep up the good work, i rly like your videos! :) p.s. if u wanna emulate film look, check out filmbox, fast and easy, feels like drag n drop. we cinematographers still see its not film but it does look better hahahaha take care

I think everyone has their own path. a director I know who has made a killer documentary that PBS bought and has won several awards on the film circuit… doesn’t have a RU-vid channel (yes he went to USC). Also him going to the school opened up so many doors that he wouldn’t. Look at Ryan Coogler for example - usc opened up a network for him to help fund fruitvale station which ultimately opened up his career. It is also about opening people’s resources on what’s out there for them to learn. Many people don’t even know where to start and sometimes these premier institutions can get them started in the right direction. It is obvious you are talented. I just think you should give grace to people who have gone to film school as well as they should give you grace as well. I’m excited to see where and what you will do in the coming years

In order to create a thriving cinema ecosystem, we need to have large audiences. I feel identified about the current situation after the pandemic because I wanted to direct my first feature film. But before that, it was this platform and I messed up the opportunity until 2020. And I'm still here after all.

Attend...don't attend, film school, no film school. You are too concerned about what was and what will be. There is a saying: yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the "present".

Freaking writing a paper on George Lucas right now lol. I've wanted to go to film school for so long and I still think It can take you places If you are the best of the best, but I agree RU-vid is where its at. I think a RU-vid Cinema would be cool because right now you cant really make an hour (movie/video) and keep peoples attention. A lot of that has to do with If you pay for something your more likely to watch the entire thing. Yes shorts its hot right now but long form content will never disappear. Personally I think in the coming years a RU-vid cinema is going to come out where you pay 2-5 bucks a movie or some kind of membership and its going to take over the things like Netflix and streaming services. Imagine a place where the minimum length of your video is 1 hour and anyone can upload to it and set the price of their movie. It would be insane. It would be like Netflix but any creator can make there own movie and publish it. Maybe that's too far fetched but I think it would be cool. Anyways great video Ryan.

Hmmm This is really really interesting. I totally agree that paying means that people are more likely to watch the whole thing. Really interested to see where that goes!

Also bro you gotta look into indie films and the more radical filmmakers of the twentieth century. Ithaca just indocs people into believing Hollywood is everything. I went to a community college in NYS and I feel like I have learned a life time more than what I ever did at Ithaca. I am still in the film program here and I have gone year-for-year and can confidently say one year at this school was so much more valuable than one year at Ith.

Uhm no. Making RU-vid videos teaches you completely different storytelling than you need to grab an audiences attention in a cinema. I know there’s a lot of talk about social media vs streaming vs cinema but goodness, I cannot see the argument why “the next Steven Spielberg will be a RU-vidr”. There might be someone with Spielberg status to the RU-vid audience, but I highly doubt that traditional movie goers will have to watch someone, who made RU-vid videos instead of studying film or going the independent route, and call them Spielberg or whoever.

Look at Mystery Guitar man and Bo Burnham as an example

Just an editor???(I am sorry but not understanding that in filmmaking we all need eachother for all the diferent rolls and downgrading editors is pretty stupid in my opnion) Cinema is dying? I loved all of your last video's but just because film school wasn't for you, you shouldn't react this to others. I am myself in filmschool and till this day I never regretted a single lesson or choice. Please only Tell about your experience without telling others what to do because of your experience. I think that's a mistake. But offcourse I can understand that your own personal experience wasn't great and I totally accept that. You said 1 line in this video that made me so mad, "I guarantee that there is a young Spielberg on RU-vid." The problem with this line is that you are the young Spielberg, you're out here making videos in your bedroom, and you have the ability to create entertainment and deliver messages that million dollar studios could never replicate. Realize your impact. You have 111K subscribers. You are teaching the new generation and the old what is coming and what has happened. Your story telling capabilities are beyond imagination. I'm to be completely honest with you, some of your videos suck. I force myself to watch them, but they are getting better and better, and more often I'm not forcing myself but just enjoying the video. I love you and your movies. You're an inspiration and I'm so happy I get to go with you on your journey in life. -Random guy on the internet

You are absolutely right that the film industry is in need of a migration but absolutely wrong that the answer is RU-vid. For some reason, our generation (myself included) were brainwashed with this false sense of artistic hope that we could break the rules making our own art and all become famous. This is the Casey Neistat era. I believed he was superman, so much so that I almost turned down the opportunity to go to film school because I thought I "knew better" and "didn't need college". I just graduated this weekend and I could not be more certain that it was the right decision. If you want to make content, RU-vid is fine. But if you want to make art, if you want to truly influence culture (beyond the superficial term "influencer"), if you want to be a part of history, you have to start at the bottom because you have to learn. We suffer from the false notion that the abundance of information available is equivalent to retained knowledge. It's really the opposite. Don't let your ego get in the way of an education.

This video really resonated with me. I love making films, so I've considered going to film school. But I hate the Hollywood industry. Its filled with outdated "rules" and methods, and stupid notions that a movie isn't real unless it costs a ton of money. So I've been in a sort of weird place where I don't know what path to take. I just want to make RU-vid videos and see where that takes me, but I have people telling me I need to go to college or else I won't be successful. After watching this video I realize that maybe I am on the right track, and I just need to keep going. Thanks for helping me realize that. :)
@RyanNgFilms
@RyanNgFilms 2 года назад
You don't need to go to college to be successful, especially if what you want to be is a filmmaker/creator. If your family can afford it, it is a free 4 year vacation for you though 😂. Also you don't even have to focus on school work, just make RU-vid videos in your dorm room and pay attention to the classes that you have genuine interest in. Then you get the best of both world lol, happy parents and you're investing in the future with RU-vid. Idk that's just one way to go about it.

i’m in film school and i would say write, film, direct outside of class. do as much as you can. let the school be a backbone to your career not your career the successful alumni are those that either have mega connections or those that worked their ass off to create those connections a school isn’t just going to hand you your career. you’ve gotta put in the effort to utilize what they can provide you in the classroom and on campus going to film school has so many pros outside of filmmaking, too because you’re a college student and can do college things

I felt like I was sitting in a history class, except I actually understood and learned something, haha, it's such a cool video. I've had this thought for a while but I've realized that all sources of our global issues or anything that affects us all come down to money. NYU doesn't care about the fact that you could potentially become a huge outselling director working in Hollywood one day, what they care about is feeding students with this idea when there really isn't any concrete reality to it and then making you pay thousands of dollars for it. I find it quite sad many of us fall into that trap and end up not filling fulfilled. The people in this world who pursue untraditional paths will always go through challenges where somehow we feel alone on this wild journey to hopeful success and conquering those lifetime goals. but these challenges will make us stronger, and better in the long run, I'm trying to understand that myself. I wish you all the best, there is seriously nothing like this on youtube and I don't always have the time to watch a full video on the platform but I drop everything for your content because it's just so good and you deserve so much more credit for it but I know it's only a matter of time.
