Everyone talks about Zhukov's entrance, but Krushchev and Beria's entrance is the best for me, it's so grand and without even having to explain anything apart from their names establishes the roles they will play in the story, and what's more, perfectly foreshadows the power struggle that will ensue between them in the wake of the Boss's demise, which takes the form of their apparently friendly belly-bump.

Molotov's innocent smile & hand-waving intro right after Beria's:"Yep, on the list." is sooo underrated. It depicts him as a jolly, naïve man unaware of what is about to befall on him, reminiscent of a world leader about to be assassinated(all that's missing is a rifle's telescopic sight aiming at Molotov). Interesting fact: Molotov is who the Molotov Cocktail is named after. He was a "professional revolutionary", Molotov joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP) in 1906, and soon gravitated toward the organisation's radical Bolshevik faction, which was led by Vladimir Lenin. A radical since his young age, he participated in the February Revolution and both actively planned and took part in the October Revolution. He eventually became the Minister of Foreign Affairs by playing to the tune of Stalin (which he had for decades and it payed off) and it was him who signed the controversial Molotov Ribbentrop Pact with N. Germany. The man gave his names to a lot of things, as you can see. One has to wonder if a man of such stature never aspired to more than just a Minister, but that's neither here nor there. Molotov survived the events of this movie and the anti-Stalinist thaw of Khrushchev, he remained faithful to Stalin until his death decades after the events of this film. Sometimes called "The Last Stalinist", he died in 1986 at the ripe old age of 96. One of the last of the "Old Bolsheviks" who had been with Lenin prior to 1910.

I just love how, while everyone is playing up being depressed over Stalin's impending death, Kaganovich just storms in and says "shit" with utter dread in his voice. He was one of three people who had been on the central committee since the time Lenin died in 1924, and he's probably thinking about the enormous power struggles and mass purges that occurred in the wake of Lenin's death. In all honesty the dramatic tunes for both Khrushchev and Beria are only really fitting for Beria since….yeah in real life he was a absolute monster who actually was pretty damn involved in most of the stuff we blame Stalin for when it came to the purges. Even then Stalin himself only had limited authority over the NKVD most of his power came through leading the party but Beria had actual official powers as one of the heads of the NKVD which made him one of the most dangerous men in all the USSR hell Stalin got lucky that the other heads of the NKVD were loyal enough to not side with Beria. He’s responsible for a whole lot of bad, granted Stalin did give the order but in truth it was VERY VERY vague it wasn’t “kill these specific people” for most of it in actuality most of the orders were essentially “Get rid of suspicious people” which the heads of the NKVD used as a excuse to basically go after anyone who didn’t like them or the party but when they started going into the military Stalin wasn’t go okay with it anymore so eventually and lazily told them to stop which they did…..after getting rid of most of the competent officers. Just be glad we got Khrushchev as incompetent as he was, he was leagues better then Beria.
