I always like how this movie really emphasised his faults and mistakes, and didn't just put him on a pedestal. Really humanized a man who, depressed and insanely ill, poured himself and gave everything into his music.
i feel so bad for the wife, his baby, and his band. New Order is a Phoenix that rose out of the ashes of Joy Division. Much love and RESPECT always from Tx.
I visited ians grave last year in Macclesfield and his old house on barton street and a woman came out of one the houses further down in her 50s id say n she was explaining her husband helped take ian down after his tragic death...very lonely way to go..and its nearly the anniversary again...the 18th..
I'm a huge Joy Division fan, and this movie has truly touched me in a way that few have come close to or probably ever will.The first time I watched it all the way through, I cried for 15 minutes straight afterwards. I can't even think about this scene in particular, let alone watch it without breaking down. It's so very intimate and heartbreaking. Anton Corbijn did a wonderful job with this film, as did all the writers and actors. Incredible, just incredible.
It is so sudden and confusing when someone commits suicide, nobody in their right mind could ever know whatever passes through the mind of someone who kills him/herself, the internal struggle and pain must be overwhelming.
This scene gave me such goosebumps the every time I see it. It's kinda scary watching it for the first time because when you know what's about to happen. Still shocking to watch even to this day. R.I.P Ian. I hope you've finally found peace...
The fact that the whole entire ending didn’t have much dialogue other than us hearing his wife’s screams when she discovers her dead husband’s body hanging by a noose (you can see him hesitating whether or not to do it when he grabs the noose), and her telling their crying kid to wait whilst she goes inside. It’s haunting throughout, and very powerful, especially with the lack of music for the first few minutes. I felt bad for his wife, no human being should ever have to walk in on the corpses of their dead spouses. Their kid is now fully grown and has grown up never really knowing her father personally and may be a mother herself now. Just a sad story all around. I grew up with the music of Joy Division and New Order, courtesy of the fact that I have parents who were kids in the 70’s and teenagers/young adults in the 80’s. What I wouldn’t have given to have been around to see Joy Division live… I feel as though the actor who played Ian here should have gotten an Oscar nomination for playing him. The pain and agony on his face as he is contemplating whether or not to hang himself is very visceral. I am now at the age that Ian was when he died, which I find difficult to believe. Thank god we have better mental health resources than they had in the 70’s and 80’s.
they should have help ian curtis, but none of his bandmates, his wife, his family could get to him, he was a genius, a good man, he's never been violent, he's worked for disabled people, he was lonely and depressed, his epilepsy made him depressed a terrible loss
The problem wasn't that they couldn't: They wouldn't know how. Epilepsy was unknown at the time so any help he could have gotten for it (as seen) just made it worse. He wasn't violent, but he and his wife didn't have the best relationship, which wasn't help by his depression/epilepsy.
2:33...the birth of New Order. It's too bad they didn't show the time when Bernard Sumner cut his hand before a show and Gillian Gilbert(who was at the time playing with some all-girl band) had to stand in for him. It would've been great foreshadowing.
Exactly. Maybe Corbjin didn't know this or if he did, he must though it wasn't interesting for his movie, but for us fans is a detail would make a difference
I really want to find inner peace, if it is Killing myself, so be it. I'm tired to live all this failure and pain, my jaw won't ever stop hurting me anymore. I just want everything to end, I do not fit with anyone or anywhere.
